I am the owner of a very energetic Black Labrador. I knew that I had a dog with high energy and needed professional help with training my puppy. I found Martha Bernal through a friend at work who was happy with her dog training. Martha guided my puppy through ten sessions of puppy training (basic puppy obedience). I was very pleased with her obvious love of dogs and immediate results with each lesson. Martha has a gentle, effective approach to training dogs and my dog responded very well to her training sessions. The end result for me was that my Labrador became a lot more easy to manage because he understood the commands (requests) that I made such as "Come" "Sit" "Stay" "Leave it" and he also stopped jumping up on people. I enjoyed seeing my dog learn and am very happy with the dog training that Martha provided to my dog. He remembers everything she taught him and it makes our family happy to have a well trained big dog. I would recommend her highly to anyone considering a dog trainer.

My wife and I trust Erica implicitly. She did an absolutely superb job of watching and caring for our two cats--one of which is diabetic and requires twice-per-day insulin injections--while we were away. She has a life-long heart for animals and is a certified veterinary technician. She's prompt, reliable, and trustworthy, and she has a wonderful caring way with animals of all types . . . especially cats and dogs. We'd definitely rely on her again to care for our cats and we highly recommend her PetNurse 411 service. John & BJ

It was such a pleasant experience for both me and my dog, Jack. It was his first time having his nails done and Esme’s gentle touch made it surprisingly easy. I highly recommend her!

Great pet sitter and dog walker. Rhonda has been taking care of my dog since I had him and she is really great with him and goes above and beyond just walking and house sitting. Her focus is always the well being of the animals she takes care of.

We recently had Jamie come to our house to groom our dog for the first time. Our dog is 16 years old and Jamie has honestly been the best dog groomer we have ever had. I am so thankful that we found him on Thumbtack. He was so gentle and considerate with all of our dog’s needs. You can see his genuine love and respect for dogs. Our pup is extremely difficult to work with, yet Jamie didn’t lose his patience even for a second and did a better job on him than any other groomer has. He came fully prepared and also cleaned up really well after. We highly recommend him to anyone. We will definitely continue using his services for our little guy.

This is a respectable and compassionate professional pet caretaker. Eleanor "Cookie" provides the specific care I need for my diabetic cat, Ikee. He needs insulin twice a day and Cookie did not hesitate, where other pet sitters did. That, to me, is the difference between a sitter and a professional caregiver. Your pet family is in excellent hands with her!

I like working with V.I.C. because the pet sitters are professional and genuinely care about the work they do. My dog loves her sitter (Gabby) and I love that Gabby keeps me updated about how things were each day. We use a notebook to write to one another. The huge benefit of using a service like this is the dependability of always knowing someone will be there to walk my dog. I don't need to scramble for alternatives if something comes up.

It has been a wonderful experience. Shana comes to my home and works with my dog and then I work with him. She is very calm, doesn't raise her voice and he loves her and responds to her commands. I have the idea now and and so does my puppy. I am not finished yet but Sebastian is such a good boy now. I would definitely recommend Dog Rules.

Laura was an excellent pet sitter for my 2 cats while I was out of town for a week and a half. Not only does she just stop in to feed and water your pets, but she takes the time to make them feel comfortable. I really appreciated how she plays with them and really tries to cater to each pet's individual needs. It's easy to tell that she genuinely loves what she does! She's also an outstanding photographer and will happily send text and photo updates upon request. I highly recommend Laura for all your pet sitting needs in the greater Palm Harbor / Oldsmar area!

Lane has a true understanding of dogs. I Met lane walking around downtown Dunedin when my GSD (German Shepherd dog) was about 4 months old(about a year ago). We spoke of a mutual love for the breed and how both of our grandparents were involved in K9 training (my grandfather was a k9 judge). Lane never pushed a service our a sales pitch on me he asked me some questions about my GSD. I let him know I was working with a trainer but at times my puppy seemed to rule us. He then told me he moved to the area and is training dogs here and if i ever needed help to call him (His expertise includes guard dogs, behaviors, advance training). During the past year we still were working with the original trainer who was very good as well. Something was missing though and we both felt that we taught my GSD everything we could but, he had a hurdle. You see my GSD would see other dogs and become over stimulated and hard to control and this started at about 7 months old ( He is a very intelligent and high drive GSD who's a sweetheart but stubborn.). He would jump on everybody not listen and tend to be just a brat. With dogs though he would bark aggressively and scare other people even though he just wanted to play he also seemed to be scared of them. So my trainer said let's take some time off and figure out something later. My wife and I talked about how he just needed to age and mellow but I felt this could not wait. I also mentioned how we met Lane and we should call him, but we were feeling a little discouraged and felt it may be better to wait. The next afternoon on the way to the beach I saw Lane walking two dogs and told my wife it's a sign let's just call him and try it. Lane gave us a free consultation that was over an hour. He then gave us his feedback and gave us pricing that was very competitive to any big box store but his is one on one. The difference with Lane though has been dramatic already, he truly has a passion and love for his career. After just a few weeks my GSD has improved with not only his old training but new training as well. My GSD is walking better on leash, reacting less and learning to be a companion and not pushing to be an alpha. Lanes knowledge of reading a dog has been honed since a young age and it shows. My GSD not only loves to go to training but now acts as if Lane is part of the family. My GSD is calmer and now looks for me to command him. We are not perfect by any means (its only been 4 weeks) but I truly believe with Carters k9s my GSD will be perfect and a dog that my grandfather would adore. Ask about the tree stump!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

    • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
    • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
    • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
    • What are your different walk routes?
    • When will you pick up and drop off?
    • How will we communicate?
    • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
    • What’s your cancellation policy?
    • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
    • How and how often do I pay you?
    • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.
