"Robin is amazing with medical massage techniques and restoring muscle use, recovering from injuries, and overall helping with my back and spine problems and arthritis. Today I got to experience a Salt Rub Massage which was incredible. Next we will be doing a Sugar Scrub Massage and Heat Wrap and then a Mud Wrap Experience in my private home. The fact that Robin has medical experience and expertise is reassuring because I suffer from ongoing back pain. Weekly massages have eliminated the need for expensive xrays and pain meds. Weekly treatments from Robin for 2 hours help me avoid all pain medications and I'm able to work full time now without any trouble. It is just a miracle that she has worked on my trigger points to release tension and pain. Thank you Robin for all your wonderful treatments to date! I highly recommend Robin as a private Massage Therapist for your individual needs."

"My experience with Keturah was amazing. I'd been experiencing a lot of soreness from my work outs and carry a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders. She was able to help break down the "lactic acid" as she taught me in my problem areas and even did some stretches on certain areas which helped my recovery time. She also checks on you a few days after your appointment to see how you're feeling which I really appreciated. I've been to come therapists where I've get like I was hit my a truck afterwards but with Keturah, I felt comfortable, relaxed, and well taken care of. I would recommend her to anyone that is seeking a well-trained massage therapist."

"Karen is an exceptional Massage Therapist that provides professional, expert, and unique techniques for improved physical activity. As an athlete herself, she is acutely aware of the issues that plaque individuals that combine work routines with daily workout routines. I personally suffer back and neck issues from my repetitive activities. Karen has been able to devise personalized therapy for me that relaxes my muscles thus allowing me to work and workout with much less pain. I highly recommend Karen. On top of being the best massage therapist, she is a genuinely nice person!"

"I received a one hour deep tissue massage. Greg and I went over possible problem areas before beginning and he went above and beyond with those. He added in some pressure point therapy and stretching along with the relaxing massage. By the end of the session I was completely relaxed and felt great. If I lived closer I would go back more often. Greg is a professional and is great at what he does. I would recommend him to family and friends. "

"Reiki with Love has truly been an uplifting and beneficial addition to my weekly routine. I have been able to clearly focus on various minor and major goals. These goals have continued my personal and professional development. LaShorn's ability to connect with me and nurture throughout my new experience with Reiki and meditation has been highly valuable. If not for that I might not have become as hooked as I am with my Reiki with Love appointments. They have become a fixture in my weekly schedule!! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
