I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS GENTLEMAN...I needed a new custom gate installed matching the existing porch design. Scott Magura responded immediately, sent me pictures of his completed projects, came out the next day to measure, sent me pictures of possible styles, offered suggestions and was so patient with my requests. Scott is very talented in so many ways. Even though he will not be installing a new gate,(because I have to order it custom designed from the factory) I would definitely hire him for anything else I need in the future, and would recommend him to all my family and friends.

Jeff is really good at what he does! He replaced some outside rotten wood in the evesdrop area, painted it (looked really nice) and tiled a kitched backdrop (looks fab!) and repaired an section of the privacy fence. He was at the gate waiting when I arrived and is really easy to work with. Have a few other things he promised to come back and help out with...looking forward.

Ryan was able to tackle a number of jobs that I had from installing a new gate to regrouting a tile counter, tiling a closet, fixed an exterior wall. He always showed up, was trustworthy, clean cut and I appreciated that he bought all the materials for the jobs. I would hire him again.

Nick has been over twice so far. He has done amazing work in a variety of areas: mounting TVs, installing outlets behind TVs so there isn’t wiring on the walls, bathroom fixtures, and fixing an old broken fence. Nick does great work, he works fast, and he has an amazing attitude. I highly recommend him!

My friend Mary has been using Vince for years and referred Vince to use several month ago to replace the back and side half of our fence. He not only allowed us to get the material delivered, he worked around our schedule to get the job done. He explained the cost to us clearly! Out backyard is beautiful again! He and his guys stopped everything when my dog got our and brought her back safely even though it took about an hour out there day!! Vince and his team are highly recommended for fence installation and repair.

Dan did a great job on my fence gate. I had it done about a year ago and obviously it wasn't done right. He did what was necessary to make it last a while. New fence post new slats, hinges, and handle. He also fixed some slats on the fence itself. He was very personable and the price was right. Good job Dan

I have now used American handyman services on three of my investment properties. Jason, the owner, has always gone above and beyond and made me extremely satisfied! They go the extra mile and have completed all three of the jobs done for me on time and above expectations! Perfect example: I recently hired Jason to pressure wash a driveway and back patio for me. I sent him a few measurements and he gave me the price and we signed an agreement . Skip ahead a day and the jobs finished ahead of schedule. I also didn’t take into consideration the front porch/walkway when I sent him measurements. Our contract clearly states the driveway and back patio. They took care of the front porch and walkway and nothing was said. After they left I was thinking about it and realized I had just gotten my front walkway as well as front patio pressure washed as well but for free. I thought why did they not say something. I gave Jason a call, ultimately he told me it was no problem and they are very grateful for the work and don’t mind doing that extra little bit, I insisted I pay the difference I should owe and he won’t take! I definitely will slip it into the next check for the next job! Definitely a long review but I highly recommend these guys to anyone! It is tough to find good honest quality and affordable people these days. This company is exactly that! Keep it up guys!!!

Very pleased with the work Wade has done around the house. Very honest and hardworking! He’s replaced much of the trim in my downstairs and has also recaulked all of the windows and I couldn’t be happier. Scheduled to have him back again next week to pressure wash my driveway. Thanks for everything Wade! Phil Barrone

He did the patio including moving all the furniture planters and any thing else that was in the way. And to add to my surprise he put everything back as he found it. He also pressure washed the driveway and front side walk.

Jeff painted the exterior of my home. He patched cracks and paid attention to the fine details. He took care of the purchasing and painting. He was very professional and all my neighbors commented on what a great job he did. I hired him back to put a new gate on my fence and he built the fence and repaired areas as needed. He is my new "to do list" handyman...his number is on my speed dial.

Frank did an excellent job of mold removal on my roof as well pressure washing of my home and driveway. I would highly recommend him as he was very efficient and left the property in excellent condition. On another prior occasion he installed three ceiling fans on the lanai, one hanging Coachlamp on the front porch, light fixtures over double sinks in two bathrooms and did a very professional neat and tidy job on all installations. You won't be disappointed in his services.

Joel was great. He installed new fencing and gate at our new house. He actually finished earlier than promised and completely cleaned up the entire area, which I'm not used to with other workers! He was professional, did a great job and I would definitely hire him again. I recommend him to anyone looking for a hard working, professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
