The two movers that were here to move my heavy furniture were on time and did a great job of making sure everything was protected. No scratches or dings on anything. Put all my desks and beds back together and never saw them goofing off or stopping for any breaks. Not sure I agree with the "out of town" move cost which cost me more and had to pay for them to drive home but under 50 miles should be considered in town. Especially if I had to pay for them to drive back to the office.

I would highly recommend Jeff and Richard to anyone needing their services. They were a pleasure to have around and kept the atmosphere upbeat and fun. The moving experience turned out to be a joy. My furniture was carefully wrapped, nothing was damaged, and they even gave suggestions as to where to place items when I couldn't decide -- and their suggestions turned out to be perfect! No time was wasted and the move was completed in record time. I give these movers a 10 out of 10!

These guys were lifesavers! The moving company I had scheduled last minute (the morning of my move) cancelled. I called them yesterday, the day of, and Lori the booking agent was completely helpful and responsive and said she would find out from manager if they could add me in, she called me back like 30 mins later and said they could get me in! So thankful. They were a little late because they were coming from Melbourne I guess but there had been a plane crash on I-4 so understandable. They showed up with a large truck (26ft) and the movers worked late into the evening to finish my move. Very polite young men.

These guys were outstanding. They arrived in time, were friendly and very professional. My new condo is on the third floor of a three-story building... and there’s no elevator. They moved some very heavy pieces of furniture up 40 stairs! They were incredibly quick and there was no damage to my furniture - not even a scratch! Not only would I recommend EkoMovers, I would never move without them. I have moved many times over the years, and these guys are quite simply the best movers I’ve ever used!

These guys are awesome. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Went on Thumbtack and requested a quote from them, and minutes later Scott called me up and got me setup for the next day. It really was easy to get setup. To top it off, they offer a very clear and simple pricing structure. No hidden fees or anything. What was really solid was the fact that if your movers finish before the time you're booked for, you get prorated for only the time they took. The movers are punctual and very friendly. Mike Surdis and Sondisa Obie helped me out for my job, these guys are on point and didn't have any problems at all moving my furniture. I moved into my new place downtown and these guys got the job done very quickly, as we were minutes away from getting caught in the rain. They are very friendly and I'm a recent graduate so it was cool helping out fellow students. Easily the most hassle free moving experience I've had to endure, I'm recommending this service to all of my friends who are also recent grads that need movers in the area. Thanks guys.

Just used Movers and Movers to move a few items from my 1 bedroom apartment. Very nice guys, with a pickup truck. Tied everything down well, even though we were going only a few blocks. They knew the drill when we got to storage, got the dolly and made it all happen with minimal direction needed. Totally recommend them.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

OK where to begin? On Sunday 8/9/15 I had a moving company I scheduled 2 months prior cancel on me within 2 hours of their arrival time. I had a 5,500 sq foot home, a shit ton of furniture, and I had to be out monday as our closing was the next day. I mean cmon who the hell can I find on sunday to get me and my family the hell out of here. I mean monday morning we needed to close on the house! So the stress was near suicidal. I frantically googled, and after a few phone calls and crazy last minute estimates. I found Discounted Moving. I was a bit scared to tell him how much I had and if they would bail on me because it was to much to chew. These guys showed up by 11am on Sunday worked their asses off no complaints, no bitching or anything (I know my furniture is heavy.) wrapped up my stuff and packaged it appropriately. The owner himself was out here sweating with the rest. These guys had me my wife and 2 kids wrapped up before 10pm. In the end when I got the bill total I had to talk to Wes to make sure it was right. He said it was. The company who I had before was making me pay 3 times that amount. I never thought I was gonna get out of this situation once stuff hit the fan, these boys deserve whats coming to them. I won't ever be moving again, but if I need to I know exactly who to call. I will make sure any friends family or relatives need a dependable mover these are the guys hands down.

I was in need of a mover with a very short notice. These guys scheduled me in the very next day. I required a pick up at two locations and it was no problem with no extra charge. Note that the first pick was minor. They were on time and prepared to work the hours needed for my 200+ mile move. I had some abnormally heavy items and they viewed it as it was all in a days work. The price was very competitive and they should be first on your list to call. Thanks guys for such relief in a very stressful time.

Patrick and Johnny from A1 Impact Services were exactly the movers that we needed. Courteous and friendly, they quickly and efficiently packed and moved our heavy furniture and refridgerator. They took great care to wrap everything in blankets and were extremely cautious not to hit any walls or door frames. Even our little dog loved them. The service was a great value, and we would gladly hire them again. --Happy Customers, Windermere FL

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
