Yonier Molina is one of the most honest AC contractor I have worked with. Earlier this week I had a family member recomend another contractor who would not do the work because the blower units are in the attic. Yonier had no issues with this. When he arrived the units where frozen, he took his time and waited until defrosted. In the mean time he helped look at an ice maker that I had that stopped working and got it to work. This allowed him to stay busy during the time the unit was defrosting. He checked the attic unit and it was fine, added freon to the unit and stayed until everything was working to my satisfaction. His quality of service was excellent, his personalized attention is the type of service that has been lost through the years. This is why I like to support small self employed contractors, not because of cost but more for the personalized service. I recommend Yonier and he will be the first person I will call and recommend to anyone. Yomier, thank you for you prompt, patience and professional service you provided.

It'd be hard to actually put into words how impressed I was with this service provider. While I dont remember his name now (it was the owner) I can tell you that he was quite possible the most professional person I have met in any industry. The owner was very big on making sure I knew exactly what he was doing, gave me extremely detailed background on why the A/C had stopped working and explained it all in laymens terms. He cared more about me and my family's needs than any contractor ever has. The owner took almost 2hours diagnosing and trying various fixes to attempt to get my AC back up without violating the factory warranty I had in place. Once he came over, saw the problem was likely a failed manufacturer part, he still attempted to get my house cooled down because we had a newborn in the house. He spent a lot of time with me that night, and pointed me in all the right directions to get the manufacture to honor their factory warranty. It worked, and I was back up with AC by following his directions. I cant emphasize this enough, not only is this a great company, but the owner is just a damn good guy. He is what makes small businesses great in America.

I have been dealing with contractors for over 30 years however, I must say Tony Small is the most thorough and professional. He came in assessed what needed to done, gave me a time frame, advised me upfront what issues I could run into and what his solution would be if that was to occur. I am extremely pleased with his work ethic!! He completed the job without any issues in the promised time frame. I would absolutely recommend T. Small Construction if you need an honest and professional General Contractor. THANK YOU!!!

Mike was great! At first I was skeptical because I was looking for someone to remove a hot tub and back fill it with concrete, but he shows up as a Plumbing and A/C service. But he gave me an excellent quote and seemed to know what he was talking about and had done jobs like it before, so I decided to hire him. He knocked it out in about 6 hours while I was at work. He even did a little extra work by cutting the concrete where the pool was to make it smooth and straight so I could lay brick pavers. And the icing on the cake?.....he accepts credit cards! I rarely come across self-employed contractors who take credit cards (which is my preferred method of payment), so this was huge for me. Fast, friendly and has a great work ethic. HIGHLY recommend. See photos for before and after.

Will use again! ***** 5 stars. I used another contractor off thumbtack who no showed me....I had worked Christmas night busting up tile, had an appointment set two weeks in advance and I called Mike out of desperation. My pregnant wife was at the in laws, along with my dogs, and I have a huge New Years party with family in from out of town to throw at the house and no tile or carpet in it. It took Mike and his team just two days to lay down 460 square foot of porcelain tile with grout, along with new baseboards. And it looks absolutely incredible. He heard my sob story, showed compassion, and cared about the project and gave me a very good price when he knew I was in a pickle and could have up charged me...but he didn't. I am completely embarrassed I didn't hire him to begin with on this app. Now I know for next time. Easy communication, and they pick up after themselves. Thanks again Mike! The wife and I are absolutely beside ourselves on the incredible job. The New Years party goes on!!

Craig's work and professionalism was EXEMPLARY. In the last 9 weeks of remodeling/renovations and dealing with the most unprofessional and sketchy (not to mention pricey), subcontractors on the planet, it was refreshing to deal with someone who answers the phone immediately and doesn't send me to voicemail, doesn't change the agreed price at the end of service, and most importantly, actually has a clue as to what they are doing professionally and is not practicing on my dime. They came out for one specific service and although they didn't intentionally upsell me, I was impressed with their knowledge of and excitement about their industry, that I ponied up some extra money alotted for minor projects JUST to have them fix issues that concerned me but that I didn't know were affecting my 30+ year old property. GREAT team (Craig, Mike, and two other guys (I forgot their names, eek!). I would HIGHLY recommend for bee removal, rat trapping and prevention, and insulation work. Oh yeah, they are always on time - even though I was always late (sorry guys). Thank God for reliable professionals...

Maria and her team provide a high quality work topped with great customer service. She has been servicing our several office buildings in Miami and Broward for over 5 years. We have contracted her for commercial painting, staining, wallpaper application/removal, repairs and other handy work and every time the work is completed timely and within the budget. I have also contracted Maria for projects in my home and I just love how detailed, skilled and tidy her work is every time. She is wonderfully professional, dedicated and honest. If you want your project to be done perfectly and right on budget, just call her.

Service was very outstanding. Very knowledgeable and had a clear understanding on what needed to be done. Surprisingly his quotes were almost always below the range of other contractors and yet deliver an exceptional quality work. Using him on my commercial properties worked so well I hired him for my home renovation also. Quality service!

As owner of a home remodeling business in Hernando County, I have many customers who look to me to refer to them trustworthy, professional, qualified, and affordable contractors for various types of services that I myself do not do. I have referred American Air and The Cool Guys to many of my customers for their heating and cooling needs. Every customer I have referred Louis and his crews to have all come back to me with high praise of the workers, their knowledge of the work needing to be done, the quality of the work performed, and the value they received in fair pricing. I am one that will not refer anyone to my customers that I'm not willing to have work on my own home. Louis and his crew with American Air will be doing a whole house mini system in my own home this summer and I am sure they will give me the same quality and professional services that they provide for all their customers. I highly recommend to anyone who needs a knowledge and experienced HVAC company to contact American Air and The Cool Guys. J. Kile

Ron with Polar Express was prompt Proffesional and most importantly HONEST AND VERY NOWLEDGEABLE about HVAC systems, and electrical. I would highly recommend his services. These days it's hard to find contractors or service techs who actually care about their clients and will go above and beyond to help them like Ron Bales.

I relocated to Miami from New York, and built a new home...my dream home, turned nightmare. The original GC hired an AC company that left ducts disconnected in the walls and that overcharged for units that were never delivered. Jameel from The Right Fix was extremely patient and clear with me as a woman about the pricing of materials and equipment, what needed to be fixed (showing me exactly where the issues were), and how he could complete the job at the best price. I priced out the job with two other contractors, and his price was the best and he completed the installation and correction of ductwork within a matter of days. He absolutely saved my summer in this new house.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
