We hired Scotty and his band The Riot to play for our school event. Scotty was very easy and flexible to work with. He was easy to get in touch with and promptly returned phone calls and replied to emails. He and his band mates showed up to the venue on time and played appropriate music. They sounded great! Everyone in attendance at our event really enjoyed the band. We will definitely hire them again.

Our son began lessons with Ryan 5 years ago, after becoming bored and stagnant with his previous teacher of 2 years. With a child that was very talented and serious at pursuing a possible music career,we really wanted to make sure he had the best teacher for him that pushed him and challenged him but at the same time did it in a way that would encourage him, not discourage him.Because our son was easily bored,we also needed a teacher that could teach many different styles or genres, knew theory and could teach sight reading and was able to move at whatever pace was needed to challenge our son.Ryan worked on rock, blues jazz and classical guitar, sight reading ear training, song writing skills, improvisation only to name a few,but above all taught him to work hard and never give up.He helped him prepare for a very challenging audition to get into a very competitive music college, Belmont University. Ryan made sure that when the audition came up, our son was ever so confident when his audition time came up and was totally prepared in every possible way.Through the years, our son developed a strong sense of trust and friendship that he has been able to use as he is in college as a sophomore. While in college, our son will periodically still rely on Ryan for his professional views on different challenges. He also looks forward to breaks and summers to get together with Ryan and play, learn and get advice. It was never about Ryan making his fee,but about making sure our son was pushed during every lesson to the best of his abilities.Even if it meant staying over a few minutes or calling during the week to check and make sure he was able to work at the music homework he had given and was not frustrated. We highly recommend Ryan Strickland. He is a very professional dedicated musician that loves his job and will go over and beyond for all of his students. We feel as parents that Ryan pushed our son to help him fulfill his utmost dreams and passion and realize there are no limits.

Steven, Hope this message gets to you as I would like to thank you for your performance at the Atlanta Jazz Festival 2010.  Your band had a great set and I feel my trip up from Gainesville FL was worth the trip just to hear your band's version of Cassie's Theme by Grover Washington.  If you have a recording of that please tell me how to get my hands on it. I am so glad I made it to the concert early.  I feel that your band and Trombone Shorty were the highlights of the night and I am a Bass Player.   Can't say it enough, you guys are an incredibly gifted Jazz Band. Great work on the saxes and please let me know the name of the bass player again.  He worked the pocket well and every one of your band members played their role.  Great groove and pocket, your entire set. If you guys ever play in Florida let me know, once again, an incredible set at the Jazz Festival! Kraig G.

We couldn't be happier with our experience in both seeing JP perform at clubs and restaurants and also hiring him for our anniversary party. His love for music shines through in each show. Not only is he talented in singing, playing the guitar and the harmonica, but his music choices are always spot-on for the event in which he's performing. 5 solid stars! Highly recommended!!!

Derek has a unique teaching style. He teaches to the individual student. My daughter has responded with enthusiasm and was playing with a band on stage within months after starting with Derek. She enjoys the relaxed atmosphere and the ability to play individually or with others.

I have been working with William for about three years and he always goes above and beyond my expectations. He is very creative when playing music he only has chord charts for and always makes the music sound AMAZING (most times better than the original) even if he doesn't really know how it goes. He is very talented, very patient and always very kind.

I am now a three time best selling author. I had a book singing party on july 30th 2016. When I tell you this band got down. I mean they were perfect. On time and very professional. I don't think I could have found a better band. I will hire this woman and her band a thousand time over again and I look forward to having them at my next book signing event. I love them. They are now my family. I would recommend them to any and everyone. So friendly and witty. Book them now. You will not regret it. My name is Author Mario Lattimore by the way

I hired David and his band for a birthday party, and it was awesome. We were on our feet all night. The playlist went from old school r&b to light rock with everything else in between. We gave requests and they were added to the set. The band was professional but fun. I loved that they kept the crowd involved. I'm sure I'll use David again, and I've referred to several people. You wont be disappointed!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
