We just moved into our new townhome and it became overwhelming! Our new washer/dryer was delayed and we've been traveling - so laundry really backed up! I have to say that it took a long time, but the cleaning was so thorough, caring and done just as I wanted - so I don't care. During the cleaning, they were even able to complete and put away 3 loads of laundry (which take an hour each in the machines.) Lastly, they did a lot of organizing for all of the little things we had scattered about (pens, cords, bills, coffee cups... lol) Floors are vacuumed & mopped. Bathrooms and kitchen are sparkling. Overall I've always been extremely happy with their service and I've hired them to come every 2 weeks from now on.

Carmelo, was a lifesaver. One contractor canceled on me two days in a row. Carmelo came at the last minute and took care of several projects. He fixed the drywall in the garage, installed a microwave and dishwasher, painted shoe mold in the kitchen and bathroom, and fixed two cabinets. He is very passionate about what he does. I will be calling him for future projects and recommending him to my family and friends. Thanks again Carmelo!

Both Jerry's were absolutely wonderful, or as I called them Jerry1 & Jerry2 They patched a whole in our drywall ceiling and painted and match up the ceiling texture just perfectly. They are a great team. They were there when they said they would be, they were very professional and honest. I would definitely refer them and use them again for all my household jobs I need repaired, as well as recommend them to others. Thanks Guys, The Alderman Family

Okei helped while our cleaner was on vacation and did a fabulous job. In fact he has become a household manager for our home which is in an esstate area and has been in charge of massive gardening project as well as check in and check outs for an Airbnb rental. He's very trustworthy and we can leave the keys and the entire home available as he is very honest and does not turn down any type of project. He did a gardening project for us for about one quarter of the estimate of another gardener.

Rod was very professional and arrived on time. He was very reasonable and worked with me to spread out my projects so that I could maximize the vision for my home at an affordable price. Rod cleaned up after each project before moving to the next and gave suggestions on how to maintain upkeep. Rod tackled projects in a day that I have been trying to get done for months. He came prepared and improvised when my fixtures did not come with all of the hardware. Not only did he do an exemplary job,but he fixed the botched jobs from when the home was first built. I have already scheduled him to come back for more projects. I would definitely recommend him for your household needs.

Was moving out of state and needed to get the final house clean done before I headed out. Since the bulk of my house was in storage I hired Golden Cleaners to come in the very late part of the day because the movers were scheduled for early morning to remove the rest of the household. They were very quick in there response and their price was very good. Because the movers were so slow I need to change the time for Golden Cleaners to arrive. Juliano was so nice and told me to just let them know when they needed to come and they would be there. After changing time, movers informed me that they were stopping for the day and would return tomorrow. Golden Cleaners arrived and even though there was stuff still in every room immediately got to work. When they were done I could not believe how well they had done the job having to move and work around boxes and furniture. Golden Cleaners is top notch and I highly recommend them for the impeccable service they offer. My 100+ year old house never looked better.

A few years ago I had Mr Handyman(James Dooley) remodel my bathroom as well as my kitchen. I loved it. Not only does James do all my household repairs and renovations, he also repairs my vehicles and is an excellent mechanic. And he still to this day does all my yard work. The last job, just 3 weeks ago he put a new roof on my house. I wanted shingles but he showed me all the good and bad points about shingles as well as metal . I decided to go with his recommendation and I am so glad I did . I love my Roof ! He even stayed under budget. I would recommend James for any project someone needs done. He's the best!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
