Jacqueline Taylor did an amazing job redesigning the entire floor plan of our older house to make it an open concept design. It made it much more functional for our family and the way we use the space, and updated the decor as well. It has added value to our home. The custom cabinet built ins for the walk in closets are a favorite! We absolute love it!

Donna and Denice helped me with two projects. I wanted draperies in my bedroom but I had a specific color and design style in mind. I also wanted cornices in my great room. Donna chose fabrics that fit my style to a "T." She then brought them into my home and helped me choose the perfect fabrics. The quality of the fabrics and workmanship for both projects were superior. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again for any future projects. I also have recommended them to others and receive many complements about my window treatments.

My husband and I decided to hire Redefine Group as our close friend had a wonderful experience with them. Eslin came over to our home for a consultation and was very professional and attentive. Once the presentation was given we were able to make a few changes and add our own thought to the project. Eslin was able to take our vision and implement it to the design. She took the time to listen to our vision and made sure the space reflected our personality. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a professional Interior Designer. They're also the kindest and most personable people l have had the pleasure to work with. Most importantly very dependable, they do what they say they will and always show up on time.

I've had such a great experience with K. Jillian Designs, I highly recommend Keysha. She is so sweet and kind and her expertise and passion for home interior decorating are very evident. I am still currently working with her. From the beginning she made me feel so comfortable as she assessed my needs and style for my home. She is a great listener and I love that she never makes me feel pressured to get anything I don't need and is always making sure she captures my style in my home while being very sensitive to my budget. She has done a great job in in getting the most for my money. I have been working with her for months and I'm grateful for her patience as I was pregnant when we first began the process and as I prepared for my new baby, she worked hard to make my home more and more beautiful to share with my family. She is also very reasonably priced and I would pay more for her services than her fee. I truly love her. If you want your home interior decoration in the hands of a passionate, kind, budget-friendly, knowledgable professional, then you will have that experience with K. Jillian Designs. It feels great to have found my personal home interior decorator.

I was looking for an interior designer, not a decorator. Thanks to Thumbtack, I found Laura. Laura re-designed all the lighting in the main areas of the house: Living Room, Dining, Kitchen, Family Room and Hallways. My house turned from dark and wretched to light and beautiful! Then we went for the Kitchen. She took out the fluorescent lights and put in a molded ceiling with indirect lighting and put LED lights above the counters and above the island. Then she did the back splash with glass tile. What a difference it made! I feel very lucky to have found someone with her talent and pleasing personality. I highly recommend her services. She is great!

All of the craftsmen Jentry hired (like my cabinet maker and the people installing my ceramic tile) are doing top-notch work. I love Jentry's design taste. And her professionalism and integrity have made working with her a pleasure. I would recommend Jentry to anyone looking for a "full-service" designer who can handle their large or small job. thanks

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Gargi is AMAZING! My husband and I contacted Modern Designs Homes to help us figure out furniture placement for a very tricky downstairs layout--and when I say tricky, I mean it had stumped a few other designers we previously worked with. The other challenge was that we already had existing furniture (and a piano!) and some decor, and we just wanted to bring in some elements to finish and tie all the rooms together and perhaps bring in more of my husband's aesthetic. Gargi was definitely up for the challenge. Within one brainstorming session, she was able to come up with a layout that worked beautifully and enhanced the flow from space to space--I finally feel like we have a living room, Its not only functional but beautiful as well! I highly recommend Modern Design homes interior design company for your design needs! Thank you.

Stephanie and Beyond the Door Interior Redesign did an amazing job on our home by redesigning a bedroom, family room and dining room. Stephanie is easy to work with, understood completely what I was looking for while still suggesting pieces that I never would have considered on my own but absolutely loved, after she put everything together! Her rates were reasonable, she found wonderful prices and the final product was even better than I had imagined, I would highly recommend Stephanie to my family and friends!

Christine has helped me with a variety of projects within my home, the most recent being to design a "game room". I am always amazed at her ability to create and design rooms that are functional, beautiful, and exactly what I'm looking for. I am not able to visualize how something will come together on my own, and that's why I'm so thankful for Christine. She brings her vision, and over and over again I am amazed at the results when it's complete. Her dedication to creating a space that fits my personal taste is always thoughtful, well planned, and right on the mark! If you're looking for someone to help you create the perfect space, she's the one to use!

We have hired Bobbie Brantley's services on several residences and have been very pleased with each project. We first went to her to re-do our dining room. She turned a small, uninteresting room into a showroom. Her creativity and eye for detail resulted in a dining room we never envisioned; and at a cost that was acceptable. Next, we asked her to update a condo we moved to on the beach. She successfully incorporated our existing furniture with a few newer pieces. The result was just the right amount of coastal infusion with our traditional furniture. In addition, she made some changes in the existing floor plan, which gave us much more room. We received many compliments on our condo. When we sold it, the changes Bobbie made to our floor plan and to our decor, along with her expert staging, resulted in a higher sales price than we had anticipated. We purchased an Arts and Crafts home in St. Petersburg. The house was in very poor condition. Bobbie helped us renovate it. More importantly, she changed and re-drafted the floor plan to fit our lifestyle. What we most appreciated was her knowledge of the period of the house. She made the changes we required, while at the same time, maintaining the integrity of the period of the house. Bobbie has an incredible eye for color, which was really handy in staying true to the period, yet providing our family with a home that fit our personalities. We highly recommend Bobbie Brantley for any interior project you might undertake. She has the knowledge and creativity required to successfully complete any project. She took the time to get to know our likes and dislikes; and she listened to what we said. She finished each phase at the time she stated and at the budget she gave us. Her knowledge of furniture, lighting, color, etc. have provided our family with several lovely homes. Should the need arise, we will most certainly hire her to work with us again.

Sept. 10th, 2015 I would like to recommend Joan Greenfield of Moderne Interior Design. We chose Joan because of her expertise in modern interior design, her degree and license, her 29 years of experience, her varied body of work, AND, her enthusiasm. My Husband and I found her to be creatively talented, service-oriented, with a friendly, outgoing attitude that she easily maintained, while remaining solution focused. She has great communication, listening and organizational skills, and always kept us informed. She displayed a high degree of integrity, efficiency, and responsibility, giving generously of her time. She was always willing to do more than what was required. She is dedicated to her profession and brought interesting ideas to our home. She made our design process easy, as we weren't able to be in town much. My Husband and I loved working with Joan and we want to give our wholehearted endorsement! Amy and Victor Mitchell

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
