Lenny VanGo moved my household to a new location as well as a second stop to storage. We even made a stop at recycling with a large item which was wonderfully helpful to me. The men were good steady workers, perfectly polite and courteous. They worked well as a team, were helpful and accommodating. The only thing I would do differently next time is to ask Lenny to come and estimate the job beforehand so all would know what to expect in terms of the time involved.

If you are looking for movers, hire theses guys. Thomas Sankara Moving and Storage - they deserve six stars! Fast as heck, professional, courteous, honest, punctual, and efficient. Honestly I could go on and on raving about them and the amazing job they did. We had one bedroom and one living room's worth of furniture along with 30 or so boxes, (clothes, kitchen supplies, etc). We were only moving a few miles away... I would say from the time they arrived to the time they dropped off the last item was less than an hour and 20 minutes. Needless to say, I was amazed! In fact it has taken me longer to write this review than it did for them to pack up our entire apartment. (That's an exaggeration, but honestly not by much.) Oh and the kicker - they were the most affordable by far. They charged me a flat fee which was very much appreciated so I did not have to guess what the final bill would be. Their cost was half of the LOWEST estimate from Two Men and a Truck.... Here's the bottom line. I hope I never have to move again, but if I do, calling Thomas Sankara will be the first call I will make. I will also recommend them to all of my friends that are looking for assistance with moving.

I have moved (and used moving companies) way too many times in the last 15 years and this was BY FAR the smoothest transaction (from a business side) as well as the MOST thorough and entertaining group of movers (from a labor/operational side) EVER! If you are ever lucky enough to have Kye (sp?) the Karaoke King, Hutch the "Can-You-See-The-Bruises?!?!" Diva, and Stefan the New Guy facilitate your move, you can rest assured your belongings are in THE BEST hands and you will have the BEST. MOVE. EVER., no matter the circumstances surrounding it!! From the initial contact with Jesse through Thumbtack, to the coordination with Melissa the day before, to the actual move day with the 3 most professional, yet hilarious, group of movers, this was the most stress-free transaction!! They even spontaneously worked together to secure me warehouse storage with them once it was realized the contents were not going to fit in the storage unit I had secured (and there was nothing bigger available)! Talk about a potential freak-out moment!! I will definitely be using this group again...and not just because they have my stuff ;) .... and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you give them a shot as well!! You WILL NOT be disappointed!

We recently moved to FL and bought a home that had carpet all over the main living areas and bedrooms, we are not very fond of carpet so we decided to hire a contractor to lay new tile in the entire house. Since we didn't knew anyone in the area we started the search for a contractor. We came across James Olivieri from Precision Remodeling and Design on Thumbtack; he had an excellent reputation and competitive pricing. After meeting him at the house for an estimate we felt so comfortable with him that decided to hire him (we had around 4 other estimates from contractors in the area). Let me tell you something, we are beyond satisfied with James and his team, their work ethic and professionalism. James attention to detail is second to none and he focuses on customer satisfaction. He and his team worked very hard and every day after they were done with their tasks they made sure to clean their work area. We were very happy with James work and along the way we developed a great relationship with him to the point that we also hired him to do our master bathroom remodeling and to paint the exterior of the house.

Matt called me back right away and was on the spot - giving me a fair rate and an excellent time frame. He got the job done quickly and did take care to make sure that everything in the move was done right - his gear isn't really set up for 'moving' - so you do need to be flexible and anticipate the open air trailer but this worked wonderfully for us.

I used Anthony for a move, his truck and trailer were in very good condition and clean, and he and his partner Adam did a very good job in moving my belongings from three storage units to a single larger unit across town. Everything arrived at the new facility in the same condition that it left the former one, and in comparing Anthony's hourly rate to others, it was very reasonable for the work performed.

I needed help moving a 3bdrm 2bth home into storage. They were very polite, efficient and very careful with all my furnishings, including covering all furniture and gently moving and packing the truck accordingly. I will be using them again when I move into my next home. I will definitely recommend them to anyone who needs moving services. A+

All our items were in storage and Magick Movers took great care to make sure nothing was damaged while loading on the truck. I had 3 workers and boy did they do a fantastic job. When they arrived at our home they unloaded quickly and efficiently. They even put things together as I requested. I also wanted to mention that I also had them take a refrigerator to my daughters, which they hooked up to the water line and put the handles back on. Then we took my daughters old refrigerator to my son's house who lived a few miles away from my daughter. They again hooked up everything and were exceptionally careful of walls and floors. I would recommend these folks to anyone with a large or small move. They were exceptional and even fixed a bifol door in our home that was given me trouble. They went out of their way with great customer service, and they arrived on time for the whole move. These folks were exceptional and prices were very fair. I have a Masters in business and believe me when I say these folks have the customer service thing down.

I gave them an almost impossible task. But, within an hour, they hauled up a HEAVY piece through three floors of switch back stairs. I didn't think it was possible, but they did it, and in the SAME DAY I called!!!!! Great guys!

Saying it was a lovely relocation service would be an understatement. I do not have the precise words to articulate the feeling I had after the relocation services. Everything was perfect, and I found an easy time moving to Florida. The movers involved were highly flexible, and they made everything enjoyable. I salute you.

My experience with Deimadre was absolutely incredible. He was prompt, polite, respectful, and worked non stop to get the job done. Deimadre was quick to respond via text messaging in all matters pertaining to my move including my time changing. I would highly recommend using him vs any other moving company. Deimadre was half the cost of the bigger moving companies and the service in my opinion soared above the rest!! I will definitely use him again for any and all of my moving needs in the future. Thanks again for such a wonderful experience. You were a blessing to find!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
