Felipe painted several ceilings in our home that had some water damage. His work is high quality and he gave me a fair price. I'll also mention that he was very easy to work with. He showed up on the agreed upon times and was easy to get in touch with. I would definitely recommend Felipe's services to friends and family.

Kerry Greaves was very responsive and professional. He did what he promised, and over delivered in my opinion! He fixed our antique chair, ottoman and sofa with care for the delicate fabric and carved wood, replaced the cushion material and springs and took painstaking effort to retain the existing fabric to give the furniture new life. It looks better that it did by far, and feels supportive and new! Kerry delivered the pieces back to us personally and made sure we were happy with their work. We will definitely use them in the future.

Charity was the least expensive of six quotes I received and it was very easy to negotiate my contract with Bobby as he was understanding and knowledgeable. Ultimately, we added several features at my request. Most important to me, Bobby agreed to allow me some sweat equity for credit to fit my budget. We arranged an agreeable time two weeks out, but Charity was able to reschedule at my convenience for an earlier time. I hired Charity to do three jobs: refinish my hard wood floors, install new carpet and install hardwood floor in a walk-in closet. Refinishing the hardwood floors in my kitchen, dining and living room, required three days due to the drying time for multiple coats of stain. Bobby and his crew worked diligently to complete work in the shortest time possible. Throughout the process, Bobby was very responsive to my phone calls and texts, as well as being very pleasant to work with. My floors turned out exactly as I wanted them. The carpet was installed in three bedrooms and a hallway a couple days later. The carpet was of better quality than the one I had initially selected, at no additional charge, and looks beautiful. My walk-in closet floor was installed the day after the carpet. I call it my small dance floor. Bobby Steele and Charity are definitely go-to people should you ever need flooring services in the future. They are attentive, courteous and professional. They are a home run in value.

We've had our floors done twice by Flooring Zone. They are a great value - no other company could match their prices, and the flooring products are great. I'd give them 5 stars except that both times we've had them do work for us, there was a problem or two. This time when we used them, everything was great except that for some reason the project manager sent them out with white quarter round to go with our cherry-wood laminate floor, which was being installed in a room with cherry-wood base boards (as you can see in the attached photo). The installers didn't even ask if that's what we wanted, but just started installing it. They were halfway done by the time I noticed, and then they had to pull it all out and run to Home Depot to get quarter-round that matched. Doing so put them behind schedule, causing us to be late for an event that evening. But when they were done, the floors looked fantastic. The floors were installed a couple months ago, and we're very happy with them. The first time we used Flooring Zone (my review is one of the 2-star reviews), we had some trouble. However, after leaving a negative review, Chris contacted me and they got everything taken care of to our satisfaction. Unfortunately, Thumbtack would not let me update the review or I would have. Bottom line - Flooring Zone is a great value, and if you have any problems, they'll make sure you're satisfied with the final product.

Anthony and his crew helped get our 1930's West End home, healthy again. We had some concealed water damage in our basement. With concerns of mold and rotten wood, Sick Building group completely demoed out our basement and removed all of the mold. I'm very happy with the end result. Thank you! I highly recommend giving this company a chance to bid on your needs, I don't think you'll find a better price.

Alan fixed our wood fence today--one day after I advertised for someone. I was SUPER pleased with the job. The cost was very reasonable. He appears very honest, pleasant, experienced in all areas of repairs and we have comfortably hired him to paint, repair a hole and crack in our ceiling and pressure wash. I have no doubt that if I find something else he will be able to fix that, too! He is a keeper!

Rafael and his team did an excellent job! This creature was very fast and did amazing work. I would definitely refer him to others as well as have him do other projects for me in the future if needed. While he was here I also have him install a track system in my closet which he did for a very reasonable price. I appreciate that he was honest with me in terms of letting me know what he felt comfortable doing. I had 2-65" inch televisions that I wanted secured to the wall using an articulating wall mount. My apartment has metal studs instead of wood studs and we were told we could not drill into the metal studs. Rafael let me know that he didn't feel comfortable doing the installation due to stability issues that could arise. He could have just charged me toinstall them and let me deal with the problems it could have created later on but instead he chose to be honest with me. He does a bit of everything so if you need work done I would definitely give him a call.

I've hired Kevin to do repairs on my house a couple of times. He repaired damage from a tree hitting my house, replaced the gutter and soffit, shingles, etc. Also replaced a bay window and repaired rotted wood around my front door. I've found his work to be professional and prices to be fair and will call him next time I need that type of work done.

Chrissie was referred to us by a friend, and that was one fortunate referral for us! Besides being a lovely person who is a joy to have in our home, she is an amazingly versatile and talented artist; we've used her four times already! She has refreshed our living room by fauxing a wood and tile fireplace and the flanking bookcases; she has textured the walls of our main-floor powder room, creating a unique space; she has made two hand-painted floor cloths for our kitchen; and she undertook the huge project of transforming a suite of dining room furniture -- dining table with two leaves, six chairs, a sideboard and a tea cart -- from a 1950s dull walnut finish to a gorgeous, marbled black-and-white finish that is one-of-a-kind. Chrissie even painstakingly made the marblizing flow across the leaves so that the table top looks like one piece whether or not the leaves are in!

Fernando and his team did such an amazing job on our barn door installation and floating shelves. The door makes our space functional now and the shelves are a statement piece in our family room. He was able to match the shelves exactly to the existing wood beams on our ceiling. He is such a perfectionist and takes pride in doing a great job. I’ve never worked with anyone as detailed oriented. I know I never have to worry about being 100% satisfied with the finished product. We loved his work so much we’re already lining up a few more projects to address this year.

Where do I start, Alex did so much on my renovation project. I recently purchased a home and wanted coffered ceilings added to the kitchen, basement and living room...I sent pictures to Alex and asked if he could do it. He said, YES I CAN! And yes he did, he not only did extensive trim molding but took up all the carpet on the second floor added hardwood flooring and to top it all off he completed a bathroom tile renovation for me as well. He added a wood tile to my fireplace it is absolutely "breath taking" and backsplash to my kitchen. He can do it ALL!!! If you hire him you won't be disappointed!!! Excellent Work!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
