I hired Payma Home Solutions to build our poolside pergola. I was about to order a pergola kit from an company online but it turns out that Jose and his crew built a custom pergola for the same price! It was larger and made out of cedar.... what a nice upgrade. He is very knowledgeable and prompt. His workmanship is outstanding. In will be using him again for all my home projects.... πŸ“ŒπŸ“ŒπŸ“ŒπŸ“ŒπŸ“Œ out of 5!!!

Building a wood scalloped 6ft privacy fence w/2 arbors over gates, clearing out brush, trimming low tree limbs, finishing off a pot filler faucet over stove. The crew was very accomodating to a few minor changes that i preferred such as moving the gates a few feet, trimming certain limbs, cutting scallop curves a certain way. The crew was courteous, respectful, on time, & took care of some yellow jacket nests i didnt know about. The job took longer than originally thought, but the crew stuck it out until it was completed & hustled in the heat. only criticism is a lack of direct communication of the original plan, owner's preferences, or discussing needs/changes on a daily basis. I had to initiate discussions. Fence & arbors look great! I had to knock a rating star off due to them not really being able to lock down a plumber to come finish off the pot filler faucet. One was supposed to come, but never showed for the appointment, so i ended up just securing a different plumber to do the job myself.

Dominion repaired and stained my old deck and regrouted my master shower. Keith and Lynne very professional. They returned calls, stayed in touch and arrived on time. They double checked to be sure there weren't miscomnunications. They took the time to hand-paint rather than spray the entire deck and pergola, choosing to get good coverage rather than save time. There was a very minor problem with the grout, and Keith came the next day to fix it. I have recommended them to friends and would not hesitate to use them again.

Mr. Toole was more than flexible with my terrible schedule and gave consideration to the customer's needs. Great work was done and even to the point of going beyond and adjusting the placement of my Pergola to exactly where I wanted it. Overall, my wife and I were and are more than pleased with the finished product.

I hired him for two different projects. I had build a pergola out of cedar for my back patio that I absolutely love. A few months later I hired him to tile my laundry room. Both turned out so great that I've recommended him to all my friends.

Hi Folks - My wife & I picked BIC Contracting after a careful review of several local contractors, prior customer reviews and their estimated costs. Our projects were all external to our home. BIC replaced a rotting chimney chase with equivalent Hardy Plank equivalents with PVC trim boards. We no longer use the chimney for fire, so we had BIC turn the chimney space into a mini-tool shed. BIC added a cement patio to our home rear door with a wood pergola with a clear, rainproof acrylic roof. And that rotting rear door was replaced by a new french-style double door. Additional work was performed on some rotting fascia & eves, and replacement of security lighting. All this work was completed in a timely and professional manner. It became obvious that BIC take pride in their workmanship as we observed their progress. BIC took care to remove debris daily and worked their estimated schedule except for one day where they had to perform an emergency repair for another client. That did not impact our flexible schedule. If I had the same emergency, I would hope to get the same attention from BIC. We would not hesitate to use BIC on future projects, inside or outside the home. You may contact me is you have further questions. Home owner: Frank Rowan, Oakwood, GA. 770-713-1951 (cell)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture β€” such as tables, beds and dressers β€” out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter β€” although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
