Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

We are so glad we hired Felipe to fix the water damaged drywall on our kitchen ceiling. He patched two large areas and you can't even tell where the repairs were done. It is so seamless and smooth and blends in perfect with the rest of the ceiling. He also repainted the entire ceiling. Felipe gave us a very reasonable price, always was on time and easy to communicate with. He was very professional and knowledgeable, his work was excellent and it was a pleasure working with him. He truly takes pride in his work. I would highly recommend him.

The new tile floor is great! There were some issues with the existing subfloor that were addressed very well. This change ultimately added a good chunk of time to the overall job (the job was to take 5 days but took 6 or 7) but the final product is wonderful. Adding radiant flooring to the kitchen was also a huge plus. Overall, great work at a very fair price. I'd definitely have them do more work in the future.

I wanted a shower rod permanently installed in my bathroom. He came out before 8 a.m and did just that! No cracking of the tile and the whole job may have taken 30 min. Would definitely use him again.

For months I had been searching for the perfect contractor to fix my bathroom situation; the floor of my 70sq ft bathroom needed to be re-tiled due to water damage from a leaking pipe behind the wall, and I suspected I had a leaking shower pan as well. Some people wanted way too much money, while others were only interested in a job in the $10k-$20k range. Some contractors never returned my calls, while others came to look at the project to prepare a quote, but I never heard from them again (ahem, Moda). That's when I turned to Thumbtack and found Orange Cat Flooring - now my problem is solved. Christian responded to my Thumbtack inquiry right away with a quote that was more than reasonable. He came the next day to look at the job, which at the time was just to re-tile the floor (crossing fingers that the shower pan was alright). All was going according to plan. Christian was responsive, polite and very professional. A fresh change of pace compared to what I had been dealing with from other contractors. All in all, I was "feeling good", which is important. Always trust your instincts The morning of the job the tile was removed from the bathroom floor and my concern about the shower pan became a reality. Christian and I discussed a change in course for the project; we needed to install a new shower pan and then move on to the floor to re-tile. Christian's favorite phrase while working on this job was "no problem". Both Christian and his crew member, Jefferey (who was also professional, polite and a great worker) hopped into the truck and headed to Home Depot to get the supplies needed for a new shower pan. Altogether I got a new shower pan, new tile on the bathroom floor, and they cleaned up the grout inside the shower. Now, I can honestly say that I have the best bathroom in my building. I'm sure others in my condo will be having bathroom envy :) I give these guys two thumbs up - way up, for the amazing service they have provided. This has turned out way better than I ever would have imagined. Thanks again fellas. I'll make sure to give you a ring in the future when the need for more floor or tile work arrises.

Fernando and his crew worked with us to prepare our house for sale. They did a great job preparing and painting garage walls and floor, master bath and closet, stripping and staining the banister and staining our decks. Fernando was available to work around our schedule as needed. We felt his rates were very reasonable and would use his services again.

Floors & Maintenance did a fantastic job refinishing my hardwood floors. Fabio and team sanded and refinished about 1400 SF of hardwoods in my home. The process was explained to me upfront and I was informed each day what would happen next. The service included moving my furniture out/ back in. Fabio went above and beyond by adding custom stained vent covers and replacing some rotting wood by a door. My cabinets and draperies were covered in plastic to help minimize the effect of the dust. The process took 6 days and I choose to stay in a hotel once the stain/poly was applied (fumes). My floor looks better now than it did when I moved in 18 years ago. Great Job! P.S. - I talked to 5 companies before selecting Fabio. I liked the fact that he didn't sell new floors and that his is a small family business. Good price too!

Sal and his small crew did a really good job refinishing our porch wood trims and 2-level deck. They are friendly and hardworking. The scope was beyond a typical one-tone deck and they were meticulous with staining the railings in particular. I wish the cleanup would have been better and the communication regarding price would have been more upfront and clear. It went up quite a bit as he realized additional coats were needed, but at the end we were able to easily come to an agreement. The finished deck is beautiful.

I have used many contractors throughout my life, but have never used one as good as Alex. He went above and beyond throughout the process of doing the work. The quality was great on the hardwood, tile and carpet install. The customer service was unbelievable. He response time was exceptionally fast anytime we had questions. What was really impressive was the fact that after a week of the install I noticed his subcontractor missed a few grout lines along the wall in the bathroom. I texted Alex about that and within 15 minutes he came over to my house at 7pm on a weekday and did the work himself.

We hired Neal to install laminate flooring and would highly recommend him. His price was extremely reasonable; as a matter of fact so much lower than the other quotes I had gotten that I was initially skeptical. But after reading the other reviews and speaking with Neal I hired him. And I'm definitely glad I did. Our subfloor was very uneven and difficult to work with but Neal was very conscientious about taking the time to do the job right. Our floors look great and I have already recommended him to a family member.

I had a fantastic experience with this company. They responded quickly and we set up the floor installation for the next day. The arrived right on time and were very professional throughout the process. They did a beautiful job laying vinyl plank flooring - there were variations in the planks (widths and color) and they did a fabulous job of mixing them around so the floor really looks like reclaimed wood. We had planned to install this flooring ourselves but It was well worth it to have the work (2 large bedrooms) completed in one day. The price was reasonable & I would definitely hire them again.

Caesar has helped us with our carpeting needs now for more than 5 years - all three floors of my house. He is friendly, knowledgeable and honest - a really nice person to work with. The installers are punctual, meticulous and were professional in the way they went about their work. They took extra care with the furniture and the house was always in great shape when they completed the work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
