Literally the worst person I’ve ever dealt with. Repeatedly lied about his service and the work he did. Had a simple tile installation job. He incorrectly cut the tiles, installed them in way that was dangerous, took zero accountability and then cashed my check when I told him not to until the job was done correctly. Now he’s not answering my calls when he told me he would come back to fix the job. DO NOT USE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

The best job at the right time!! They were in my front door just 10 minutes after we called them. They drained all the water from my bath tub, identified the problem, which was my toilet drain and fixed it. It took only 2 hours. They were profesional, knowledgable, super clean and believe it when i say "clean" is really clean, they not only cleaned the work area buy they even wiped out the hall way and everywhere they pass by and charged a fair price. I definitely recommend them and will hire them again.

Edilson and son did good job in retiling bath-area ceiling after plumber had to break into it to make repairs. They came promptly to inspect and estimate work, then came two days later to do work. They were prompt and efficient and cleaned up after themselves. I would highly recommend them. MOL. Brighton, MA

I can’t say enough amazing things about Leonel and his assistant, they were amazing!!!I originally called Leo to give me an estimate on a shiplap fireplace. This was a difficult task because it was to be done over a an existing 1937 keystone mantle, original to the home . I am sure anyone can appreciate my desire to preserve And maintain the original integrity of an 81 year old property. Leo definitely understood this and for that, I am far beyond grateful. His prices are extremely fair and there is no compromise to his professionalism and workmanship. I also entrusted Leo with my daughter’s bedroom laminate flooring, baseboards, the backsplash to my built in wet bar, and crown molding in the living room. He is communicative, knowledgeable, and completely creative. He has been a joy to work with and I would recommend him as well as use him for any future projects. He met all my Expectations and beyond.

I called a previously employed contractors named Milan and Son who did a terrible job and destroyed my carpet and bathroom. I had to kick them out of my house. Stay away from Andre and Felix and Antonio. They completely ruined the work. I almost gave up on Thumbtack but I decided to give Thumbtack another chance. So I contacted Rick Ricketts Home Remodeling Repairs. And he came over that same night and took a look at the shoddy work Milan and Son did. Rick said he can correct all the problems and he did a fantastic job. Professional and clean. And he did it for a reasonable price even though there was a lot more work to do. So definitely I would hire Rick again.

Bathroom Remodeled Made Easy. We were looking to upgrade our master bathroom. It was a kind of standard bath with the tub and shower in the same place. I wanted a bigger tub, and my wife wanted to have the shower separated from the tub. In the limited space we had, She rather have the shower even if there was no tub. After the demolition of the existing features, and when I was about to give up in the tub, Juan Carlos took the time to help us decide on the layout. He used plywood to represent the location of the walls and the tub. He also suggested us to use a sliding pocked door, which open up the space we needed to have both the tub and the shower. He did a fantastic job relocating the plumbing and putting everything together for the new shower with two jet body sprays and a handle. The level of detail he had while installing the marble tiles was impressive. He also did a very good carpentry job around the tub with trim and wainscoting. We are very happy with his work and all of the input we got from him while selecting materials and colors. I recommend him highly, and we will call him again when we are ready to remodel our kitchen.

Durany is so much more than a handyman. This guy can do EVERYTHING and he's punctual, neat and fair! I am thrilled with the fences that he built around the A/C units at our rental properties, he also re-screened the porch, and came up with a solution to fix the issue that caused us water damage from the rain run off. He's an exceptional man who does exceptional work. I will continue to use him for all of my projects, big and small. I can't recommend him enough!!! It is a pleasure to work with him!

Danillo is a skilled, smart, caring, and careful contractor. He came to work for us when our first contractor injured his back and could no longer work. Our home had been demolished. Slowly and carefully Danillo put it back together again. He did everything: the plumbing, the tile work, the painting, and the carpentry work. And he did it all while respecting the house and the people who live there. His past history of building g houses in Brazil served him and us well! His charges were very fair. In addition he is a most pleasant person. I recommend him highly!

Fernando installed our porcelain kitchen tile and did a fabulous job! We chose 6"X40" tiles for our small galley kitchen, which made it a difficult install. But Fernando was very meticulous and cut each piece perfectly. We will definitely be using him again for a future bath remodel.

These guys are awesome. If I could give them more than a 5 star I would go 100. They did my kitchen in 2 days. They came in on Saturday and finished on Monday with a working sink. They given replaced a kitchen door on the same day. Joe and Rafael make a great team and work very well together. They help you with ideas and give you suggestions on what will work in your kitchen. I got these guys from my boss who had his kitchen remodel in Coral Gables. I loved the way that it came out and I loved that they are very detailed on there work. Joe makes sure that the doors and drawers are lined up even and closed just right. They are always on time which is something that I like and they worked straight thru lunch. I would highly recommend this company.

Quality of the work exceeded my expectations, showed up on time, and left the bathroom cleaner than what it was. Professional, hard working and the price quoted was the price, no games. Job was done on time. Lastly, I will never use any other company, they are truly the best!!

We hired John and his team to come do a small bathroom and kitchen remodel for our home in Miami Shores. They were very patient with us as we went through the building and permitting process, dealing with the city, guided us through all the inspections and various changes we wanted to make last minute. We were very please with the results and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again. We actually called them back to come install our new fence not to long ago and john and his men did a great job. I would recommend them to friends and family.

We performed a major interior renovation - full kitchen, bath, floors, laundry room, front door - to our home in Miami over a 6-month time frame. The company's work was exceptional. Ariel worked closely with us throughout the outset of the project. He brought new ideas that really helped us realize our vision. His crew (in particular Neri) showed up every day, on time, and completed the job in a timely manner. They were very accommodating despite a few surprises in electrical and plumbing, working overtime to meet the project timelines. We're so happy with our home and there's not one thing we would change. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ariel and crew without hesitation for a renovation or new home build.

Jonathan and his crew just completed a project for an investment property I recently purchased (new flooring, moldings, interior doors and bathroom remodel). Jonathan is very punctual and kept me updated along the whole way. The quality of work is outstanding compare to other companies I have used in the past for my flips. I will definitely use them again for future investment properties.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
