I can't say enough of Brent and his crew. Communication was great. I was given a heads up before any issues arose or items needed purchasing. I was given every receipt to review for reimbursement. You always hear these nightmare stories of jobs taking longer and costing a fortune because of it. Not here. You pay by the job not the time. Speaking of time if you're a morning person you will love these guys. They like to get at it bright and early. If you're not a morning person like me they will respect whatever time you set for them to start. I unlike most had the luxury of a mostly empty house but I never at one time felt the need to hide or worry about my belongings. I work a full-time job so I wasn't around most of the time. I can only describe Brent as a good ole country boy and his crew follow suit. The guys on my job with him we're young but followed every direction set forth and if there was something that they weren't sure about they didn't attempt it without direction. We all had to learn somewhere. Don't get me wrong they know their stuff but I'm many cases the not as skilled worker attempts a something they aren't familiar with and you end up with the problem. Not here. These young guys knew their stuff. I have already had friends ask me who my contractor is for when they are ready to do some renovations just from my FB posts. These guys are nice, respectful, and skilled. Now I know everyone wants to know about cost. I purchased alot of my own materials and requested the labor. The pricing was more than fair. He does free quotes so there is no harm whatever you decide and I can't stress enough if the job takes longer than expected it's not because of lack of work. It might be weather or a roted wall like in my case but whatever it is it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg because of it. I don't believe there is any job too big or too small that he cannot do. We aren't 💯 done but I'd like to share some pics so far. Full kitchen and 2 bathroom remodel.

My experience I had with Lisa Clark and her maintencd crew, Mr Larry and Corey has been outstanding. I found myself on a time restraint meeting expectations and standards for the local Housing Authority and Lisa and her crew took on a huge project where bulk trash had to be removed, extensive cleaning in the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms as well as plumbing, electrical repairs, carpet and tile replacement. Lisa and her crew stayed late, worked fast and went over and beyond my expectations. I have hired them for my future rehab and management services. I'm glad that I was able to connect with them and will refer them to my business partners, friends and family. Very Satified!!!

I just hired Vicente painting for a huge job with a very tight deadline. They were great!! They completely renovated 2 bathrooms, installed tile floors in a bedroom and both bathrooms, hung new light fixtures, and completely painted the interior of my place. They worked very hard every day and did very good quality work. I'm happy to say we completed the work on time! I highly recommend this company. Sincerely, David H.

Chris showed up on time. He got the job done, which was hooking up a bathroom vent with flex hose to an outside air source. He took pictures of the repair, before and after, which was really nice of him. Chris was very professional, and I will definitely call him in the future should the need arise. His fee was inline with the home inspectors's estimate for a repair like that.

Jason and Ryan are the nicest and most experienced people you could ever meet. They did a beautiful job on my bathroom, taking it from the sixties to luxury. They really know their craft and are "good people". After the outstanding they did on my hall bathroom, I decided to have them do my master bath, also. I couldn't be more pleased and I highly recommend them for any construction job!!!

First, let me say Shane was a pleasure to work with. His mood was always cheery and he was very quiet with no bad habits. He is also a hard worker and we worked well with each other's schedule. The project was a small bathroom "refresh" in a guest suite and the outcome was just lovely. Another thing I enjoyed about Shane was his eye for design and for detail. We went a bit longer than projected but as the reno continued the list got longer. There were a few hiccups as expected when dealing with an older home, but nothing at all unusual. This bath was a dry run for other projects coming up very soon. Shane can do anything, and with a smile. So he has won my confidence and I hope to have him around for many more projects. As soon as I add my little touches I will post some pics. For this project I got 4 bids. Shane was just about the least cost but my confidence in the interview won me over. I was still close to $2000 UNDER my budgeted amount. He helped me on where to scrimp and where to splurge. Highly recommend.

I hired Tommy to repair and paint the interior walls of my home. It was a multi-day job and his team showed up on time and ready to work every day. They were professional, courteous and respectful of me and my household goods. I didn't have to worry about someone showing up late, hungover or high (those of you who have worked with some contractors know what I'm talking about). The repair/paint job is excellent and I am very pleased. In addition, they also replaced flow valve and fill valve assemblies in my guest bathroom, installed a new double sink with faucets and hung a new door on my screened patio enclosure. (Thank you Donnie and Jeff). All of the work was done at very reasonable rates and Tommy was not satisfied until everything was perfect. I would not hesitate to recommend or hire Universal in the future. Thank you guys for a job well done.

I would definitely hire John again. He did a great job on the tile in our bathroom which included 3 small rooms and required a lot of tile cuts. He did not work the typical 8-5, but his hours worked well for us. He was very dependable and communicated with us every step of the way. Also, at the end of the job I found out that John offers other handyman skills. I will call him in the future if we ever have a need for drywall, AC, tile and more.

Jason Graham of Graham Construction is our go-to contractor and handyman. He did our bathroom remodel and it turned out beautifully! He even installed a complicated Toto wall hung toilet with washlet, which we love! We have also hired him for fix it projects around the house - such as fixing our fence, building shelves in the kids' room, assembling furniture such as a Murphy bed and painting rooms. He does great quality work and sticks to your timeframe and budget.

Don was timely, courtesy and quick. He installed a large tub and wall surround with all new plumbing which wasn't easy because of the small design of the bathroom. Everything turned out great and works perfect would recommend Don to anyone his work is top notch for a fair and honest price; for much less than big name plumbing companies out there. Thanks again Don.

Mike remodeled my bathroom in January. He installed a new toilet. He repaired the drywall, painted the ceiling and walls, put up new trim and replaced rotten wood. He also put in a new vinyl floor. Two years ago he remodeled my kitchen and I'm hiring him again to remodel my living room. He does quality work and is a nice person.

I've had an excellent experience doing business with Home Repair Services. I had interior painting done in the entire house and had my entire shower and bathroom floor re-done with new tile, as well as a replacement of backsplash in the kitchen. The work was done promptly and very nicely. Everything was clean and accurate. I would definitely use this company again. I recommend this company to other customers. Thank you!

Sammy was a pleasure to work with. He wad kind and thoughtful and went above and beyond what I was paying him for. He remodeled my entire bathroom and installed my bamboo floors, cleaned up after himself and even took my trash out for me! He did a great job on everything letting me know the entire time what he was going to do and explaining it in detail so I could understand it. Lol. He showed great attention to detail so it took a little longer than I thought to get it done but in the end I am VERY happy! I advise anyone looking for an all around handyman to let him come make you as happy as he has made me

Lindberg Construction came in and helped after another company removed a structural wall and basically wrecked my house. Mike was incredibly knowledgeable and respectful. He has done many things for us over the past few years: two bathroom remodels, a back deck, installed new lighting fixtures (including moving them). He also was able to come in after a flood and clean up, treat, and install new drywall. The quality of craftsmanship I receive from Lindberg Construction is outstanding. Can you imagine getting compliments on the attention to detail for the trim in your house? I do! Mike custom built large windowsills for my kitchen and they are beautiful! I highly recommend Lindberg Construction.

JLB has been great since day one and even better when he welcomed us to the south The thing we valued the most was and continues to be his prompt response regardless of time of day. We got some bids from a couple general contractors in the area to install our luxury vinyl flooring, but we had a hard time getting responses when we had questions. Right from the start, Josh was very quick to respond as well as update us on the process. Due to some complications outside our and Josh's control (flooring company forgot to send the flooring), the install got postponed which had potential further implications. Josh committed to working through the weekend without us asking in order to avoid any further delays and get us into our new home. He also basically took the lead in figuring out what the hangup was with the shipment and would update us daily on his communications with the flooring company until the flooring was delivered. That was extremely appreciated as we dealt with moving across the country. JLB's install job is very professional and he clearly took the time to make sure the job was done right. We are very pleased with the final product and look forward to the next job we hire him for which we've already asked him to do...guest bathroom remodel with tile.

I normally do not leave reviews but I feel obligated to let people know about ALL the amazing work that Tommy has accomplished in my home and the level of professionalism he had through out the entire process. The first time I hired Tommy (with DMR), it was to install granite counter tops in my kitchen. I called him over a weekend and he was at my home to do measurements that Monday morning at the exact time he said he would be there. He was very polite quick, knowledgeable and he answered all "200" of my questions. He emailed me an estimate that same day, called to make sure I received it and asked if I had any questions (that is something that rarely happens with sub-contractors). The next day I approved the estimate and paid the deposit. He met me at the granite supplier warehouse to choose my slab (s) and was back at my house that afternoon to do templates and pick up my sink and faucet. Unfortunately, I had not purchased the sink & faucet yet so he offered to meet me at the fixture store to help me pick them out. He gave me great tips and advice while we were there. On that Thursday he removed my old countertops, sink and faucet and installed my new beautiful granite counter tops, sink and faucet. I was so pleased with how prompt, respectful and generous Tommy was. And I was so amazed at how perfect it all turned out that I ended up hiring Tommy to do several other projects. Over the span of about two years, Tommy has done the tile in my bathroom, installed my new washer and dryer, removed and installed new bedroom doors, installed new pocket lights in my kitchen, put up new ceiling fans throughout my home, removed the back porch deck ramp & completely rebuilt it, pressure washed my house, set up the cable, TV, blu ray and surround sound system in my living room and set up my computer and home network system. Currently he is designing custom bunk beds for the girls bedroom and will be building their tree house this summer. Tommy is very smart and resourceful as you can see. He is a very hard worker and has always been honest and up front with me. I have to say- he is the all around-greatest sub-contractor I have ever hired and I'm so glad to have found him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
