FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took a lot of math classes in college as electives. In 1997, I became a substitute teacher, and in 1999 starting working as a full time middle school teacher. In the past year and a half, I tutored many students. Some of whom have become my regulars, mainly in geometry and Algebra 2. Currently, I tutored 2 fifth grader, one sixth grader, one 7th grader, one 8th grader, one geometry student, three algebra 2 students, one GED student, and an SAT student.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Math has always been my strongest subject both in high school (Miami Beach High) and college. In 1996, a friend of mine recommended that I should try to get into teaching. I remember saying to him "no way! However, he was very persistent, and, eventually, I applied as substitute teacher in 1997. Since I have taken a lot of math classes in college, I needed only Geometry to fulfill all the state's requirement to teach middle school math. In 1999, I started teaching full time. In the meantime, I also completed the teaching courses at FIU. At first, I was not sure about my decision, but I fell in love with my babies... Yes... all of them, even the ones who " try" to be bad.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
My tutees are mIddle to high school students, but a have a couple elementary students. Also, I have helped some adults prepare for the TABE, the ASVAB, the FTCE. Although I am used to teach middle school kids, I enjoyed working with adults who need to sharpen their mathematical skills.
