We were in a bind when we found damaged and unfinished brick hiding behind the trim of the front door we were replacing. Jose immediately contacted us with an extremely reasonable quote. He was onsite the next day to start the job - the work was completed that evening. Everything looks great and the newly installed steel lintel was a major bonus - I'd highly recommend him for brick repair work!

The Art of Home Improvement replaced the roof on our house in Rome. We are completely happy and very satisfied with our new roof, all the way around – quality of workmanship, materials, labor, value, communication, thoroughness, and care and clean-up of our property. Ray's bid was based on data that he used that is specific to our older home. His bid was accurate, thorough and fair. Very professional! When Ray and I met early on to first discuss the roof replacement, he offered many options concerning construction and shingle types. He explained up front what the entire job would entail from beginning to end. Our home is in the historic district, and is nearly 80 years old. Ray updated the old venting system with new ridge vents, which will lower heating and cooling bills, new drip edge and new flashing all around. Ray left shingle samples with us, and we were able to hold the sample up to our cedar shingle siding, in order to choose the right color shingle. We were considering a light color which would not have looked good on our home at all, but when we were able to compare a sample next to our siding, we realized how a darker, slate color was the perfect choice. It looks great! Ray kept in contact with us prior to beginning the job. If I had a question or concern, Ray returned my calls or emails promptly. He made it clear that he is available anytime if I have a concern following completion. All is good. The crew was great! All are very nice young people. I have done some roofing in my younger days, and I can they know what they are doing. Ray and his crew worked hard, non-stop, all day to complete the job. They covered the driveway, our plants and shrubs and our deck with tarps to protect them. No plant was damaged, and our deck looks as good as always. Clean up was extremely thorough. They cleaned the gutters, swept up and picked up any small shingle materials, and then they used magnets and a magnetic roller to pick up stray roofing nails that may have missed the tarps. We have had no nail issues. Ray even left a large magnet wand with us, so that when the dumpster was hauled away the following morning, I could use it to pick up nails and metal debris that may have been under the dumpster, or had fallen out when they winched the dumpster up to the truck. Ray is a nice man, and it was a pleasure to do business with The Art of Home Improvement. Ray was on time with each and every appointment, start time and completion time that he gave us. Ray returned each and every communication with us in a very timely manner. The Art of Home Improvement’s customer service is top notch! We love our new roof! Our house looks great!! The quality of construction, the warranties for construction and materials, and the pleasant experience we had working with Ray and The Art of Home Improvement are all 5 star!! If you are looking for a good roofing company, which is friendly, reliable, does great work at a great price, and keeps its commitments, then I would not hesitate to choose The Art of Home Improvement for the job. Thank you.

I work for a film production company and our equipment damaged the driveway of one of our filmed locations - needless to say the location owner wasn't happy. Kenny and Ask Asphalt were able to take a look at the damage that day, give me a firm estimate, and complete the work that week. Problem solved. Thanks Ask Asphalt!

Outstanding experience. My husband was in commercial construction his entire life before becoming disabled, and he watched every stage of the driveway replacement. He was immediately and continually convinced that Alex Guerrero and his crew are highly qualified and they produced excellent results for us on our property in Sidney on Lanier Subdivision in Gainesville. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality concrete work!

I couldn’t have been any happier with assessment, communication, work and end result. We had to replace a sewer line which unfortunately required part of our driveway to be torn up. After stopping by to provide a quote and start date, he organized the concrete and timeline to fit our schedule. I watched this “concrete artist” piece our driveway back together to perfection. Highly recommended and will use again.

Dan gave us a fair price for our project. We were so impressed with his punctuality, professionalism, and flexibility that we hired him for 5 others projects within the first week of the barn project. I have recommended him to several friends and family members looking for projects to be completed around their homes. Dan and his crew have become our "go to" team. They are the best. The inspector said the framing on the barn was the best he had ever seen. The barn will outlive us! HIRE DAN for your projects. He is the best. He does everything, building, fencing, gutters, etc. CALL HIM!

For years our house had the saddest looking landscaping in the neighborhood. This came from years of having my teenage sons cut the lawn and trim the bushes. Then moved out on their own, and my lawn fell into a state of disrepair because the landscaping now depended on me. After years of neglect, it took only one call to Hearn Landscaping, and now I have the best looking front yard, back yard, and sides in the neighborhood. Sam Hearn is extremely creative with landscaping design, and his crew is very dedicated and hard working. The results is a great looking yard that you will be proud of, and wave at your neighbors with pride as the drive by. Not only was I very impressed with the service, but Sam did an outstanding job of quoting the work before I began, and worked with me to adjust the effort to fit within my budget. Now, even I have a big smile on my face when I pull in my driveway!!

I used ADC on several home improvement projects. He applied custom coatings to my old cracked and weathered cement garage floor. It was absolutely beautiful. I used his company again to redo my front walkway and repair concrete cracks in my driveway. It turned out great. I just recently used his company to reconstruct my patio. I couldn't be happier with this company. They are Dependable, affordable, honest, quality work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
