Mr. Raffaele Puleo did a great job for my place. He replaced my old toilet, connected my washer and dryer, installed some ceiling lights for me, and even went out of his way to patch up my jumpy laminate floor, in a timely manner. His rate is very reasonable and his work ethics are superior. He came with a ready attitude to work and he is very punctual. He is committed to solving my household problems and never complains while working in uncomfortable spaces. Mr. Puleo is very honest. He never uses gimmicks to try to make more money out of you and always looks for the fastest and most inexpensive solution for you. He understands, listens, and doesn't take advantage of my innocence about handyman and construction services. He will be my choice if I have needs with regard to my place in the future. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and family who seek handyman services.

Paul was friendly and easy to work with. He handled a small repair and took measurements for kitchen cabinets, laundry cabinets, and a roof repair. Hopefully will work with them again.

Nigel was quick to respond and offered a reasonable rate for my window installation. Within 24 hours the window was installed and the old one hauled away. He even fixed my pantry door! That's going above and beyond!

Handyman Advisor was a dream to work with. Cory contacted me immediately about the work I was looking to do. The price was very fair--I had multiple closet doors that needed to be exchanged out for new. I also wanted to add moulding to my windows and doors and David was a true craftsman. The work is excellent and I look forward to a few more home improvement projects in the months to come. He was on time, knowledgeable and worked very diligently.

Skip's work is AMAZING. He created exactly what we had envisioned, and did it with such precision, pride and quality. He knew exactly what he was doing from start to finish, was incredibly professional and was a joy to work with. On top of everything, he also happens to be a great person. I finally have my own bay window bench for our kitchen table and I love it. Thank you Skip!!!!!

Updating windows and doors is no easy process, it can be expensive and stressful. After getting quotes from almost half a dozen other companies I had pretty much tossed up the white flag and gave up thinking this was too much for me to handle financially. I was recommended Alco by a co-worker and the rest is history. Luis, Adrian and the rest of the installation crew were phenomenal. The entire process from coming out and measuring, to the installation of my 15 windows and doors was seamless. They were always on time and always kept me in the loop on the status of my order. Companies like this just don't exist anymore, people who genuinely care about the work they do and put their love into it, it really shows. They go the extra mile to make sure when they leave your home that it's to your liking. They beat all the competitors pricing by a significant margin and I can guarantee the quality of work they provide is better then those ridiculously over priced companies. There's absolutely no need to look any further if you want amazing quality work at an affordable price. Thank you so much to the whole Alco crew for putting their touch on my home I couldn't be happier.

Worked with dreamscape for my house doors and windows and was extremely happy with the quality and expert level of service. I have a 60 year old house with custom frames and Dreamscape was able to figure out precisely how to make sure there were no complications.

John was outstanding. He and his assistant repaired and replaced uneven travertine, laid wood planks (tile) in the living room, grouted it all and left it spotless. While there, he also installed an exterior bathroom door and we now have additional projects for him! He was outstanding in quality, professionalism and cost of services. I would highly recommend him!!.

So far the work has been great! Luis has helped us install new baseboards for our entire house. He also helped us demolish a structure. Lastly, he helped us smooth out plaster for the outside of the house. All the work has been done in a timely manner with great communication. I greatly recommend. We are also having him work on other projects for the future such as installing new windows.:)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
