I was tasked with planning my best friend's bachelorette weekend in Ft. Lauderdale. This meant I had to account for the dietary restrictions of 18 girls: from 2 people with Celiac disease to fish allergies to vegetarians, it was Chef Jeff to the rescue. Chef Jeff prepared a taco bar for us night 1, brought us delicious salads with a broad array of yummy sandwiches day 2 and came over day 3 to prepare omelettes for a made to order style breakfast. Everything was amazing and Chef Jeff was a pro. He consulted with me constantly to ask informed questions about our Celiac girls and thought of innovative solutions to give them something delicious: like the cauliflower tortillas he made night 1. The girls raved about the food and Chef Jeff all weekend. Not only that, Chef Jeff was fun, professional and amazing to work with. He was super flexible and willing to work with me as I had to stick to a budget. Thanks so much Chef Jeff, you made our weekend unforgettable!!!

We were very lucky to have Chef Tim! His professionalism is outstanding; he replied when he said he would, answered our calls on time, and made it a point to understand my graduation party event, our tastes, my allergy, and even the tastes of our guests. I wanted a refined and elegant menu that didn't include anything having to do with pizza, pasta, salad, or bbq. He produced a menu that was also printable (great for framing and putting on the table for your guests to admire) that was delectable yet not too filling; (med-rare lamb lollipops, boursin-stuffed prosciutto wrapped dates) but also not stuffy- we also recommend the beer-cheese fondue! My favorite is the curry-chicken spoons. He arrived at our event in appropriate Chef attire with helpful written instructions and felt like a talented member of the family. Our only regret is we wish we had hired one of his staff to further execute, plate and pass the delcious-ness! It's hard to do it all. If this is available- DO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. Additionally, the VALUE of hiring Chef Tim is very good- there was an abundance of extras and in all the parties I have had, (there have been many) I was surprised to see that my guests never ceased to be enjoying the food. Well done Chef Tim, you are sure to have repeat business from the Sanford-Basiaga household.

Cynthia did an amazing job for my mother's memorial. Everything was very affordable for what we wanted. She arrived promptly and helped set up the layout for the food. And most importantly, the food tasted amazing and looked wonderful! We received nothing but compliments with the catering food. I highly recommend her cheesecake cups and barbecue meatballs! I would highly recommend C&F Catering.

We hosted a Brunch on Sunday after our son's wedding in Stuart on Saturday. we were staying in a Vacation Rental Home. In Port St Lucie. The event was enjoyed by everyone that attended. ( approx 40) In planning the event Stacey was very helpful in making suggestions and was always prompt in returning emails, calls, and texts. We were planning this from out of state so we were very pleased with the decision we made to go with Ellie's Deli. The food was presented very attractively and there was generous portions. Stacey and her assistant were very friendly and helpful. The guests were impressed with their efficiency and friendly manner. The event was held from 10 am to 2 pm. Two days before the event I orderd extra chairs. They were delivered promptly. All in all we were very pleased.

Lori catered a dinner party for 7 in our home. She was so lovely to work with from day one. She was very professional, tidy and her pricing is fair. She is very flexible with food allergies and all types of dietary restrictions. The food was tasty--especially the bacon candy and the chocolate mousse. Overall she is a delight and I would enthusiastically recommend her to anyone. Her assistant Deb was also fabulous and a pleasure to work with.

We hired Mr. G's catering for a 50th anniversary dinner (drop off) for 11 people. He was prompt in responding and sent a detailed proposal, which he was happy to make adjustments to. At the dinner he set up the food in an attractive way, and when the dinner was over, he came back and removed everything. The food itself was delicious and well prepared. His price was very reasonable and his service was excellent. I would highly recommend him for catering a dinner.

Cafe Delish and Renee was absolutely Amazing! I would use her again for any event that I have - PLUS recommend her to any of my friends, family and colleagues. Café Delish was very easy to work with, had a spectacular presentation, and "delish-ish" food! I called up with short notice (probably not recommended!), and Renee was easy going, was able to talk to me and know what I wanted and to create exactly what was need to make my Dad's 70th surprise party exactly as I had envisioned - including a 70 in an ice sculpture! How many caterers can do that for you in the last minute?! Her prices were very reasonable. She was right on time, and picked up to make everything very easy for me. Everyone raved about the food and the presentation (and I got the credit!). Referrals for Renee will be coming! I will have to share pictures when I download them from my real camera! Many thanks to a job over what was expected!

I had the pleasure of eating with Di Big Jerk during lunch at work one day...the Jerk burger I had was phenomenal and packed with flavor. That same night I ate with Di Big Jerk but tried something different. I had the shrimp tacos and fell in love all over again the flavors were like fireworks. Y'all have to try anything on the truck you will not be disappointed.

Chef Robyn was the caterer at our wedding and handled everything to perfection. She coordinated her own team of professionals and, while dealing with some kitchen equipment malfunctions on site (our rental house oven didn't work!), Chef Robyn somehow executed a delicious meal that was the star of our special day. She was dressed fashionably and professionally when she came out of the kitchen a few times to check on things and to make sure we had a special plate so that the two of us got to taste each of the amazing 'passed apps' while we were busy during the cocktail hour. Everyone raved about the food & the service, even going back to the dinner buffet multiple times. I would recommend Chef Robyn to anyone for an event large or small.

Chef Mer catered our bachelorette brunch and the food was fantastic! We had French toast, guava & cheese pastry, two kinds of quiche, breakfast potatoes (huge hit!), fruit skewers and bacon. Our guests were raving about the food and ate 2nds and 3rds. He set everything up perfectly and showed up right on time. If you're looking for an organized, well priced and delicious caterer...this is your guy! Thank you so much Chef Mer!

Jessica provided several excellent small plates to begin the evening, as well as a main course which paired well with the cigars & whiskey. I received multiple compliments throughout the evening on the quality and originality of the menu. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
