Professor Lunsford was my Statistics teacher at the University of South Florida. I also went to him for private tutoring. He explained concepts to me in way that was easy for me to understand. Dr. Lunsford is very knowledgeable and an outstanding educator. He made learning a lot of fun and showed genuine concern for his students. He always was passionate about his career and it showed. I wish all professors and tutors were more like him! I graduated in 2011 and live in Washington State. Even on the opposite side of the country he has been a wonderful mentor!

I needed a tutor to help my grandson prepare for a Geometry exam. Miles Smart Tutoring did the job by responding quickly and assigning the right tutor for him. My grandson found his experience to be very positive. I would use him again should the need arise.

My son, Bobby, absolutely hated math, and didn't even want to go to school! I didn't know what to do! Then, a friend recommended Jennifer at Seeds of Knowledge Tutoring. Bobby and I both loved her! We went to her house for 2 hour sessions. (Jennifer even has a little couch where parents can wait and read, or whatever, while she tutors the children!) Within a couple of sessions, Bobby was LAUGHING!! Now he LOVES math! His teacher says that he is doing MUCH better! We were THRILLED with the help that our son received!

I got Arbor Tutors to help me with test prep for grad school. Oh man! I am SUPER happy I did that. The tutoring manager walked me through the whole process and set me up with TWO tutors. They also said I could change tutors at any time, but I didn't need to. I was accepted into all of my top choices (Columbia, Penn, Cornell and Duke). I used the application services also (they reviewed my essays).

Whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Carolyn Hilt as an excellent teacher/tutor. Very patient. kind, and understanding as she imparts not only knowledge but also builds self-confidence of each and every student. My granddaughter attended and graduated from Son Haven, the Hilt's homeschooling school where each child is taught as an individual with individual learning needs. Wonderful person as well as great teacher!

I hired Dahee to help my son with Math and testing. He struggled for a complete year with tutoring from another well-known company and hated every minute of it. Dahee not only assisted him in understanding processes and improving his test taking but also made learning fun for him. Now his overall Math score is higher than his scores in most of his other subjects. He has improved in taking tests and enjoys working ahead. I highly recommend Dahee to anyone seeking a Math tutor!

Carla was an excellent and highly qualified SAT and ACT prep tutor of mine. She help bring my original SAT score up by atleast 300 points and my ACT score from a 22 to a 26. She truly cares about helping others, you can tell she wants you to exceed and is not profit driven. She even helped me with things outside of our paid sessions, offering her own free time to help me draft my college entry essays. I was referred to Carla from a friend who also had outstanding score improvements from her SAT and ACT testing. I couldn't imagine a better or more qualified tutor than her and I'd hire her again in a heartbeat. She is, in many ways, accountable for helping me earn my college acceptances!

A year ago we made the decision to hire a tutor for our daughter, who was heading into the 3rd grade and was still reading at a Kindergarten level. Even though she was getting one-on-one attention and was on an IEP at her school, we did not seem to be making any improvements in reading. When Meg started working with us, she went back to basics, with letter sounds and combinations and essentially started over with the reading process. Our daughter has worked with her consistently twice a week and the difference in this one year has been amazing. She is now reading Level 2 reading books, sounding out words and beginning to write sentences with the words she has learned. Mid-way through tutoring we moved to online tutoring, which I was a little leery of, but our daughter loves it. Adding the computer into the mix seems to contribute an element of fun to the whole experience. We will continue to use Meg to support our daughter's learning experience and I can't recommend her enough if your child is struggling and you feel like they are falling further and further behind at school.

I've worked with Lynnet of Lynnet's Professional Touch on many occasions and her service has always exceeded my expectations. I reach out to her often for various editing and writing projects related to my own business and she is always timely and accommodating of my turnaround time. She's great to work with because she asks good questions and always overdelivers. It's clear that she loves what she does and I appreciate that as a repeat client. Her early learning resources are impressive. Her flash cards are premium quality and since they are laminated my daughter has spilled stuff and got them dirty but I just wipe the off and keep using them. I've purchase the ABC, colors, and number flash cards for my little one and will be back for more. When my school-aged kids needed a private tutor I reached out to her. She was patient, she listened to their struggles, helped them work through them, and was prompt and prepared each session. She researched anything she was unfamiliar with and helped my kids develop their research skills as well. She was great and well worth it. Lynnet's Professional Touch offers so many enriching services and delivers every single time. Her work is top notch and her rates are well within reason for the quality of her work. You will get more than what you pay for and you'll be glad that you hired her.

Mr. Phelps tutored both of my children at various times during their schooling. One he tutored for Algebra I and the other child was assisted in Calculus. He was always laid-back in his approach and motivating to both of my kids. I recommend Mr. Phelps, without hesitation, to anyone needing math tutoring services. He was professional in his interactions, flexible with scheduling and most of all, most beneficial in helping my children acquire needed math skills and gain confidence with those skills.

My son had fell behind in third grade and we were seeking a tutor that would help catch him up and prepare him for the fourth grade. Hiring Kati from Bullseye Learning was a God sent. Not only has my son excelled in fourth grade courses, he has also gained confidence and skills sets, I feel he would not have gained in a normative classroom. So we decided to hire her full-time. I am both relieved that my son is learning by leaps and bounds and grateful for the commitment that Kate at Bullseye Learning has displayed in her efforts in educating of my son. Thanks-Bullseye

*** A Life Saver *** Long story short; my Previous Tutor cancelled on us at the last min and I needed a Tutor for the ACT College Exam for my son and Fast. I sent out a desperate plea for help on Thumbtack and I was not interested in " Online Tutors", as they were the only ones available since the ACT & SAT test were a few weeks away. Marlene responded to my Request within a hour and said she would be more than happy to help my son. She was able to squeeze him into her schedule and help. I was so relieved and thankful. After talking to her on the phone we manage to arrange a schedule that would work for both of us. Marlene specializes in ACT/SAT college entrance exams and met us at our local library . After a brief in person interview, she started promptly working with my son. Marlene knew exactly how to work with him; he is a 12th grader and will be applying to college this school year. After their session, we discussed what he learned. It was the first time I have ever seen him so excited about Math before. He told me how Marlene showed him shortcuts, and other tricks to find the answers to the questions on the test. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and would highly recommend Marlene as a tutor. She is very pleasant, well prepared, smart, and knows how to motivate a child. Thanks again Marlene !! Ken B

About

I can bring the reading/math, or, whatever material, down to basics. The simpler I make it for the child to understand, the easier it will be.. I also have several ways of presenting the subject material, and can recognize when screening a child, where the problem(s) exists. Also, children feel at ease with me which allows questions to be asked on their part.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

    What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

    • English
    • Science understanding and reasoning
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
