Andy quoted a reasonable price for an exterior house painting. We are very pleased with the results. He actually was able to paint our house a week earlier than he initially quoted. Andy is very professional and did an excellent job.

Bob did some great work on both of my bathrooms. Upstairs he replaced some water damaged sub-floor, repaired a water leak, re-built part of the tub/shower wall, replaced some shower tiles, and regrouted the tile around the faucet area. Then he installed some new vinyl plank flooring, cabinets, and a new sink. Downstairs he installed new vinly plank flooring, cabinet, sink and towel rods, removed the old flourescent lighting, installed new wiring, new canned lights, and some new electrical outlets. He also painted the interior walls on the whole house. Bob did an excellent job in a very reasonable time frame. I highly recommend his work.

Mike provided excellent value and performance with tremendous flexibility. Due to delays on our house purchase, Mike remained flexible so that we can begin painting prior carpet installation and move-in. Mike worked fast, efficient and the quality is outstanding. Mike provided us 1,700 square feet of Sheet Rock repair, wall paper removal, painting four bedrooms and hallway including trim work in four days. He worked long hours to keep our project on track. Will highly recommend. I received another quote for more wallpaper removal and additional painting. He even stayed late to offload some carpet since I didn't have any other help. What an outstanding professional!

I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with this company. When I first met Martin he was extremely personable and knowledgeable. I instantly felt comfortable and assured I was going to get exactly what I invisioned for my home. The previous owner of our house painted the walls dark purple and the walls had more holes that I could count. There were fake outlets covering holes... My husband and I knew if we wanted our house to look decent we needed to hire a professional. Martin patched our walls and sanded down some of the drip marks from the thick layer the previous owners slapped on. I had to be at work all day so he kept me in the loop with periodical pictures of the project and was finished ahead of schedule. He turned this house into what we now call home! I am definitely saving this contact for when we are ready to redo our kitchen and recommend him to everyone!

Randolph Services painted, installed fans, and lighting when I moved into my new house this past August. Since then, I have used him on several other projects. His work is outstanding and he goes beyond what would normally expected. His painting is the envy of my neighbors because there are no streaks on the walls and the ceiling line is perfect. After the first of the year, I have already scheduled with him to build more shelving. It goes without saying that I can highly recommend him.

Dennis and his crew, Kenny and Bennie, were a delight! They showed up on time every day; did an excellent job painting my home interior, cleaned up daily...all at a fair and reasonable price. Dennis also did several little "extras" without charge. Customer service at its best! Would highly recommend.

From the moment my husband started talking to Scott he knew this was the person for the job. Scott understood immediately what my husband was trying to achieve and made great suggestions that improved upon the original idea. Scott not only painted our pool fence and screened in porch perfectly, but reinforced the posts and columns and installed all new screens. He and April worked side by side creating a whole new look for our porch. It was dingy and old and dilapidated. Now it is white, bright and looks brand new. Scott and April went above and beyond what was expected and we will have more projects for them coming up!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
