Outstanding. Having nearly 30 years in the residential and commercial property management field I certainly understand the value of top quality, responsive and professional services. Johnny was a pleasure to deal with. He communicated extremely well from the beginning of the project to the end. I felt comfortable with him from the moment we met. I love my new flooring and I am looking forward to having Johnny back to do more!

Al was a pleasure to work with. He was there for me when another contractor who promised me to do the work fell through. He is very personable, knowledgeable, trustworthy and I would definitely call him again.

He worked efficiently the whole time, was courteous when I needed to take a call and came prepared with everything we needed to complete the work. As a new homeowner to a 1925's craftsman cottage in Historic St Pete, I had more than a few items to "tune" up. One of which was a garage that had been badly deteriorated by termites and neglect. I was not ready to tear it down but wanted to see if it could be salvaged. I met with several contractors - most of which didn't want to take it on. Ray accepted the challenge! He was very detailed with his proposal so that I understood my costs and kept me in the loop as the project was under way. I think it ended up being quite a bit more than he had expected, but he held to his quoted price and we worked through additional requirements as they came up outside of the initial scope. He was timely, and his workmanship is excellent. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to arrange for a dumpster, but did not expect the amount of debris to be as great as it was, and spent extra $$ on clean-up. Thanks Ray - will use you again!

It's a pleasure having Jim do work for us. He's polite, punctual and does a great job. We can always depend on him to get the work done in the time he says it will take. When he's finished he leaves everything as clean as it was before he started. If there's a better way to do the work, Jim will think of it. His prices are always very reasonable. He has done many jobs for us, including repairing a ceiling that had been badly damaged from a major leak. He also disassembled a defective 15 foot built in wall unit, sanded, repainted and reinstalled it. It looks better than it did when it was new! While other contractors told us the whole unit had to be replaced, Jim found a better, less expensive way to fix it.

Steve is one of the most trust-worthy and kind contractors I think you can find. I always felt that he was out to help my wife and I get the final product we were looking for with our kitchen paint job, with never an ounce of pressure to make decisions outside of our timeline or our budget. He was always extremely flexible and helpful in our entire process. He was also very sweet to my wife and I and put up with our picky, Type-A nature at the end. We kept asking for little things to be fixed or adjusted and he just kept coming back and doing it saying that he was only happy if we were happy with the final product. He even installed new cabinets that we bought and wanted to add to an empty space in the kitchen. He painted the entire kitchen and all existing cabinets as well as the new cabinets. There were no unpleasant surprises either - all good things. We trusted him to also be in our house when we weren't there and he always respected that. His pricing was great as well and came with a five-year warranty. I would recommend him to anyone.

We got stood up by our last contractor who did not finish the job, so we called on Eric to make it right. He gave us a fair price upfront and got the work done quickly. He did a phenomenal job and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

Tom was wonderful & honest. Which is hard to find in Florida. He's not the typical contractor looking to overcharge snowbirds etc. Will be hiring again to redo bathroom in my unit. Guarantees his work for a year.

Having to find someone to fix another contractor's mistakes is not a fun nor an enjoyable process. I contacted Mr. Service Pro and have been thoroughly satisfied and happy with the complete process. They came out, looked at my needs and provided me a detailed scope of the work to be done and costs associated. Once they started, they called in a specialist to finish out one aspect of the job which did not cost be anymore but, ultimately provided great peace of mind. When I need a handyman in the future, I know to call Mr. Service Pro, you should, too.

Robert and his associate worked to redo my entire master bathroom as well as installed a new outside door and frame and built me a new deck. His attention to detail and explanation of work needed along the way gave me a feeling of involvement all through the jobs. I would definitely hire him again - he did what he said he would do (plus more as necessary) and was finished when he said he would be ( a rarity among contractors!) A pleasure to work with and a professional who truly aims to please

From the quote to the cleanup the job was perfect! Both Debbie and Ian listened to my needs and helped me to determine the best flooring product. They flexed to my schedule of installing before family came to visit on short notice without any issues. The installers went out of their way to keep me informed, asking me how things looked as they were proceeding, and did a fantastic cleanup job! I will use them again for my future flooring projects! Steven listened closely to our requirements - even as they changed as we began the job. He arrived on schedule, worked quickly and cleanly, per our direction, and completed the job on the committed schedule. What more could one as of a contractor?

Sam did an excellent job on my home. It is a very large two story home and he completed it within a week. Extremely knowledgeable and professional. Matter of fact, he just completed my next door neighbors home and has more to do in the neighborhood!

I would highly recommend Phoenix Electrical & Mechanical Contractors! They installed a whole house generator for my dad. When the gas company flaked, Phoenix Electrical stepped in when they didn’t have to and solved the problem. They are professional, honest, they clean up after themselves, and the quality of work they provide is superior to anything I have seen lately.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
