Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

We have used Flooring Zone during our total home remodel over the past year. They have installed everything from travertine, porcelain, laminate and hardwood to custom glass tile in our showers and kitchen. During our renovation we had two high profile Contractors managing separate projects which included some of the tile work. Flooring Zone was called in on both projects to take over the tile work due to their level of skill and expertise. Their staff is dedicated, hard-working, professional and reliable. After comparing their pricing with competitor products and services, we found that Flooring Zone was the most fair and transparent. They arrived on time and stay with our projects through successful completion. Miles would even drop by my office to deliver samples for us to consider. Having recently hired so many Contractors, Flooring Zone was a refreshing experience. We are bringing them back in shortly to finish the last rooms of our renovation. When it comes to Miles and the Flooring Zone, we just keep calling them back because I know we will get a great outcome. I highly recommend calling Flooring Zone first or at least include them before making a flooring or tiling decision. You can reach Miles DuChanois, Installation Manager/Sales, Flooring Zone at C:678-768-6090, O:855-344-ZONE.

SourceOne did a great job on our Travertine floors and marble countertops. We totally gutted our master bathroom shower and retiled with marble. Rather than replacing the floor and countertops with new, we opted to restore them. So glad we did. Now the bathroom ALL looks new. SourceOne is very conscientious/meticulous to details and pleasant. The floors actually look better now than when they were first installed 10 years ago! Also, the cost to do the job was far less than replacing tile and counters. Source One's prices are good too.

I just moved into a condo and Seattle and needed to have two bathrooms, a bedroom, and an entryway painted - both walls and ceilings. Alan was by far the most reasonable price and in line with what I can come to expect from living on the East Coast prior to Seattle. A number of other quotes local painters that operate in the Seattle where ridiculous in comparison. I was not very well versed in painting and materials, so Alan was able to talk me through the options for paint types and recommendations. Alan showed up on time the day of work and displayed consistent communication via text messages. The project took three days to complete. The first day Alan completed the priming - the entry way and one bathroom on the second - and the final bathroom and bedroom on the third. I spent portion of the first day on site and felt comfortable enough to have my girlfriend oversee the work the remainder of the week. Alan is a very personable individual and easy to work with. The only area of improvement that I would note is that there are a few areas of trim and edging between the ceiling a walls that could have been a little neater or sharper. It did not take much time to touchup, so there were no major concerns. Overall, Alan was easy to work with, his price was far more reasonable than his competitors, and he completed the work in a timely manner.

Where do I start? I'll start by saying I originally hired another contractor on Thumbtack to install porcelain tile in our master bathroom and it was the worse experience I've had. I hired Leo to fix the mess the other contractor left and I will say I'm 100% satisfied. Leo did more in two days than the previous contractor did in a week. They first came in and laid out paper on my downstairs hardwood floors and stairs to avoid stains. Then they laid out plastic on my upstairs carpet and other furniture to avoid getting dust all over everything. True professionalism! The final product came out better than I expected. After completion of the job, they cleaned up all of the material and got rid of all of the excess waste. We were so pleased with the job, we asked for quotes on other projects that we want to get done. I will definitely be hiring Leo for all of my home improvement projects. And trust me, there are many!

Paulo was very responsive and able to accommodate our schedule and quick turnaround request. He had to rebuild/repair the walls behind where our old tile had been and put up the new Carrera marble tile we had picked out. He was very patient with any changes we requested (i.e. shifting the layout of some of the tiles that might appear too similar, and wanting to adjust the grout width). Paulo was professional, worked quickly, came on Saturday morning to finish the job to fit our schedule, and we have gotten a ton of compliments on his work!

Eduardo was great, we called him on a Saturday and he came on Sunday. He was very nice and got us a great deal on marble and installation for our bar. He hung our cabinets perfectly and explained that if I had known about him sooner, he could have gotten me higher end cabinets for the same price or less, than what I paid at Home Depot. And so I recommend that you call him first, before planning your project. You won't be disappointed.

Tom tiled three bathrooms, one laundry room and replaced my old back splash in my kitchen. He did outstanding work! He had to custom cut every singel tile for the backsplash - 60 square feet of tile. He really improved the appearance of our kitchen. He also remodeled our guest bathroom. He was going to tear out the existing outdated tile shower. However, since the shower was in such good shape, he recommended keeping it and just tile the floor and stoop of the shower. He painted the bathroom with two colors that tiled it all together. In addition, he installed bead board and trimmed it out. Excellent wood worker and painter too. I would highly recommend him!

I just had my kitchen & bathroom floors done by Atl Surfaces. They did a fantastic job. The guys are true professionals. I had some fancy 18 x 18 porcelein tiles and I wanted them laid in a diagonal pattern in the kitchen. A lot of contractors turned me down because of the many special cuts and intense labor involved. The owner of Atl Surfaces, Charles took the challenge, and the rest is history. He and his team performed flawlessly beyond our expectations. The kitchen & bathroom look exquisite. My wife and I are extremely happy and we would recommend Atl Surfaces any day to anyone looking to do a flooring project. They are the best! Thank you Atl Surfaces for a job well done. John Roberts

The shower pan failed in my master bath tile shower causing water damage through the subfloor. Cavinbuilt handled the entire repair / remodel to include negotiating with my homeowners insurance. Entire shower and all tile removed and rebuilt the right way. Outcome is fantastic. Great company and people to work with.

Chad saved the day! He turned horrible and very expensive tile work done in two baths by previous contractors into very nice looking finished baths at a very reasonable price. If you need tile work done, Chad and his partner are the people to hire. Outstanding workmanship and professionalism! Only wish I would have hired him and his partner first. Could have saved myself the thousands of dollars spent for poor workmanship by prior contractors and a lot of stress and time. Drew Gierman Conyers, Georgia

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
