FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We speak at Universities quite often, attend conventions, and make sure our engineers always stay on top of both technical and cultural trends in the music industry. Often our staff audits classes at universities to stay ahead of the game.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
My friends growing up (Speaking from President of Studio 18, Connor Smith) my friends were all great musicians, but they didn't know how to work together, record their music, or take their craft to a professional level. There was no point for me to crumble my crew even more by contributing more chaos. I wanted to unite and bring direction. Me stepping in as a producer and engineer was just what we all needed to progress together. I had to be the leader, and the "studio guy". Since the conception of my basement studio in New Jersey I'm now on to my 3rd studio which is comprised of 3 buildings, 5 studio rooms, and a staff of over 20 INCREDIBLY talented people.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Working with the rapper "Niko Is" has really raised our standards and expanded our horizons with the limitless possibilities of hip hop music. Rapper Talib Kweli (whom we've also had the pleasure of working with) introduced Niko to legendary MC's Reakwon and Q Tip as the best rapper he's ever met. "Rap" your head around that last statement ( Big Pun intended). Now imagine working in the studio with that guy for countless hours. Yeah... we know a lot about making hip hop sound really good. And that's not all we're good at, we also just finished working with James Brown's Original drummer for a funk/house project and we recently had Michael Winslow and even Earth Wind and Fire's band stopped by. We like to stay active with unique and profound projects. If you can put yourself in that category, we know how to make your recordings impactful!
