Frank replaced my hot water heater which was 20 years old and on life support. I think it was full of more sediment than water. Frank also replaced my walk-in shower control valve. I did a remodel six years ago and saved a few bucks on a Glacier Bay (Home Depot house brand) POS that never worked right. Hint: Don't buy cheap bathroom fixtures. You'll end up paying more to have them eventually replaced. Frank also solved "The Mystery of the Guest Bath Toilet" -- a temperamental dumper that occasionally backed up and would require a plunger to finish the job...as the water in the bowl creeped ever-so-slowly up to the rim. So...that's what Frank Barbanera did for me. What is more important, however, is HOW Frank did it. Perfectly. He arrived on time. Knew what he was doing. And charged a fair price. Frank just moved to the Tampa area from New York where he was a union plumber. Worked on jobs all over Manhattan. So, you can be confident that your balky toilet or leaky faucet is in the hands of a true professional. Now, one more thing. I chose Frank because he's an independent plumber. He doesn't have bubbles on his truck or wear a red cap. He's a seasoned tradesman whose job is to satisfy the customer...not his boss and his boss's boss. Kinda like life used to be. Needing a plumber is bad enough. Shouldn't you at least hire a guy who you can trust?

Truly fantastic. Highest recommendation. Drew called shortly after posting on Thumbtack to set an appointment time for an estimate. Tyler showed up at the agreed upon time. Very courteous and professional. After assessing the items required, Tyler presented a price for the job that was reasonable. We hired them on the spot and Tyler commenced completing a new kitchen faucet installation, existing toilet rebuild (including new stop valve). From first contact to work completion Poppy's Plumbing exceeded our expectations. They have become our first choice for any and all future plumbing needs. Thank you!

I could not be happier, Dominick is honest, fair priced , extremely courteous, and by far one of the hardest working ,get it done men that I have met in a long time. He answered my call for help on a weekend, came to my house and worked until 9:00 pm in the rain to get this water heater installed . Mind you it may sound simple , not , older mobile home under a cabinet, very tight work space , rebuilt the floor underneath , because the leak had ruined it. Never a complaint from him or his associate. Had a little glitch with the breaker, but my son changed it out, now I have hot water, no leaks , and am very happy. I work in the construction field , so I will be recommending him to all our customers in the future, and I would never call another plumber again. Thank you so very much Dominick . Lorie G.

Matt has taken care of all my home maintenance needs since 2009--no job has been too small or too large and work and clean-up was done quickly. He installed a knocked down mail box to constructing a see through from living room to kitchen which involved moving two pipes, drywalling and painting. He installed a new dishwasher and installed water valves for icemaker kit. He changed out copper shut off valve to toilet that was leaking. He replaced bottom of bathroom vanity that was ruined from water damage. A video camera was installed outside. Wiring for internet was installed and even hooked up new computer and got me started on using it. Roof leak was repaired and screens were re-screened and painting was done. He installed an attic fan. He even taught me how to clean sediment out of water heater. Matt does professional work at a fair price. Dottee Temple Terrace

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
