I am a RE/MAX realtor and Johnny was one of 3 contractors I called to do an estimate for one of my VIP clients. He was EARLY to the appointment, was very knowledgeable, detailed and clear in his advice and estimate and gave me such a level of confidence that I will be calling him to do an estimate on the floors in my home. Well done!

George did a great job on a variety of projects in our home. He communicated extremely effectively prior to arriving at the job, arrived on time, was flexible to add a couple additional projects that we hadn't discussed in advance, and was easy to work with. We would certainly hire him again.

I have used cleaning services before but this one is an excellent honest no-nonsense one. I check with neighbors who like me, found them thorough, meticulous with attention to detail. They service condos and homes in Ashford Sound, Belleair Bluffs, Belleair Beach and Tampa. I also like they have access to licensed contractors for quoting upgrades, remodeling, etc. My friends and neighbors love their work and I personally gladly recommend them. They're the real deal and proud of their work.

I had several contractors come out. Arijatos impressed me the most and gave me a “these are good people” feeling. They were very knowledgeable and explained in detail what the job would entail. The estimate was well written. The price was fair and scheduling was easy. I am more than happy with the job that was done. They took their time and seemed to care about doing a quality job. I’ve recommended them to friends and I am already in the process of hiring them again for my next project.

I had a kitchen that was being remodeled, my previous contractor started the project and never finished it. I gave him a big deposit and he just left me with half the kitchen done. I called A and G contractors and Nelson immediately called me back. I live in Boston and was leaving soon therefore the work had to be completed within a couple of days. Nelson came with his contractors gave me a great quote and immediately started the job. They encountered several problems with the installation of the previous contractor and fixed it along with completing the entire kitchen. Nelson and his crew did an excellent job, they were always on time, kept me informed of the progress and the kitchen looks beautiful. As stress as I was, they made me feel at ease by telling me that they would be able to complete the job and the right way. I sincerely thank Nelson and his wonderful crew, I would highly recommend him for any job. It feels good to finally work with real professional especially in this industry where it’s so hard to find a contractor that do quality work and are true professionals.

We had an excellent experience with Gordon Cash of GC Home Renovations. He not only gave us the lowest price, but established a date and time, provided a follow-up the day before, called 30 minutes prior to showing up (on time), and arrived and told us exactly how he was going to fix/install our gutters and install our ceiling fans. He did a great job. We will certainly use him again.

Juan was absolutely fantastic to have. He painted the entire inside of out Home, the garage door, front door, and window shutters for us. All was done with absolute professionalism. Also, we had to move his start date multiple times because of other contractors taking longer than expected and he was always open and willing to be flexible with us. Thanks again!!!

Steve is one of the most trust-worthy and kind contractors I think you can find. I always felt that he was out to help my wife and I get the final product we were looking for with our kitchen paint job, with never an ounce of pressure to make decisions outside of our timeline or our budget. He was always extremely flexible and helpful in our entire process. He was also very sweet to my wife and I and put up with our picky, Type-A nature at the end. We kept asking for little things to be fixed or adjusted and he just kept coming back and doing it saying that he was only happy if we were happy with the final product. He even installed new cabinets that we bought and wanted to add to an empty space in the kitchen. He painted the entire kitchen and all existing cabinets as well as the new cabinets. There were no unpleasant surprises either - all good things. We trusted him to also be in our house when we weren't there and he always respected that. His pricing was great as well and came with a five-year warranty. I would recommend him to anyone.

Tyler did an amazing job at installing not only a new light fixture but also at doing backsplash in the kitchen. He worked diligently, was on time, made sure to clean up, and was a pleasure to work with. We will definitely be utilizing his other skillsets for various other home projects in the future. Most importantly, he gave a military discount which is much appreciated.

After months of frustration trying to find a reliable handyman, I finally found Dariel. Wow! What a breath of fresh air. He responded immediately and completed several projects at my dad’s home within one day. And at a reasonable price. He did excellent work and kept me updated with pics and texts throughout the day. He even stayed late to get the work done. I highly recommend Dariel. He is a professional and will do a great job for you.

My House Aluminum is Great! I am a builder so I have seen a lot of screens go up in my 15 years of business. We had, My House Aluminum build our personal pool enclosure. They built a 50x46 enclosure over our pool. They use quality materials and built the screen in the time line we were quoted. These guys are organized, prompt, and reliable. I refer them to everyone who asks me for a referral. Very professional. Keep up the good work, guys! A++++++ Richard Hanahoe www.crownhomegroup.com

Hired Jose and team for the following: popcorn ceiling removal, ceiling flat finish, wall removal, wall installation w/pocket door, electrical switch moves. From the beginning, Jose was very responsive and showed up as promised. He inspected the potential job and provided estimates on the spot. He stayed true to those estimates. He started work promptly a couple of days later (b/c needed to finish another). He has a team he works with. They were all very nice and talented. Jose really listens and wants to do the best job possible. He kept assuring me the work would be great because it was my home. I have other potential projects down the road in which I will reach out to Jose first. I will also recommend him to anyone I know. My wife and I were greatly satisfied with the work Jose and team did on our house.

Brian and his team were able to remodel my home by replacing old carpet and tile with handscrapped laminate flooring. My home is now my sanctuary. Brian and his team were very professional and efficient in replacing my floors and didn't even charge me for removing the carpet! My floors look like engineered wood and they were half the price! Brian's price was very affordable and reasonable. I am looking forward to working with Renovate Tampa Bay again to remodel my kitchen!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
