I needed the work done and he showed up to do it unlike many other contractors today. Very Courteous. He also went the extra mile! I felt the price was decent. I would had liked it to be a little lower but bc I was so pleased with his mannerisms and work ethics and the quality I could not complain! would hire him again!! I do not wish for me name to be known instead you can use my initials- PS

Anthony Dentala and his team at Sick Building Group handled both water and mold remediation in my crawlspace, both bathrooms, and kitchen. They did an excellent job! Anthony worked closely with my home insurance company, which made dealing with this issue so much easier. All inspectors and contractors who have been in my home and crawlspace have stated he did a great job - best they had seen! Everyone, including me, has been most impressed! I just had my first one year inspection by Anthony (the mold remediation work and crawl space set up has a 10 year warranty with annual inspections (much like an annual termite renewal policy) - another reason I chose Anthony for the job. I highly recommend his company to anyone who has water and/or mold remediation to take care of or is in need of crawlspace remediation. I can't thank him enough for the awesome job he did and for giving me the comfort of knowing we now live in a mold-free home!!

Installed electrical wiring and switch for new garbage disposal install. Relocated 5 electrical switches in a kitchen wall and troubleshooted obstacles and fixed/improved previous poor and potentially dangerous wiring install in walls and attic. Very professional, thorough, knowledgeable honest and fair pricing. We were impressed and will call again soon for electrical and handyman needs. Thanks again to L&L Contractors!

Nate was the only contractor who responded when we reported hail damage to our roof. He made three visits to our home to assess and consult on our hail damage before we even signed a contract. He exceeded our expectations when it came to calling on behalf of our insurance company and sending information and communicating with them. The job was scheduled on time with a project timeline. Great guy to handle your home project and would recommend anytime.

Our experience overall with this company was outstanding! The contractor was on time with his estimate did not overcharge and actually was way more professional than any other company I have had to deal with in the past for my other projects. Dan did an outstanding job taking what we thought was a complex and potentially impossible project and making it a reality. From the first site visit, he not only envisioned it a possibility, he made it happen. Our home had an unfinished and unused bonus room upstairs next to attic space that was not reachable except through a hole in a closet. Many other contractors told us it was not possible, and if it was, the options were not reasonable or very expensive. Dan saw the potential, he made it happen and created over 800 sq ft of livable space for us upstairs. Dan’s professionalism and integrity is without question a breath of fresh air. His team was very friendly and professional the quality of the work speaks to Dan’s leadership and experience. We are very happy with our new space and we will be working with Dan again on other future projects. We highly recommend Dan and Projects Unlimited!

Mr. Hilliker did an excellent job on my kitchen remodel. He encouraged me to do my own demolition and preparations though had no problem doing them on his own. He was on time and was very professional and personable in appearance and manner. He completed the project in a timely manner and kept me abreast of his progress throughout the process. He adjusted smoothly to any changes I decided upon throughout the project. I would absolutely recommend and use his services on future projects.

Brent was great to work with! He was prompt with his on-line response, he was on time to evaluate the project, is very knowledgeable about the siding/trim replacement, and gave me a verbal quote before he left. After hiring him for the project, he and his crew arrived on-time every morning, and typically worked into the evenings to complete the job on schedule. He is a hands-on owner, with attention to detail, and works side by side with his crew. You can count on him to be on-site, and personally manage the quality of the work. I’ve hired several contractors throughout the years, and right now, I have a hard time thinking of any that were better to work with than Brent. Definitely two 👍 👍!

Sean is a very polite and professional contractor. When he came by my place to give me a quote he didn't try to dazzle me with videos and samples of product, instead he dazzled me with his straight honesty and recommendations as to what I needed. Sean is courteous, punctual and clean. He arrived at 8am and worked till late in the day. Sean took the time to do everything right and my neighbors saw the beautiful work that he has done and now they have contracted him for services. It is without reservation that I would highly recommend Sean (SCG Home Improvement) for any home improvement and I guarantee you will be a satisfied customer as I am with his work.

I highly recommend Ric Rodriguez who owns Portico South (404-274-7377). Ric has done quite a number of jobs for me including a large kitchen remodeling project and two bathrooms. He’s a pleasure to deal with—extremely professional, polite and knowledgeable—and the quality of his and his subcontractors’ work is excellent. He can do all types of work but he especially likes to do kitchens and baths.

I hired Atlanta Construction Company on the recommendation of one of my neighbors who had them rebuild a deck for their high-rise condominium. Six months earlier I had hired a contractor to do renovations on my home, a project that was originally supposed to be done in 8 days. The previous contractor dropped off the face of the earth leaving projects unfinished or of poor quality. Skye Kincaid, the owner, and his chief contractor, Nestor, evaluated my projects and gave a fair quote breaking down both cost and labor. The work included painting and priming a bathroom, repairing drywall, custom fitting thresholds, installing, repairing and painting molding, sanding and repainting a shoddy paint job elsewhere in my home. They also solved a big headache installing automatic drawer slides and drawer fronts on my kitchen cabinet drawers. (The previous contractor didn't measure properly and the drawers were too close to open without removing the drawer fronts.) I am beyond happy with the end result. Nestor is a skilled craftsman, meticulous and precise. I'm especially satisfied with the custom fit of the molding. Best of all, the bulk of the projects were completed on one day. The drawer project was scheduled for second day pending shipment of the custom drawer fronts and slides. I finally can enjoy and have pride in my home. I only wish I had discovered Atlanta Construction before I embarked on my previous renovations. I will definitely call them fwhen I plan additional renovations.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
