John Yacoub is a fabulous find & unusual in today's environment of expensive and frequently disappointing home repair. His work ethic, attention to detail, and superb execution is rare. I hired him to mount a new 48" television to the wall in a somewhat tight space; his price was extremely reasonable and he did exactly what I wanted and did it perfectly. John, "thank you" ..."job well done". I have already hired him for another project and gave my building management his contact information, because I think he is really THAT GOOD.

Vin came over to my vacation rental house and Palm Beach Gardens and repaired a tilted fence and performed some much needed minor repairs inside the house. He did a great job and I already spoke to Vin about another project that I want to engage him for. Definitely recommend.

This was sort of exploratory--I had a small leak under the kitchen sink and some mold. It turned into a much bigger deal, and Nedsky had to cut back panels and even drywall, and then cut new panels, etc. and replace it all. A lot of work, and he was very patient and skilled. And he came back the next day to finish up a few things we had discussed, no extra charge. He seems able to do quite a variety of jobs--just the person I need to know about!

I can't recommend Rick enough. He did excellent work repairing a badly damaged fence, fixed and cleaned my gutters, and power washed the siding, all for a very fair price. He is extremely courteous and communicative, and sent pictures to keep me updated on the repair process.

Doug was prompt and professional and quoted us a fair price The drywall work Performed ended up not 100% after drying so we called and he sent the worker right back the.next morning to take care of it. We would give him a 5 star if we did not have to have them come back and it was done right the first time out but we were thrilled with his professionalism and his being easy to reach and taking care of the issue immediately . We look forward to working with him again

Very knowledgable!!! Definitely knows his stuff. I thought I had a roof problem. He told me my issue was from an upstairs bathroom. I didn't agree at first because of the location of the problem; but it turns out it was an issue in the bathroom solved by a tube of caulk. Saved me $1000 on un-necessary roof repair. Very honest and told me other things I should look for in the house.

The crew that arrived was courteous and did such a wonderful job! We hired them to patch and paint the exterior trim on the second story of our home. There is a decorative trim-piece that woodpeckers put several holes in around our home. They repaired the holes and even matched the textured finish such that I can't tell any birds were ever there! They mixed in the bird-repelling additive we bought (fingers-crossed on that) and painted with precision, leaving no over-spray or ladder marks to be found. Thank you very much! I will call the next time we need painting!

Bob was straightforward, clear, personable and skilled in his work. I needed a small but important job (repainting and repairing my daughter's bedroom walls) quickly, well and with no hassle, and that is what I got. I hired Bob based on a meeting we had when he came to look at the job. Although his quote was a bit higher than some of the others I got on Thumbtack, I decided to hire him based on that good impression. I'm glad I did this and it was a pleasure to have something done without any complications. I would recommend Bob or hire him again.

I hired Rufus & Sons (Antwan & his dad Rufus) to replace a front door. It was a lot of work as it required removing the old glass door with sidelights and making the opening larger to accommodate a larger double French door. Their initial quote on thumbtack was very low so I had Antwan come take a look at the actual job and work required. We discussed everything in detail and he came up with a more accurate and fair price. It was double what was quoted on thumbtack but more in line what it should be. This was not a simple removal of old door and putting the new one in. I would always suggest having the pro come and look at the job even if they send a quote directly from thumbtack. Antwan & Rufus were very nice and overall I am happy with the install. After the old door was removed Antwan informed me that there was more work required than he had quoted for and the price would be more. Again the complete job did also require some stucco and tile repair. However I would have hoped all of this was taken into consideration before quoting the job as the final price was more than I expected. Again the price was fair and probably what most professionals would have charged. I would hire them again but would make sure there are no extra charges from what was quoted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
