The job was done on time at a fair price. There was some minor miscommunication on the full scope of the job but I wouldn't hesitate to hire All Steps Covered tree services again.

The job was bigger than originally thought but Adrian and his helper were able to clear the trees and shrubs over three days. They did a great job.

Great to work with. Austin put up with my crazy sleep schedule. He and his crew removed at least 11 huge tree stumps from my yard, with two of the largest being in a tight space between my house/deck and my neighbor's fence. They removed them without any damage to either structure. They completed the work in a very timely fashion, gave me fantastic advice, and even acted as contractor in finding me a company to build a fence for me. I highly recommend Overstreet Lawn Care. I will be having them return in the spring to help me with my landscaping.

I'm very pleased I worked with Juan on this project. We lost several very large tree limbs in an ice storm. Juan contracted to cut /dispose and when the job turned out to be more complicated than anticipated and took a lot longer, Juan made sure the job got done whereas many others would have tried to renegotiate or change the deal. He's a stand up guy.

Highly Recommend. Great communication. Very Professional. ArbSmart did an excellent job pruning a large oak tree in our front yard. Jon-Erik was very careful with the prep and setup. He understood our request and worked to assure us that only the necessary branches would be removed. He arrived right on time and completed the job without delay. The team then cleaned up the area and hauled the trimmings away. We will definitely call ArbSmart for any tree services in the future. S.Fincher Acworth

I've used clean cut lawn service twice this month. My yard has many sweet-gum trees and requires sweet-gum removal as well as weed eating. The final result both times was a job well done. I will continue to use CCLS for maintaing my lawn.

I got multiple quotes from tree service companies here on thumbtack and the price of their quotes immediately stood out. I then checked their license and insurance ( please do check on that as you don’t want uninsured workers to cut your trees to injure them or have the tree laying on your roof) and found that they have all the documents. People are very professional and gave me genuine advice. Will definitely use them again!

Francisco Tree Prunning was exactly what I was looking for. I live in a very wooded neighborhood and I have lots of trees in my yard. I didn't want to cut the trees down just cleaned up the broken limbs. He did an awesome job! Very easy to work with. He is professional and cut trees for a living. Broken tree limbs is just as dangerous as a fallen tree. He understood this. I would definitely 100% recommend Francisco Tree Prunning to anyone. Hurricane season is coming and I will be a return customer of Francisco Tree Prunning. Francisco Tree Prunning service charge was perfect for my budget!! I am happy I chose Francisco Tree Prunning for my tree project!

Very pleased with our revamped back yard!! After grading, we no longer get massive puddles across the entire yard, and the sod is already greening up nicely. :) Highly recommend; DYG Landscaping was able to completely clear brambles and underbrush, grade the entire yard, lay sod, lay pine straw, and even prune a tree for us in a single day! Fantastic work!!

Where to start! I feel like we've gained an outdoor landscaping partner for the long haul. We had a huge tree fall in our yard from our neighbors house this spring. (we live close to Virginia Highlands) It destroyed the front yard. We were looking to re-do the front flower beds anyway and then realized after this we needed an entirely new lawn. We got multiple quotes for a full sod restoration. (changed from fescue to Zoysia) Working with Nelson and his entire team at Legacy Outdoor Living was an absolute pleasure! It's rare to find a company that communicates well from start to finish in the landscaping business. Outdoor stuff does not always go as planned but Nelson did a good job being in constant contact as we dealt with the natural ebbs and flows of the calendar due to weather, etc. Nelson spent a lot of time with us on the front end of the project discussing vision, time frame, expectations, etc. He was quick on his quote turnaround and was sensitive to all of our requests, including budget. (Legacy is very reasonable and we feel were the best value out of all the quotes we got) - plus you get what you pay for and these guys are well worth it! We had them take out all the existing destroyed fescue, replace with Zoysia and also take out all of our old and dying trees, shrubs and plants in our plant beds lining the house. The new yard and plant beds look exceptional! One thing Nelson will really try to work hard on, is helping you build out a yard that looks great, but is also manageable for a person without a "green" thumb- My wife and I are now excited about taking care of our new lawn as opposed to being intimidated by all the previous work needed to tend to an "over planted" front yard. (prior owner's doing) We cannot wait to use Legacy later this year on the back yard project! Nacho is awesome as well! Great to work with! Sincerely, HK A happy "in-town" Atlanta customer!

Lucio went above and beyond with the tree cutting project! He was very professional, turned up on time, courteous and above all was very attentive to details. He took additional time in cleaning up the area very thoroughly. It felt like Lucio didn't do this as just another job, but he spent concentrated time and effort to ensure that he did an excellent job and he definitely over delivered! And the price that he charged was very reasonable. It was a true pleasure to have Lucio take up our project and it was a positive experience. I would recommend Lucio for any landscaping/tree trimming projects without any hesitation.

Thank you Mario! Mario worked within my budget and time constraints. He was conscious of the stomp debris over into a neighboring yard. In addition, he worked through a case of poison ivy which he contracted on my job. Yes! I would hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
