Great first lesson! Andres seemed extremely well prepared for this pre Calculus lesson. He was very patient and found alternative ways to get my daughter to understand the concept. He was also very personable. We are looking forward to more lessons with Andres!

Audrey Bridgewater is an excellent math tutor. She is dedicated to her students, flexible, and sets goals for her students to succeed. Audrey tutored my son in Algebra II and occasionally helped my daughter with 7th grade pre-algebra. She goes above and beyond in helping my kids prepare for tests and understand the material not only in the current chapter but forthcoming ones as well. I would recommend Audrey Bridgewater as a tutor for any student who finds math a challenge.

Dr. Dubler is a skilled tutor that knows that taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports, dance and theater; there are many factors that influence someone’s performance. Dr. Dubler not only shares his passion for setting students up for PSAT and SAT test taking; but he provides applicable hints for students to think about in advance, such as: what to eat the week before the test, and many other tricks to the trade of successful test taking. He will arrive promptly and professionally and will assign homework in between his sessions and encourages his students to do what they can do, with the reality they have their normal extracurricular activities and homework to attend to. His longevity in this field speaks for his abilities to be committed to his passion for SAT tutoring. Dr. Dubler is very experienced and highly educated. He is an excellent match for students who do not mind being asked to explain their train of thought, as his expectation is a high level of interaction. This is one way he reinforces what he is teaching. He is also full on fun magic tricks along the way, which will certainly keep things as he likes them “entertaining.”

Melinda worked with our daughter for two years. At the time our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and she was struggling at school. Melinda was able to bring the best in her. Melinda taught her organizational skills, comprehension and memorization techniques and critical thinking. She helped our daughter in English, Social Sciences, Public speaking and writing. Our daughter went from a C student to an A student. Melinda gave her the boost and self confidence she needed to start high school. We will always be grateful to Melinda. Highly recommended.

Mr. Arnie has been helping my son in Algebra and has made a huge difference! Not only have his test grades gone from a C- to an A- average in just 1 grading period, but my son is really understanding the base concepts that will give him a foundation for future lessons. Arnie has been extremely patient and has brought very complex problems down to a level easily understood so there is no more frustration. He genuinely cares about helping his students succeed! He has been very professional and always on time and prepared to teach. I would highly recommend him to any student who wants to understand but is not learning effectively in the classroom.

It is my pleasure to write a recommendation for Herb Tamres' legal, editing, and writing skills, as well as his teaching skills. In my final year in law school, I worked under Herb's supervision in the General Counsel's Office of a major firm. Herb was a terrific supervisor and mentor. He gave myself and my colleagues great advice about how to improve our writing and how to better use caselaw to support our reasoning. Herb was incredibly patient with us as we climbed up the learning curve, and he made sure we were appropriately challenged in the process. Herb was always willing to listen to us, and to discuss any difficulties we were having with particular assignments. He also exhibited a sincere interest in us as people, which I believe is another attribute that made him a superb teacher. I have been a lawyer for over 20 years now, and currently work in the New York City Law Department. I am certain that working for Herb made me a better writer -- and a better lawyer -- than I would otherwise have been. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me during the work day at 212-356-2433.

John Way was my teacher for Physics 1 and Physics C: ME. For the two years that I had him he was great. He always knew what he was talking about and would go in depth in his explanations, which allowed me to really grasp the concepts that he taught. When someone was struggling, he wouldn't just leave them behind, he would spend whatever class time he could on them as well as his lunch time and time after school. He is a teacher that everyone loves and cherishes at McArthur High School.

We hired Kyle to teach algebra 1 to our 8th grade home schooled daughter and couldn't be happier. He is not only a brilliant mathematician, but an incredibly gifted teacher as well. Our daughter looked forward to her sessions and felt completely comfortable with his teaching style and earned a perfect score on her end of course exam. Kyle was timely, accommodating, incredibly warm and friendly. Truly the best of the best!

George is not a teacher -- George is a Coach and the reason I say that is because he does not simply teach but actually helps the student on how to learn and master a topic. He not only focused on ensuring my son got the concepts down but on also how my son could improve his test performance. After just one week of lessons, my son for the first time scored a 98 and a 100 on his quiz and exam respectively. Based on our experience we would highly recommend George.

Earlier this year my son began working with Dawn for Tutoring for Reading Comprehension, and also Math. My son is in (public)Elementary school, and had been really struggling in larger sized classrooms to master particular concepts. Working with Dawn has been the right solution to address my child's glaring Academic needs. Dawn is a well prepared Educator/Tutor who cares deeply for her students. What I noted is that she can tailor her lesson plan, or the teaching approach to meet the specific needs of the student. She works really hard with them to raise their level of learning, and she is passionate about teaching. Her passion is honestly what sold me, she brings it every single day and it is infectious for the student she also tutors! I feel very confident that Dawn is the Tutor you should definitely consider for tutoring your child! I have been so pleased with Dawn's effort teaching my son, coupled with his improvement in the classroom that I extended our agreement for her to tutor again this calendar school year.

I was a student in Mrs. Ridley’s algebra class in 8th grade. I was having trouble understanding the material. When I didn’t, I stayed after school with Mrs. Ridley. It meant a great deal to me that she cared greatly about how I did in math. We covered the homework and anything else I did not understand. She had many strategies and ideas to help me understand the concepts. She was always available for help and Mrs. Ridley would create extra worksheets or even notes to help me. I met with Mrs. Ridley many times per week throughout the school year. I hated math before I met Mrs. Ridley. After being her student that all changed. I had never met someone so determined to make ones math experience positive. She made up songs to help remember formulas and to this day I remember all of them. Another great quality about Mrs. Ridley is that she is extremely patient. It took me a while to understand information, but she stuck with me. She would slowly work me through the problem step by step without giving me the answer. To be honest, there is nothing that she could have done better. She was caring, patient, a great teacher, a friend and will work with you until you understand the material. I am now a freshman taking geometry and doing really well. The base of geometry is algebra and without her I would be lost. I cannot thank her enough. Hannah Sinks

Inspiring, enlightening, engaging...excellent! "Ms Calder is the best teacher you could ever have," is what my thirteen year old son says when prompted to say something to his peers about his teacher. "If you have any question about language arts literature or history she can answer them." When you ask me how I feel about Ms Calder, I say that my child is receiving a world class education in her midst. As a child, I was at the top of my class in primary, secondary, and in undergrad. My child is learning more, as a young teen, than I learned in my first years at the university! After one short year with Ms Calder, he is understanding how the world works; and he attracts adults into conversation, engaging and impressing them. He has had a great experience, being her student. Ms. Calder has an innate ability to connect with all of her students and make them highly successful. A young, vibrant mother of four beautiful children, and a highly effective teacher for many years; she embraces each and every one of her students in her classroom as if they were her own. She was very patient with my son, from the start, and read into learning styles and issues. He is understanding concepts much better. He looks forward to going back to school, every day. She has taught students with many different learning styles, too. As a public school teacher, she has overcome many obstacles relating to having inspired children with little appeal for school; and she has brought out the best in the formally gifted children and high achieving. She breaks her teaching into understandable language, yet challenges her students to learn things their parents never imagined they could, at such a young age. She asks intelligent questions to make sure her students "get it." And from what we can tell, her students exceed the averages on standardized tests like end of course exams, and assessments. She had great lesson plans for her students she doesn't just make her students "do the work." She asks questions to make sure that her students understand all of the information that is being presented. She makes sure that you walk away with a great understanding of what is being presented. This is testament to the results her students attain top results in testing situations. I highly recommend Ms. Calder for any profession involving language, writing, and getting the best out of people. I will certainly use her services when my children apply for scholarships and college. -Kathy Diaz, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

For the last 5 months, Andrew has been the first and only person I've gone to for suggestions and edits to my essays. He's helped me with everything from my almost 30 college applications to scholarships and enrichment programs. I've always trusted his judgement, as being a published writer and journalist it goes without saying that he is a pro. He always found a way help me make my stories come across in the most original and true to me way possible. I would call him on the phone when I had writer's block and he would just have a conversation with me and cause me to have an epiphany. He is undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons I'm able to say that not only was I accepted to 20 schools, but I'm attending an ivy league institution this fall, and am also the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from a foundation. He is extremely patient, humble, and willing to dedicate as much time as necessary to make your writing shine. I couldn't have made it to this point without his guidance.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
