Jaime is professional, prompt, and knowledgeable. He installed a ceiling fan and closet light fixture to existing wiring. His price was excellent. If your electrical job is simple (as in, you could possibly do it yourself but don't want to electrocute yourself, fall off the ladder, or blow a fuse) and you don't want to spend a ridiculous amount on licensed electricians (there is no reason you should pay 2-3 hours labor or $100+ for a ceiling fan install if the wiring is there) , Jaime is perfect. He guarantees his work for 90 days. He does handyman work and I am making a list of tasks I will hire him for next.

Instant on hot water heater failed due to poor installation by another contractor. Job included consultation, installation to code, upgrade of circuit breaker, addition of junction box, and replacing improper wiring. Background: this is a vacation rental unit I have in Miramar. Guests arrived to find hot water not working. Mr. Raffael took my call at 9:30pm on a Friday, and agreed to be at the unit at around 10am the next morning. He continued to stay in contact the following morning as he progressed towards the house, arrived at the agreed upon time, assessed the situation and provided an estimate of parts, labor and time to complete the job. He completed the work as agreed. Documented it in writing and with pics. In Summary: He helped me in an emergency - accepted a very late call, and quickly delivered a solution. I am 100% satisfied, and would most certainly call on him again, and recommend him to others. Thank you Mr. Raffael.

We did a complete renovation of our guest Bathroom. W&B Villa Construction were hired due to their many positive reviews on Thumbtack and the internet. Their part of the reconstruction was to install new tile backer board around the tub area, seal it and waterproof the joints, completely tile the tub area and both adjoining walls, floor to ceiling. Only the short wall with the door entrance wasn't tiled. The job included putting a large niche by the tub and tiling the difficult recessed bathroom window surround. Tiles were non rectified 12" x 24" porcelain of three different brands. You wouldn't know from the excellent joints that the tilers had to adjust constantly due to slightly different sizes among the brands and their being also slightly out of square. They showed up at 8 am every day and would extend their work day to finish a given stage of tile application so they were able to quickly continue the next day. The workers cleaned up every day, taking away any scrap and dirt from the home. They also included the water closet install when all work was done. Excellent results. Cost was $1,300.00 which included supplies, backer board, waterproofing tape and compound, thin set, and all the labor for three workmen. We supplied the tile and the grout as we had to pick the styles and color of both. Near the end of the installation I asked Gabriel, the contractor, if he would install the brushed nickel safety grab bar, toilet paper holder, towel rack and bathroom light fixture . This was no simple chore as many holes for mounting these fixtures had to be diamond drilled into the hard porcelain tile. Gabriel only charged an extra $120.00. These professionals did a superb job at what can only be called an exceptional cost Congratulations to contractor Gabriel Villaroel and his helpers Bernadetto and Bernardo. We hope we can have them on board for our master bedroom bathroom renovation this coming winter. Anthony and Florence Mondanaro

We hired Carlos to repair drywall and paint a guest bedroom and cabana bath. His work is METICULOUS! Unlike every other we have hired, Carlos responds very quickly and comes when he says he will! Very hard to find people like him in this industry! Beautiful work, immaculate clean-up, and a gentleman. We are looking forward to our next project with him! 😀

I had acquired several bids on getting my water fixtures replaced for my washer & dryer and hose bibs from other companies for as much as $250-$440. I sent out a job bid to Thumbtack and within 5 minutes I received a response back from Tomas Perez with a competitive bid and he said he would come out the next day at 5pm. Just as Tomas said, he was on time and did the entire repair including parts & labor for $85!!! On top of that, I found out he was certified in AC maintenance. He offered to look at my AC unit and gave me some recommendations I needed to make an educated decision and also to charge me only wholesale price for a brand new AC. This gentleman and his wife have been doing business for two years and are in the process of building their book of business. I would strongly recommend and refer these folks to anyone that has either cleaning or handyman repairs around their house!

My wife and I hired Richard Phillips to update our master bathroom and linen closet. Little did we know or expect our 75 yr old Florida cottage required to be striped to the studs, reinforced, floors leveled, doors hung and that's just for starters. Richard's expertise and vast experience gave us great peace of mind. His attention to detail is superb. Richard offered us design ideas and made recommendations and suggestions that enhanced the overall project. Richard took the time to shop with us as well. We have a new fondness for Home Depot. Richard is trustworthy and reliable. During the project we needed an electrician and plumber. Richard arranged that also. We had a few little home repair projects around the house that he gladly fixed for us. The project took Richard 2 weeks. His labor rates are very fair. This guy works nonstop! I would be completely remiss if I didn't mention his wonderful apprentice Jake. He is a hard worker and does a great job. My wife and I love the bathroom and look forward to scheduling our next project with Richard and apprentice Jake. Thanks again guys, you did a great job! Gloria & Ronnie

The job was to repair approx. 4 sets of bi -fold doors and two ceiling fans. Nigel and his assistant, Fatima showed up on time and were very professional. Fatima explained the process and broke down the time and labor and supplies needed to perform the work. Nigel’s level of quality and efficiency in completing the project was impeccable. They worked around my schedule and the project was seamless. Thanks again for your professionalism and attention to detail. Should I need to have additional projects completed, I will not hesitate to call you! I wholeheartedly recommend them for all of your handyman repairs to your home.

I hired Ebenezer Construction to paint my son's room and I ended up painting my entire house. I got his business's card on my mail box, and I was not sure to hire this company doing that I did not find any review online, but after the free estimate the price was great ,and I decided to try a small project asking to paint only my son's room. It had wall papers and drawings all over the wall. The business owner, Luciano is very professional because he did the job on time, great quality work and charged the same price was on the contract no hide fees. It was not a crazy deal like other companies . It was simple, fair price, and great quality services. It is hard to find someone to be clear and honest nowadays, but he is a hardworking man that provides value for the propriety. He came early with his helper and started to work. He was friendly but quiet. I did not mention to him that I was putting him on trial, that I had plan to paint the whole house. So he start to hanging plastic to my other rooms door in order to protect from the dust , so asked to remove a small furniture on the hallway. He did it with no complain or sad face. He did not know that I understand Spanish and Portuguese. He did not used unprofessional words or any unappropriated name referring to me. I was picky. After the services I walked around the room. Wow I could not believe it was my son's room. The room and all area did not have any paint on the carpet, no finger prints, no trash on my garage door or outside, no vehicle mark on my landscape, no hide fee. I gave him a check for the last payment and asked for paint my whole house. He did not have time at that week, but he come two weeks later he painted my house. It had the same quality work. The reason of this review is to better help a house owner to have a great services for fair price. I am tired of craigslist ads, irresponsible companies, and a very expensive labor just because I have a mortgage to pay.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
