Mr.Preze and his men installed a 10 zone irrigation system at our home. He and his team exceeded our expectations. They not only installed a quality product, they did it at a fair price,IN a timely manner. At the same time they were neat and courteous at all times. What we were most impressed with was the time spent to protect and put back the yard and landscape as he completed each zone. At the end of the project he spent the time to walk us through each zone, set up the controller, and showed us how to use it. Preze irrigation brought value to our home.

My backdoor threshold was rotten and needed to be replaced. All other contractors indicated that I would have to order a new door, but Mr. Wilkins said he could replace the damaged wood and reseal it. He quoted a fair price and was able to schedule the job quickly. Due to some of the water damage, my wood floor needed repair as well. I had some extra pieces and he was able to replace the floor too. Work was done in a few hours. I am really happy with the work performed.

I have been looking for a good landscaping company to take on my yard for almost 3 years. Every-time there seems to clash between them and my mother. Sometimes they don't do the work properly or over charge us. With Portillo Landscape they did neither. They were polite, understanding, and hard working. Our yard is not an easy feat and yet they were fast & diligent. We even signed-up for every two weeks. Which is saying something since my mother never agrees to that but she finally found a company she likes and is agreeable. I would recommend this company to anyone and everyone.

Great work and we’ll definitely hire again! We live on a steep hill and vines and blackberries had overtaken our juniper. They are the first landscapers we’ve hired who actually pulled up the problems by the roots instead of just cutting it back. Our yard looks so much better! Plus their responsiveness was great and they showed up when they were supposed to. Thank you!!

Simply cannot say enough positive things about Atwood Contracting! Wes and his company were recommended by a friend when I needed someone to reclaim my yard following major storm damage. Wes showed up when promised to provide an estimate and began work when he said he would, as well as finished on time and on budget. He honestly took a lot of stress off of me as I was dealing with other contractors for home repair at the same time. Those contractors even told me how impressed they were with his work and effort. To me, that says an awful lot.

James did an amazing job of my mess of a lawn!! We weren’t able to keep up with the volume of leaves that kept falling and James happily came to the rescue. In one day, he managed to clear both our front and back yards leaving it looking clean and inviting! His price was hard to beat and his quick response time is something almost unheard of in the landscape business. I HIGHLY recommend James to conquer any degree of care your yard may need!

I only wish I had contracted Mack Hamilton when I began my landscaping project. I hired Mack to re-do a mess that the first company created. His knowledge was clearly obvious as he explained what had to be done and gave quote. He answered my questions with clarity and confidence. I was very pleased with the entire project which included planting trees, moving scrubs, building a superb retainer wall and installing proper drainage. I would not hesitate to hire Mack Hamilton again!h

There are not enough words to describe these guys. From the moment I first met them, they were professional, polite, and had extremely good advice about colors and the direction in which to lay the flooring. They knew I was worried that my cat would get out, and took extra care with the doors to make sure she was safe. They explained every step of the way to me, so I knew what they were doing and why. Even though the rest of the city was shut down due to snow and ice, they managed to make it to the store to get the materials, and then make it to my house to start the project. The snow and ice put them a little behind schedule, but I wasn't concerned about it because I understood the conditions, and they worked hard to make up for lost time. They put everything back, cleaned up, and the price is exactly what they said it would be. There were no surprise charges. They left me the receipts for the materials. They work hard and would recommend them to anyone I know....or don't know!

The contractor showed up even tho it just rained and he couldn’t cut it the same day, just to meet and solidify the estimate. He then returned on time to get the job completed. I really value his integrity and work ethic

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
