Hassan finished a partial installation that I had for a HVAC heat pump. He was very quick and prompt in contacting me, and in providing an estimate. When he discovered additional work was needed than what we had discussed during the initial phone call, he was upfront in communicating what is needed and the cost. I was very happy with his professional approach.

Ross came in rescue when the blower fan in my AC stopped. Ross has a methodical troubleshooting skill, he quickly pointed out the faulty part which triggered a fuse being blown. He also identified an installation leakage by Sears that is unnoticed for years. His price is fair and his qualities are high. If you are reading this comment, I encourage you book Ross immediately.

We had a furnace that would only blow warm air for 10-15 min at a time. If course this took place during the coldest weekend of the winter. Buck responded to my request immediately. He arrived at my home within an hour of contacting him. After they reviewed and tested my system they determined that it was a clogged condensation reservoir. After cleaning it the problem was resolved. Great service! Great value!

My rating is "VERY GOOD". Does this fall between good & outstanding? Old tub, toilet, vinyl surround, & ceramic tile surround were pulled out of my very small bathroom. They installed new plumbing, backerboard & the an air jet tub. Not realizing that they are more difficult, I chose small tiles. Gary did a great job installing the tile. Job was held up while we found condo bldg. water shut off. Some unexpected problems occurred, which is expected in any remodel job. I will rate some parts of this job as "good," as some faucet parts were lost & faucet had to go out & pick out & buy a new faucet. As far as what could have been done better - closer supervision of a worker with some personal problems, but the overall RESPONSE to the problems was EXCELLENT. Mr. Wilkins stayed in touch throughout the job. Gary worked very late to get all the tile in, grouted, & cleaned. The whole job took one week. I am very happy with the results.

Emanuel has been absolutely fantastic! He re-wired our entire basement, installed a new electrical panel, and replaced our entire HVAC system. Of all of the contractors we have hired for our home remodel Emanuel has hands down been the most reliable, honest, and hard working. We plan to recommend him to everyone we know!!

Chris was nothing short of amazing with everything on our small job. We needed a quick roof repair where some shingles slid down and hit the ground off our pool bath roof. He assessed the situation and had it fixed in no time. He even took the time to show me why it happened due to improper installation from when the roof was put on 10 years ago. I will rehire him in a heartbeat for anything we need going forward.

They arrived at exactly the appointed time. They replaced my overflow pump for my air conditioner and then told me why it burnt out. The reason was someone installed 3/8 instead of 1/2 flow tubing for the water to flow out. The smaller tube made the pump work harder. They gave me a price to replace the tube and even though it took 4 hours instead the one hour they thought, they did not charge for the overtime. These guys are great and did not try and rip me off. Great prices and very courtesy. They are the best. I normally do not write reviews but with these guys, I had!!

Brian did a great job replacing my old furnace and a/c. I requested quotes on different brands and types, which he gave me the cost breakdown and I chose from there. He was able to install the system on a weekend before my out of town trip. Thanks!

Mr. Gary was great! From the very first meeting, he was very professional. He took his time evaluating our home so that he could make the best recommendation for a new HVAC system. The actual installation process went pretty smoothly. I appreciate that he was always on time and he did what he said he would do. I also appreciated that we were involved in the process and were treated as educated consumers. We will be using Polar Tropic Services for years to come. We highly recommend them!

We had an existing over-the-range microwave replaced with a hood that needed to be vented to the outside of the home. We purchased most of the materials ahead of their arrival. Ed and team were great throughout the removal and installation of the new hood and the venting of it to the outside. They were personable, respectful and experienced with this kind of work. They also ensured that the gas line and electric would not be compromised in the installation process. Ed was very generous in offering advice and service for our aging HVAC compressor unit. I recommend them for this type of job and for any HVAC needs as well. Unbeatable value. Thank you!

I like this guy! Seems trustworthy. Very prompt and professional. Fair price. I was super hungover and wasn’t awake. He waited for me for 45 mins. He did a great job. There were technical difficulties because it wasn’t a typical install. He didn’t rush off. He stayed until everything was perfectly situated and I was happy. Great guy! :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
