George really knows what he's doing. One fast, reliable and competent hard worker! He knew how to create solutions to problems with different types of furniture assembly. He hung lights, a ceiling fan, minor drywall, hung heavy wall mounted items, even purchased the parts needed without bothering me to do it. He is talented, cleans up and handles the jobs with care and doesn't try and over charge. Thanks George! Angela & Paul Harris

Russell was nothing but professional. Had him repair some drywall, and ended up helping me with other tasks while the texture dried. Would highly recommend him in the future

I had him quote me for the roof and the drywall. There was a lot of just going to keep miscommunication about the roof and the interior but he fixed it. Pricing was very on point. They did paint and interior stain area, the stain came through and they had to repaint it. But over all the work was very good and they were quick.

I am rehabbing a home for rent. I hired Sunny Painting to paint one room, remove the popcorn ceiling and fix an uneven drywall board on the wall. Charlie and his partner were so nice, professional and HONEST, I hired them to do the entire house! They removed the wallpaper in three rooms and all the popcorn ceilings in the house. 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, family room, great room with vaulted ceiling. All closets, pantry, kitchen ceiling, baseboard trim, all doors and door frames, fireplace framework with built in bookcase. They sprayed all the A/C vents in the house white instead of me spending money to replace them with new. He also replaced all the hardware on the doors with my new hardware at no charge. Charlie consulted with me on the colors in the house that look amazing! Convinced me to not tile the kitchen floor because the tile looked good, saving me $1,200 on my renovation budget. While I had multiple projects going in the house Charlie made sure that the jobs other workers did was done properly when I was not able to be at the property. He also told me one of the people I hired didn't seem to be on the up and up. Guess what? He wasn't! I trusted them with a key to come and go. My house looks so amazing thanks to this amazing duo. I went back to the house to work the day after they finished and as silly as this seems, I missed them being there. You will not regret hiring Sunny Painting for your next job. Professional, quality work and honest people. We already have a quote for the exterior painting for the second phase.

Eric did a fantastic job for us. He is highly skilled in different areas. He installed five bifold doors for us and they came out perfectly. He also did a kitchen backsplash which looks beautiful. In addition, he secured a loose shower pipe and installed a shower extender to raise the height of the shower head. He then repaired the drywall that he had to remove to secure the pipe. He installed a new medicine cabinet and installed new weatherstripping on our front door. Eric responded promptly with a quote for the project and started to work promptly as well. He is a good communicator. He also was able to pick up all the supplies he needed for the job since we did not have a big enough vehicle to get the bifold doors in. We will use Eric again for future projects.

Tyler and Ken just finished removing a drop ceiling in my kitchen. From beginning to end, they arrived on time, put up drop sheets and cleaned up every day. They did a excellent job on the new drywall and finishing. They also installed new can lights. Their professionalism and knowledge of remodeling really showed in the finished job. I would highly recommend them for your next project!

I posted on Thumbtack to find someone to remove the wallpaper in my kitchen and also to texture and paint the walls. C & D responded immediately and showed up the very next day to give us a quote. I hired them, they were able to start the job right away and they did an EXCELLENT job. I have since hired Chad and Daniel for two other jobs (reinstalling our disposer after we got a new sink and then to tear out a wall to install support beams over our fireplace to install our new TV; they also repaired the drywall and repainted the wall). I cannot recommend C & D highly enough...they showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and did everything they said they would do--- they even fixed a couple of little things that they noticed after they got here. C & D respond immediately when I text or call them with questions and/or concerns.

MARCELLO was a life saver. We had a terrible Drywall job done by a 'professional'. When we pointed out how bad it was, the guy just disappeared. We were in a time crunch and MARCELLO SAVED THE PROJECT. He did a great job and cleaned up so nicely after the job was done. Highly recommend.

Stan has done more than my original project I set out on thumbtack. He is honest, fair and reasonably priced. He started with minor plumbing then removing my backsplash and counters. Then putting up new drywall where my backsplash was and replacing it. I will hire him next to build a 15'x14' composite deck in my backyard bar area.

Jose did a wonderful job. He responded quickly to the request, was available when I needed him, and texted confirmation the day before. I pulled a closet shelving unit out of my walk-in closet, and Jose did a wonderful job patching all of the holes. I would highly recommend Jose for any drywall repair.

We had 5 estimates given and not only did Alex beat all the other competitors prices, was able to enclose an area that was high up and a few said they couldn’t handle, AND he got his work done quickly and in half the time the others said it would take them to complete the job! He was professional, arrived on time, and did exactly what we were hoping for. Top notch job 👍🏻 I would highly recommend Alex to anyone needing drywall repaired or walls completed and we will be using him again for future work.

The firm's two workers worked tirelessly after dark until their job was complete. They were very professional, knowledgeable and courteous. They started at 2:30 PM and worked until 6:30 PM with no breaks. I also paid them to dismantle old kitchen cabinets in the garage. And they didn't hesitate to do did this and hauled them away from our garage. This is above and beyond! The concerns we have are that I had to paint over their stucco job to match the house exterior wall color. I had to make 2 trips to acquire the paint. We also had to drive to Home Depot to buy the materials. If the firm discussed their estimate and job scope with me before starting work, I would have paid them to paint.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
