Our child is currently receiving tutorial services for Geometry - Honors and Biology - Honors, for a period of three weeks now, via Skype video. The tutors were able to quickly identify the disconnect and place our child back on track. Our child is back to making all A's and the occasional B. The tutors brought back the fun, laughter, and joy of learning. This is so very important for future academic success. This is a wonderful and tremendous gift for parents. Honestly, we were initially quite skeptical about the innovative video instruction. However, due to our scheduling constraints, we elected to give it a try - as we had no other alternatives. It was the best decision and investment we could have ever made. The tutors are encouraging, and very kind and patient. Most importantly, they know the material, and provide updates of your child's ongoing progress and future advancements. Dr. Michelle represents her company well and is a true professional! She took her time to ask critical questions necessary to select and pair our child with the best tutor for each academic discipline. She also partnered with us in preparation for our child's educational future (high school and college). Chelsea International genuinely cares about your child and you. Mrs. R. I took my 8th grade son for geometry tutoring we met along with the tutor Costan, my son felt comfortable from the very start. Our first session was for one hour and we have had two hour sessions since that time my son has gone from failing his test to making 95%. He still has to make up a couple of test and we will see how well he has mastered the material; so far this has been a worthwhile investment. Costan is an honor student who knows how to break down problems for better understanding.

We highly recommend Andres as he is a great math tutor!! We just had him come for the first time last night for my son who is a high school sophomore and was having trouble in geometry. My son wanted someone he could relate to and Andres fit the bill perfectly! Andres was on time, has a very nice personality and was able to help with all of his questions/problems. Andres also gave my son great study and test taking tips and all kinds of extra advice. My other son is getting ready to take the SAT and we are going to use Andres for that as well! We are super picky and we highly recommend Andres!!!

Melinda was the ideal tutor for my youngest sister. She helped her improve her math and reading skills in time for the 3rd grade FSA. She prepared Abigail with effective practice and provided tools that my sister could use out of tutoring. Melinda is punctual and professional. She is also great with children, as my sister was highly responsive to her and very comfortable. I plan to use her services again.

Amikka tutoring was one of the best options I could have chosen for my SAT tutoring. My tutor prepared me in a way that most tutoring places will not offer. He really sits down with each of his students to set a plan to achieve each and everyone of their goals that goes way beyond with what one pays for in only two hours. He always checks in with his students to make sure that they are on task and will always respond to any questions or doubts outside of the tutoring session. This tutoring program is truly genuine and effective on any student.

Adair's is such of special tutor because his teaching method builds a strong, an personal relationship with the student, he has become my son ally also my strong shoulder. As a tutor has filled a different role than our average teachers (my son is in a top FL magnet school) because he is creating a unique 1/ 1 close relationship. Personal relationships are foundational to any student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. Adair's true passion for teaching is something special and very hard to find these days.

Cedrick has been a our tutor for several subjects for four years. He is very knowlegable yet able to explain the material in a way my son could understand. Whether reviewing schoolwork or learning something new, my son depends on him to teach him. We will continue to use him even now as my son starts college. Cedrick is very patient and calm and has a great sense of humor!

My daughter needed help with understanding difficult concepts she experienced with her elementary school math homework. Although this is not a grade level he normally tutors, Chris was very patient and explained things in a way that my daughter understood.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
