Working with Leafy Lawns was a pleasure! Aaron is very friendly, explains everything well (to a landscape iliterate), his price was very competitive and he checked up on us/the lawn for several days afterwards. Our front lawn has been an eyesore for years so I can't even believe the lawn I see now is ours. We had about 2000sq ft of weeds, dirt, old Bermuda and mulch that Aaron removed, then tilled, and leveled. He installed about 3.5 pallets Zoysia Zenith from SuperSod nearby. By the second day, it was already starting to turn green! Our lot has a considerable hill, so with excess sod, Aaron laid grass on the 6x6 timber steps we have, so now they too are attractive and not 100% mud. In addition to this, he planted and mulched azaleas at my mailbox to tie it all together and dropped off a new sprinkler! Aaron is a genuinely nice man. He made it easy with our work schedules to schedule an estimate and the work ASAP, but most importantly he was upfront about details and when they encountered an unexpected increase in materials, he did not add to his quote. The attention and concern he gives to each job, no matter the size, is why he is so successful. Following our sod installation, part of Aaron's crew came back for a total yard clean up...killing weeds, hauling leaves and laying pine straw. They work hard and it shows. This is the first time in 5 years my husband and I have stood in the driveway and been proud of our front yard! Thank you Leafy Lawns!

Overall I was satisfied with the work performed. They cleaned up behind themselves, they cut the branches to length and carted them to the curb for pick up. I was a little disappointed with their lack of communication. Unfortunately DJ&Gray had a bit of misfortune the week prior to the estimate and a day before the day of the job. Stuff happens... I get it and most folks will to if you just remember to communicate enough with the client what the impending issues might be. Punctuality is another critique I would mention needs improvement. I would hire them again, in fact I am considering them for a landscaping job. Everyone needs another chance.

We added a pool to our back yard and had no idea how to handle the landscape design. Steve came over and gave us a great design that was effective and yet fit our budget. He was very helpful through the process and even made adjustments as we progressed through the project. My wife and I are thrilled with the results and I would encourage anyone looking for good landscape design and install to use Steve and Georgia Natural Scapes.

Nelson offered the most visionary and comprehensive proposal from the beginning to let us see what he would do, not just a quote. While at the same time, he was open to incorporating our modifications. The scope was large and got larger, requiring several serious mid-course negotiations. But the result was spectacular, including a water bowl feature, paver patio, stone/stucco wall, and grass/shrubs/trees – all accented with landscape lighting. On the down side, the electrical, drainage, irrigation, and lighting (mostly done by subcontractors) had to be reworked and I did not like having to argue over me absorbing extra costs. The end result though is a stunning showcase for us now and we would highly recommend Nelson.

Justin and his crew installed a creek bed in my backyard to help with drainage issues. They were great to work with. Showed up on time and completed this phase of the project when promised. I would definitely use this landscaper again for future projects.

C&H is both our full-service landscape maintenance company and also who we used to completely redesign and re-landscape our front yard. They have been absolutely exceptional in both. As far as landscape maintenance, it is wonderful to have one company that does absolutely everything to keep our yard looking great. They are reliable and detail oriented, many times noticing and fixing or adjusting things we did not. I also find their services reasonably priced for the amount of time and attention they give to our yard. As a landscape design and installation provider, they have transformed the front yard and it nearly looks like a different house. They provide great advice and are very thoughtful about what to plant, where, and why. We've learned a ton from them. They also have been very responsive to our many requests and tweaks and continue to show great care for the yard. They are quite simply the best landscape company I've ever worked with and well worth the money.

John and his team absolutely delivered on the project and exceeded our expectations!! Began the project with a fairly ambiguous and amorphous scope but a super tight deadline. Despite many design changes on our end, John and his team delivered the project exactly on time and with complete quality and attention to detail. If you are looking for a highly qualified, responsible, reasonable, capable and reliable landscape architect, look no further than Southern Cross Outdoors!

Excellent work, dependable. Great communication. Professional. I'm very pleased with the work of, and communication with, Joe Hedgepeth of Hedgepeth Landscaping & Pressure Washing. I've had multiple properties serviced multiple times and always pleased with the landscaping work and pressure washing. What a delightful experience it has been ! The owner, is a very kind gentleman who always does his very very best when taking care of our yard. Twice each month he and his associates arrive at our home and perform a stellar job. Jose has a very positive attitude… And I always appreciate when he makes suggestions about what our lawn might need; I.e. Spreading additional straw, and installing new shrubs in spring and fall, et cetera. Mr. Jose always has a positive attitude, and my family certainly appreciates how lovely our yard looks after he has stopped by. I would encourage anyone looking for an experienced landscaper, a gentleman with a very positive attitude, and an honest man who keeps his word -- to give this landscaper a call -- he has been a blessing to us. 🌿😊

Very happy with Tony's support on the business end and David's on the actual landscaping end. We started with general support I was looking for, then worked out a reasonable maintenance plan. His pricing is very fair, too. I expect to use them for additional maintenance needs I'll have this fall.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
