Scotty and The Riot were great! Very personable and attentive to the details of our requests. Punctual - set started right on time. Was an outdoor event and when a storm rolled up with 30 mins left in the gig, they quickly adapted and wrapped up the remaining 30 minutes indoors. Everyone at the event was very complimentary of the band. Would hire again in a heartbeat!

Ryan is truly the Sherpa that guides you on the journey of inspired learning and appreciation for the guitar, no matter what your starting point. Yes, he most definitely has been to the summit himself as demonstrated by a mastery of many genres, styles, techniques, and a natural improvisation voice, not to mention his gigs and the musician company he keeps. Regardless, he knows the path and is personally and genuinely invested in helping you get where you want to go. I began lessons with him in the summer of 2013 to learn Jazz and musical theory for improvisation. Ryan has demystified the modes and helped me feel comfortable with the notes and patterns up and down the neck. He has a knack for laying out a logical step-wise approach for building a foundation that makes successive concepts more understandable. Lessons are very relaxed and often include an exchange of ideas that run from guitar care, to latest rock or jazz artists, to dumb questions you were always embarrassed to ask about music theory, to “how do you see the patterns on the neck”, to asking his suggestions on how to improve on an original song, to a variety of ways to practice or “think” about lesson material, to…..well you get it. Ryan has a depth of knowledge on so many aspects of playing music. He also has an uncanny ability to know “where” you are in the learning process and laser-like vision and ears as you play. Most often he understands your challenged moments intuitively and can offer a fix on the spot, or a practice suggestion, or a supplemental concept that puts things into perspective. Finally, I admire Ryan for his natural ability to balance the rigors of technique with inspired musical ideas. In short, you will discover that Ryan is the real deal, both personally and as your Sherpa instructor!

We have seen JP perform at local restaurants and clubs and hired him for a class reunion. He is a lot of fun and enjoys getting the crowd involved in the act whenever they are willing. He is quite talented and can sing and play a variety of music. His set up makes the audience feel like they are listening to a full band. We believe you will be equally impressed and highly recommend him for your next event!

I've been taking bass lessons from Jim Coley close to three years now and the experience has been nothing short of amazing. I came into it knowing absolutely nothing about bass with the exception of knowing I wanted to play. I didn't even know the note names of each open string! I'm still learning and have much to learn but I couldn't have picked a better teacher. He's patient, supportive, encourging and experienced. I came in aiming to be as well rounded as I could be and he has covered so much ground with me in a diverse curriculum spanning every genere possible. He is also more than willing to teach you songs by your favorite bands or artists. He goes above and beyond every time and has been flexible with me at every turn. Its more than worth your time and is one of the most valuable insvestments I have made since moving here. I strongly implore anyone with the desire to learn to take some cash and spend a few minutes with him and see how it goes. You'll be glad you did!

The Retros are a very professional band and easy to work with. I have a couple of special request and they went above and beyond. They played to songs that everyone was singing and dancing to. I was concerned that most of my guests would not dance but The Retros had them on the dance floor in no time. I am going to hire the band for my annual New Years Eve Party.

I have been working with William for about three years and he always goes above and beyond my expectations. He is very creative when playing music he only has chord charts for and always makes the music sound AMAZING (most times better than the original) even if he doesn't really know how it goes. He is very talented, very patient and always very kind.

We were extremely impressed with our experience with the Pete and Pete Band! They performed for 4 hours for a family and friends gathering of 80+ at our home. Multiple people inquired where I had found such a great band! I would highly recommend and will be hiring them for future parties.

We had Deb Bowman & The Big Love Band performed at RiverPointe Event Venues grand opening event in October 2015 near Montgomery, and it was such a blast. They played a variety of favorite songs all night long from swing to Latin all the way to blues, dance songs and rock! The crowd was thrilled! The band professional, fun, and such a pleasure to work with. Worth every penny! I will hire them again and again. In fact, Deb is singing for my birthday party next week! Deb Bowman has several combinations of her bands, from a solo artist with accompanist to a huge party band with brass. I've heard them all at various events. Buy all you can afford! The bigger the band, the bigger and better the party. They are not only accomplished world class musicians, they are ENTERTAINERS! Big difference. You get Both with Deb Bowman. Your event or club with have a pulse rarely experienced with other bands. I have followed her performances since 2006. Book early for the holiday season or you will be disappointed. Deb is also well connected with an excellent marketing system that can promote your event to thousands of contacts if you wish.

Hiring Greg Shearer and his band was one one of the best decisions my wife and I made in planning our wedding. Greg met with us before the big day to see if we had any special requests and to go over the schedule of events during the reception. It was nice to know that after hiring Mr. Shearer we didn't have to worry about audio or the entertainment. Thank you for making our wedding day the best it could be.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
