Lauren M. says, "My husband and I worked with Diana to prepare both the dance my husband proposed to me after (yes, it was a surprise!) and our first dance at our wedding. We gave her the music and she cut and put it all together, choreographed and then of course taught us! Our first dance was a mix of two songs which we had no idea how to do but she did it so effortlessly! I'm a dancer but don't have much experience in partner dancing, and my husband is not a dancer but has had a tiny bit of experience ballroom dancing because his parents do ballroom and his Mom will lead/throw him around every once in a while. haha Diana took time out of her weekends to teach us and we learned each dance in 2 (maybe 3?) 2-3 hour practices! She broke everything down for my husband to understand (since he's never counted music before), made sure he looked cool doing it, threw in some latin flare and lifts, while making sure it still looked professional and waaayyy better than just a little "step, touch, step, touch" first dance the bores the crap out of people or a dance way beyond our means that would have just looked like we were trying too hard. Our wedding videographers put the video up and it got over 15k views! I'm no social media influence, so thats pretty cool to me! We've had SO many compliments on our first dance and random friends of friends and family who've said they just like to watch our dance because it just makes them happy! I am sooo grateful Diana helped us with our dances because they are AMAZING memories to have! Love you Diana, Thank you!!!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
