Cliff is an exceptional trainer. We had a pretty severe case of aggression with our dog. Our dog is a 5 year old shepherd lab mix and 100 pounds so dealing with the aggression was pretty hard so we hired Cliff. We were a little nervous in the beginning because we are very protective of our "baby." Cliff showed great professionalism and is very skilled and trained trainer. We now trust Cliff 110% with our dog and he has taught us so much!!! Our dogs behavior has improved so much and even friends and family have noticed and commented. His past behaviors included biting, aggression towards other dogs on walks, not listening to us and overall stubbornness and if he didn't want to do it he wasn't going to. We still have things to learn and more training to do but our dog has definitely had a major improvement and continues to learn from Cliff. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog Cliff is your guy!

Franco is truly amazing with his God-given talent. He takes the time to explain what makes a dog tick. Realistically, his title should not be dog trainer but people trainer. We have learned so much from him in regards to how a dog thinks and as a result we have a very well behaved dog.

I had an incredible experience and would highly recommend this Canine Coach to anyone who is looking to learn the ins and outs of training your puppy/dog, or how to help strengthen the bond between your pet and yourself. I will definitely be coming back once it is time to teach my puppy how to leash train and he's finished his last round of vaccinations, and I'm more than satisfied with the empathy I felt from my Canine Coach and his understanding of the overall relationship I wanted to develop with my pup! I have nothing but praise! Just look how happy my puppy was after his first session! =] He wen't straight for his toy and not straight for my couch!

Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

Tony is very good with dogs. My dog sometimes responds to new people with aggression but she clicked with him right off the bat. We have worked together to calm some of her anxieties and I will be returning to Atazo in the future for any further training needs.

We have had several dog trainers over the years but never have we had such a wonderful experience as we had with Leby. She is so professional, caring and gentle. Her approach to training is all done using positive reinforcement. We had some in-home training and because of our crazy schedule, decided to have Leby keep him for 3 weeks of training. She always kept in touch to let us know how Siddie was doing and sent several photographs and videos. I can't say enough about what a wonderful experience we had and what a special person Leby is. If you are looking for a trainer- look no further!

Jillian is the BEST service dog trainer out there. She keeps her dogs groomed beautifully and maintained. All of the dogs she have trained are absolutely brilliant. Also, she takes the time to put the dogs on a raw diet which is AWESOME. I recommend to anyone if you want your dog to become to BEST service dog and if you want them to be in the BEST care.

Megan was extremely helpful with my crazy puppy. I have a 7 month old Shiba Inu, they are known to be a very stubborn breed. She taught him sit and lay down at the very first visit! This girl has a gift with dogs, I definitely recommend her as your future puppy/dog trainer.

I have known Mike personally for the better part of thiry years. In fact, we worked together in the K-9 unit many years ago.Mike is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced dog trainers I have ever met. Mike recently trained a new puppy that I rescued from the Animal Shelter. I'm extremely pleased with the results needless to say. If your considering having your dog trained, you don't have to look any further than Mike. I know you will be extremely pleased! His reputation speaks for itself.

My name is Edgard Negron. I am a retired or ex-breeder of white wolf hybrids and white German Sheppard dogs here in Brooksville, Florida. I met Jossie Gems many years ago before I retired my dogs from breeding and just gave them and my family a well deserved retirement. Back then, I sold her a puppy and noticed how good a person she was and still is. Over the years, I gave her my knowledge on the care of dogs. She is a great handler of dogs and loves them as much as I do. There are many people that claim to love dogs, but I know this to be not true with many. If you are not willing to sacrifice your time and life to them. Then you could never in my mind be a good "dog person". She lives five hours away from me and is the ONLY person besides my friends and relatives near me that I would have taken care of them. She is an honest person and I would also trust her to take care of my dogs, my crazy one pound killer BIRD and my daughter's cat, small dog, rabbit and reptile and the complete property on my ranch. I would not hesitate to give her all my keys to every part of my house. The benefit of having her take care of your dogs, is the things she has learned about health and welfare AND THE NATURAL FEEDING METHODS of dogs. I am here to attest to her being a great dog whisperer and great lady. Eddie --

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
