Tony helped me with the backsplash tiling in my kitchen yesterday since I did not want to do this alone and did not have all the tools. After having had a bad experience with another contractor before, it was a fresh breath of air to meet Tony and work with him. He is punctual, courteous, super friendly and fun to have around. His work ethics are something you don't see much around anymore: he genuinely cares about his customers and what they need and then delivers. And he is honest to tell you when he can't do something. I have hired Tony to come back next week and do some more work and will recommend him to my neighbor as well. Great guy to have do your projects and his prices are reasonable for any budget.

Daniel came to install a kitchen chandelier, 3 pendant lights and 3 fans. He was a great worker and had it done in no time at all. He is coming back to do some more work for us, I highly recommend his services.

Jorge was an absolute pleasure to work with. He responded very quickly. He had the quote done the same day that I posted the job on Thumbtack and the roof was fixed the next morning. The other larger roofing company that gave me my first quote wanted to tear up a huge part of my roof for one small leak and charge me an astronomical amount of money. It seemed like overkill to me. Jorge, who has worked with tile roofs for years, said the leak could be fixed with only opening up a very small portion of the roof and his price was a fraction of what the large roofing company wanted to charge. Also, Jorge provided a year warranty. The other company only offered a 90 day warranty.

I hired Andy to remove about 200 sq ft of tile on a concrete slab and about 160 yards of carpet. He did an excellent job, a really excellent job!! He was very professional, vacuumed the floors, and even ground some high places on the slab to make the tile installation job easier on the next sub. I was so impressed with the results that I gave him the job of carpet installation and tile. Hopefully this is the beginning of a long term business relationship

Johnathan’s team did a great job installing vinyl planks on top of the existing tile in my house. They worked hard to get the job done and paid attention to small details and communicated with me throughout the entire process. I would definitely use them again in the future for any flooring or tile work I need done!

Rob was hired to paint over some very ugly [bright] paint in my newly purchased home which had 12-foot walls and lots of trim! He knows everything about paint and "finishes" on all surfaces. He was very careful to use the correct products. He was super easy to work with, cleaned up as he worked, and made suggestions that were all terrific. His work was so superior, I even had him refinish all of my kitchen cabinets, as a second job. He was so professional and accommodating. I hope to work with him again, soon! I could not have asked for a better experience.

Darwin and his team turned my drab kitchen into the kitchen of my dreams. No issue that arose (and you know things come up when your renovating your home) was an issue they couldn't handle. He listened to my vision, and helped bring it to life. The fact I was able to use one company to handle everything from the flooring to the cabinets was a huge plus for me. I highly recommend S&T.

It's official, DJM rocks beyond expectations! Knew what we wanted and the finished product exceeded what we anticipated. All at a truly reasonable cost and completed a week ahead of schedule. Our wants and desires were expertly coordinated seamlessly into the finished design and even improving on the requirements. It's gorgeous and meets handicapped requirements without a hint that that was the primary reason for the remodel in the first place. No fooling around these guys were prompt everyday and only do one job at a time. My job came first as it should until completion, and never was there any other project interference. Attention to detail could not be surpassed and with minimal impact or mess, just super professional in every single aspect. I will never shop for tile work again because I know I'll get the best work done by DJM hands down, and there's is the only number I need.

We hired John to remove a tile floor on our house that had been improperly installed. John worked us into his schedule and came on time, ready to work. He and his helper worked tirelessly to remove old tiles and thinset in order to bring our concrete floor back to smooth. It wasn't an easy job. John has been very accommodating in working to a mutually convenient schedule as we have a house full of furniture to work around and the entire existing floor must come up. When they left, they cleaned everything up and hauled all the old tile and thinset away. Nice job!!

We hired RRC for a concrete repair job and were very amazed by their work. Michael made our old concrete pool deck look like a new, slate tile look. No one even knows that it's concrete, it looks so real. We highly recommend Michael and RRC for any concrete work. The price wasn't the cheapest, but the quality was well worth every penny.

John Knudsen installed tile in 4 rooms. He did a great job with all phases of the project. He ripped up the old carpet and found the floors were not in the best shape which required him to pour leveling cement. He did a very professional job. The tile looks outstanding. Would I consider using him again? Absolutely.

Ceramic Tile Design replaced the carpet in our master closet with tile. They removed the old carpet, disposed of it, laid the tile, and grouted the tile the following day. The work was professional and the personnel were extremely friendly and helping us learn what we needed to do to keep the tile clean.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
