We needed a dog sitter for our dachshund at the hotel as we were going through a 3 day event preparing for our daughter's burial at sea with EternalReefs. Penny drove to the hotel and stayed in our room each time and spoke to our dog and petted him, sang to him, walked him and consoled him as he was my daughter's dog and suffering from separation anxiety. Penny's sensitivity to our situation was priceless for us...we were able to focus on our grieving and good-byes knowing our dear Taz was being loved in our absence.

I want to start off by saying that our pets are not just our kids, but our only kids. This means that we are very picky pet owners. We have several pets with various needs such as meal, potty, and medication schedules. When we realized we were going to need pet sitters we were very worried about making sure the household would remain stable and not show any disruptions. Anyone with lots of pets knows that when they aren't happy, they will make sure you know. That means cleaning up messes! Kathy has been a lifesaver for us! She has kept to the schedule, is always on-time, and ensures everyone is happy. That also includes us, the nervous pet parents. Kathy sends regular updates to let us know how things are going at home. Even our very nervous old lady (our geriatric shepherd mix) has become friendly and comfortable with Kathy! Butch and Kathy are both very committed to the comfort and well being of the pets they care for. When we get home our pets are calm and happy and we have yet to find any messes to tell us otherwise. We honestly don't know what we would do without B and K!

Deb is everything you need in a pet sitter! She very obviously loves animals and really tries to learn their personalities and needs. I just hired Deb for the first time while I was away for 3 days this week. I was nervous about leaving my two dogs (two pitt mixes) with a new sitter who I'd never worked with before. But Deb is a pro. Before I left, she came to the house to introduce herself and meet my dogs. And then she sent text updates and photos after visiting and really put me at ease. She gave them the walks they needed and spent time with them in the house each visit. She made it so my dogs' routines weren't changed too much, and she made it easy to leave them behind so I could go on vacation. I highly recommend Deb and really trust her with my animals!

When we were interviewing pet sitters 7 years ago, Marcia was the first one to stoop down to meet our girls first. Not only has she pet sit our dogs in our home over the years, she has house sit with them in our home and also has picked them up to keep them outside our home when needed. She is trustworthy and kind hearted and good with the dogs. The daily texts are a godsend to me as I worry about the pups when I am away. I would highly recommend her services.

Thank goodness I found Kendra! She was a pleasure to work with during her stay at my home with my (7) cuddly but irresponsible dogs. She always showed up when she said she would and always communicated with me daily and sent pictures of my babies. A truly lovely lady to work with! Kendra will always be my "go-to" pet sitter, I hope she is always willing to take us on too!! A genuine pleasure to work with. Thank you so VERY much Kendra (hugs).

Jasmine was quick to respond to my inquiry on Thumbtack and offered very good price for lessons. My daughter loved her lesson in big part because Jasmine did a great job connecting to my daughter. You can tell she read and remembered what I wrote in my description of my daughter's horse back riding experience. We will be taking her lessons now on the regular basis. An equestrian place much closer to us that had us on the waiting list called me this week and said that a spot opened up, however after asking my daughter it was clear that she would like to continue taking her lessons from Jasmine!

My animals are members of my family - I have spoken to many pet sitters and had experiences with other pet sitters, but with Shawn at Tampaws - I feel like she treats my animals like if they were her own. I'm a "high maintenance" client and want to know updates on my animals - Shawna delivers that and so much more. I would never leave my pets if I didn't have to for work - but when I have to now, at least I know Shawna is there

Martha goes far beyond just a dog sitter. We had an emergency situation where the dogs were left alone. She went right over to check on them. She communicates well and loves the dogs. I highly recommend Who Let The Dogs Out .

Linda is an amazing pet sitter. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty to take care of our “little ones” when we have been on vacation. And since the dogs are getting up in age, she also comes over once a day while we are at work, to let them out. We highly recommend Linda’s Critter Sitters. We wouldn’t trust anyone else with our “babies!”

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
