He was right on time and even came a little early. He did a great job putting the cabinet together and looks great in my kitchen. He also hung a bamboo blind for me. If you want to have the work done right for the right price, hire George. You won't be disappointed.

I hired Fickey Flooring to do the bamboo flooring in our master bedroom and the adjoining dressing/sink area. I got Dan's name from a friend of mine that I bowl with who swore by his work. Before the job started Mr. Fickey (Dan) aided me with product selection by explaining to me to me the advantages and disadvantages of each type of flooring and underlayment. He also explained the need for acclimating natural flooring products to the home in which they are going to be installed to prevent problems from occurring after the installation is completed. Dan prepped the job completely. He carefully removed the baseboards and numbered them so I could refinish and reuse them, which is no easy task in a 32 year old house. He removed the old carpeting and underlayment and removed any nails and completely vacuumed all of the debris that was left behind. Once Dan began installing the flooring I was amazed at how quickly the job progressed. There were a number of tricky corners as the room transitioned from the sleeping to the dressing area and also the transition to the walk-in closet and Dan never batted an eye. Once the flooring was installed Dan finished it off by making custom pieces for the transitions between the dressing area and the tile in the master bathroom and for the transition between the bedroom and the hallway. He also reinstalled the baseboards I had completed refinishing. I am still amazed at the quality of the completed job. It is the only job I have ever had done during the remodeling of my home that I cannot find any fault with. I still get a warm, fuzzy feeling every night when I go to the bedroom and see how beautiful the entire project came together. I have one more bedroom to remodel at some point in the future and plan to hire Dan Fickey again when the time comes.

For the past five years Mark has completed several of my townhouse renovations from installing an a beautiful all tile shower, wood laminate in hallway and stairs, bamboo flooring in master bedroom and closets, and most recently wood looking tile living room and hallway. For every project, he has given an estimate which includes his labor and cleanup. In addition, Mark has also met me at Home Depot and/or Floor and Decor to give recommendations and assistance with transportation of heavy materials. Most importantly, Mark is very reliable and extremely efficient! For example, from one day to the next my entire 220 square feet living room floor and hallway was broken down and prepped for the next day installation! So, basically his experience and tidy, beautiful and cost-effective fair pricing keeps me his steady customer. I highly recommend Mark for any of your flooring needs - whether it be laminate, bamboo, tile - I've had them all done and am extremely satisfied by this quality service. I am confident that any future customer will be equally as satisfied!

I came in town at the last minute and realized I needed help finishing up the “honey do” list for our new house. Mac called first and adjusted his schedule to work in my time frame. They showed up right on time and got started right away. I had planned for this to be a quick service trip, but I kept throwing projects at him and he kept getting them done for me. They moved furniture, hung art, installed 2 shower rods, helped hang the curtains, put somethings together for me, figured out how to make the ice maker work in the frig AND hooked up my printer for my computer!! I highly recommend Handy Mac and will be definitely calling him again:)

Steve painted the exterior of my home and I couldn't be happier with the result. Steve's quote was comparable to others I received but the great reviews he has made choosing him easy. Steve was professional, courteous, prompt, detailed and overall a real pleasure to work with. While painting he also took care of a couple other little things for me (applying wood stain to my shed stairs and fixing a broken door handle) for no additional charge! And he even provided me great recommendations on restaurants and activities in Boston where I was headed to visit. My house looks amazing and I will definitely be using Steve for other projects since his skills are vast.

I feel very fortunate that I found George to correct the problem I found when I moved into my new home. There was a leak in a drain pipe inside the wall , which caused mold damage and extensive damage to the bathroom vanities and adjoining bedroom. George worked with me to recover almost all of the cost of the damage from my insurance company and made the repairs in a remarkable short time. He was very attentive to detail and took care of every part of the construction from mold removal to replacement of the vanities, plumbing, painting and tile replacement. He was a life saver.

William Daniel and his team did an outstanding job installing wood plank tile flooring throughout my entire house. He also replaced the sheet rock in the bathrooms and built custom niches in the showers and tiled the walls and floors. His work was impeccable. He made sure to keep the work areas very clean at all times and double checked all his work. His team was very professional and courteous and I would hire them in the future for all my tile and flooring needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
