Maureen was an amazing trainer. She took our un behaved, rude dog and made him a good mannered pup. We would highly recommend her for any canine problem!!

Lori was great; she definitely helped me out of a bind. She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable leaving our dog for the first time. She stopped by the day prior so we could meet her and answer any specifics about the dogs care and routine. Would definitely recommend and use Lori's services again.

David Ochoa, in my opinion, is probably one of the best dog trainers I have had the pleasure to work with. I have some physical limitations, that he was able to address & modify to my particular needs, while teaching me a different approach to train my 73 pound black lab mix named Churchill (he also helped me with my 13 pound dog, Winston). I had had several bad falls while walking Churchill. I desperately need help to stop Churchill lunging at barking aggressive dogs. David explained what I had to do, why I needed to think like an alpha canine, and how I was to implement the corrections with Churchill. David's knowledge about dogs is incredible; he truly understands what he is doing & his love of dogs is clearly seen. Just trust him and remember you must be the top dog in the house. I highly recommend David, as does my spouse! Already, after 2 days, I have gotten compliments on how good Churchill is behaving. David said I could call him at any time if I had any further questions about handling my dogs. He knows what he is doing!!

I asked Penny to keep my pets for a day while I traveled. Like a babysitter. Stay with them and give them total love. It isn't an easy job. You are talking about 10 dogs from abusive homes or breeders. They have issues with trust, pot tying, and most are up in years but there are 2 puppies. She snuggled them and gained their trust. Cleaned up accidents and took them out. But that was only half of the crew. She had 8 cats also and most of them Savannahs that can be intimidating and demanding. She had to get the dogs out and in while making sure no cats got out. The cats are wary of strangers but Penny has a calming way about her and they warmed up even in the interview. With all of this she had a bossy parrot in the background. I recommend Penny and she has my crew calling for her anytime I can't be there with them. She handled my 19, so I know she can take care of yours.

I contacted Martha about obedience training and preparing my dog for the Canine Good citizen test. She was able to come to my home which was really helpful, and also she felt it would limit distractions during training. The initial evaluation went really well and she made me feel very comfortable asking and answering questions. She sent me documents on our training plan as well as helpful information about training in general. She is very responsive via text and email. She is a positive reinforcement only trainer so bear that in mind if you're used to yelling or punishing your animals. She does not train the way of the "alpha dog" aggressor. I recommend her for anyone looking for a gentler method of training.

My rescued dog that I have had 3 years who has her canine good citizen and agility titles, changed to a destructive dog with separation anxiety when we moved. With 1 lesson we not only have the tools to correct the anxiety issue. Also addressed some other behavior items we need refined. The method was fun and my dog enjoyed the learning, it was not fear based which others. trainers suggested.

We had Gregg come over to guide us and teach us as to what is involved in puppy training and behavior obedience. We had just brought a Boxer pup into our lives. He must have been about 16 weeks old at the time.. Well the experiece with Gregg was amazing.. He taught us more than I would have ever thought was needed. Today we have a beautiful 4 year old Boxer named Rocky who is such a pleasure to have as part of our family. I have and continue to recommend Gregg to anyone who adds a puppy to their lives as well as anyone who may have issues with their canine companion..

My experience with Christine and K9 Holistics was nothing short of amazing. First, I want to explain that at 37 years of age, Quinn is my first pup, therefore I had very little knowledge and needed someone who would not just train the pup, but train me as well. And this is exactly what Christine did. She took my level of knowledge into consideration, and designed a plan that my wife and I followed with our pup. She always followed up with detailed homework for us to maintain Quinn's training throughout the week. Quinn's behavior changed dramatically over the short 6 weeks that we spent together. He was never a bad-behaved dog, but he went from being an untrained dog, to a dog that could follow all of the basic obedience commands with ease and consistency. Months after our time together ended, and even after I moved 4 states away, Christine is still in touch with me to see how Quinn is transitioning to his new environments, and to ensure that I don't have any additional needs. I highly recommend Christine to anyone who cares a lot about their dog. You will not be disappointing and your dog will thank you!

Sue was great to work with and immediately put our minds at ease from the first phone call. We are currently vacationing in the Bradenton area for the month of January and required a dog sitter during a day trip to Miami. Sue responded to our request on Thumbtack and the rest is history. She took great care of our Miniature Schnauzer while we were away for the day. He was walked, fed and given lots of love and attention. The photos and texts with updates was reassuring and a real bonus. We would highly recommend Sue and would definitely reach out to her again if we need a dog sitter in the future.

We recently had Jamie come to our house to groom our dog for the first time. Our dog is 16 years old and Jamie has honestly been the best dog groomer we have ever had. I am so thankful that we found him on Thumbtack. He was so gentle and considerate with all of our dog’s needs. You can see his genuine love and respect for dogs. Our pup is extremely difficult to work with, yet Jamie didn’t lose his patience even for a second and did a better job on him than any other groomer has. He came fully prepared and also cleaned up really well after. We highly recommend him to anyone. We will definitely continue using his services for our little guy.

I needed to board my puppy on a short notice, due to short notice from my landlord to perform termite extraction for entire building. She saved me! I am very grateful, not only was she professional , but very gentle with my puppy. She sent me daily updates with pictures, and even extended my puppies stay when my condo was not completed on time. I most definitely recommend her services! My puppy gained a new friend! Thank you Mrs. Shar! - Ivana and Maya

It has been a wonderful experience. Shana comes to my home and works with my dog and then I work with him. She is very calm, doesn't raise her voice and he loves her and responds to her commands. I have the idea now and and so does my puppy. I am not finished yet but Sebastian is such a good boy now. I would definitely recommend Dog Rules.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
