Introduction: I have a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Miami. I have been teaching, tutoring, and home schooling for over five years now. I have an absolute passion for what I do. I have great references upon request as well as a Facebook link where satisfied parents leave their comments and opinions. I work individually with each child and develop lesson plans. Parents have a busy life during the day, and I like to be of service by offering to schedule conferences with teachers, so they don't have to do so unless they choose to (all upon parent consent). I always keep close communication with them in order to monitor your child's progress as well as keep up to date with upcoming tests and assignments. I see students for 4-6 hours a week; however, teachers see your child for approximately 32 hours a week. Due to this, I feel that constant communication is key in having a successful year.
I use many teaching styles. If I have a student who has a love of music, I will incorporate this into my teaching in order for him/her to learn or memorize key information. I also do a lot of hands-on activities; when learning about money and change, I have the students use fake money and "purchase" items from the "store". I bring in these items and put a price tag on it. They are to give me correct amount and/or change, etc. Once they have mastered this area, they get to keep the items they "purchased"; this is just one example.
Interactive materials is another format of teaching in which children seem to focus on and love. Technology is very popular now; I like to use it to my advantage by bringing in CDs and using computer software and iPad apps. Children need a constant change in order to maintain engaged and more importantly, enjoy learning. Using various styles and materials rather than just pencil and paper assures that your child learns and looks forward to his sessions.
