A real pleasure to work with Jontell. He was on time the same day we requested service. He was knowledgeable in handling some problems that cropped up during installation of our faucets and drain. He price was more than fair. I would definitely use him again. He does electrical, HVAC and carpentry.

Todd's crew demoed and built a new wall for me with closets in four long days. He underpromised and over-delivered. I need my home back before my family returned from a year abroad. They worked with two vintage doors, non-standard lighting, custom trim and framing without complaints. My 95 year old house has a ton of charter but not many right angles. But Shad, the mill worker handled it all with Grace and attention to detail. It came off better than I hoped. Would work with them in future.

Wow, let the photos speak! Sean and his crew of painters are professional, move fast, and have unbeatable pricing. My 2200sqft home interior was painted in 2 days. Team painted walls, ceilings, baseboards, and molding. As a first time homebuyer working with SnJ was mind easing because he doesn't mind sharing progression and status of the home improvement project.

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

excellent experience!!! As a first time home owner I was a bit nervous about getting stone worl done but they did the tuck-pointing job seamlessly. Communication was excellent, the work looks GREAT and the Mason was super friendly and informative. He even left me some extra mortar and told me how to use it in case I ever needed to do any minor work myslef. He even took a look at my garage door jamb and told me how I could cheaply fix the gap there. A company that doesn't try to nickle and dime you and is helpful AND sticks to their original quote is a gem. I will be using them for years to come for any work I need done.

Mr. Baynes has been a contractor for me for numerous projects in my home. The scope and nature of the project work included entire interior and exterior painting of a 6800 sq. ft. home, deck restoration and painting, siding replacement, new construction of sunroom, power washing of house exterior and driveways, new appliance installations, wall and ceiling replacement after major water damage, carpet installation, tile refinishing in the bath area, painting of exterior rod iron fence and gates and widow re-sealing and re-glazing. While home improvement projects are inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Mr. Baynes’s services as a contractor were invaluable, and I have been extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give Mr. Baynes top marks in the following areas: 1. Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently. Mr. Baynes was knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in his respective trades. He was conscientious about all of the project specifications, and his work product rarely needed improvement or revision. 2. Quality of work. Mr. Baynes was professional, reliable, courteous, and respectful of my property and privacy. He had an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. His pride in his work was evident. He tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found him to be trustworthy, and felt comfortable with allowing him access inside my home. 3. Project management and coordination. Mr. Baynes’s prior experience working in construction really paid off. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of my projects, and was able to plan, coordinate and manage the activities, effectively. 4. Integrity and professionalism. Throughout the projects, I was impressed with Mr. Baynes’s commitment to generating a top quality product, rather than maximizing his profit margin. 5. Effective communication. Mr. Baynes kept me closely informed of work schedules, delivery dates, and projected completion dates of different phases of the projects. His communication was always clear, informative, and helpful. 6. Flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with unexpected developments. When unforeseen problems surfaced (e.g., water damage behind a wall; he worked diligently with me to identify solutions that was acceptable to me. 7. Responsiveness to my needs and concerns. Mr. Baynes’s commitment to my satisfaction was evident in his actions. 8. Truth in advertising. In his proposal, Mr. Baynes gave a clear breakdown of costs for each facet of the projects. His contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized costs. When the project was completed, all the work was done as described and agreed upon, and there were no hidden costs, extra expenses or unpleasant surprises. As a homeowner and customer, I felt Ms. Baynes delivered exactly what he had promised, at the agreed upon price.

Jammie came in after another installer said he could not do the job (tried talking us into a more expense material). Jammie took a look and said "no problem". He fit us in to his schedule and finished the job with no issues. Jammie took the time to pay attention to the details and charged us less than the original installer. The floors look great and we are already planning on using Jammie again for additional projects.

Hired Affordable Remodeling and Handyman to do some odd jobs around my house (replace an old ceiling fan, replace some ceiling tiles in a drop ceiling, change some light bulbs that required a tall ladder, and switch out some electrical outlet/light switch plates throughout my house). He even went above and beyond by going to Home Depot and buying a part that I needed for the drop ceiling without me telling him to do so. Keith was very responsive, and was able to accommodate my tight timeline. Would definitely hire again.

Alin refinished our 25 year old Maple Cabinets with white pre-catalyzed lacquer prior to putting our home on the market. They look fantastic! Our Broker said they look "factory". He is a true craftsman. We had one slight defect develop on one corner of a door after 2 months. Alin came out and redid the door without question. He stands behind his work. I recommend Home Sweet Home.

Mike has done multiple jobs st our pharmacy. We needed a swinging half door installed and the product was much more detailed than I expected with a design that exceeded expectations. I was extremely satisfied with the product to value ratio. The second job involved an outdoor type of drywall product that was peeling from our building. Mike did his homework and selected the best product for the job, then repainted the entire wall. Excellent work, sir. This man does not take shortcuts and puzzles out custom work to create replicas of antique molding.

Zoltan made five pieces of bedroom furniture for me - two night stands, two wardrobes, and a chest. These were intended to compliment an Indian antique headboard. The pieces were made from my drawings and some pictures. The furniture is exactly as I described, the workmanship was outstanding, and I could not be happier! What is more, Zoltan told me exactly when he could do the work, brought me samples of finishes so that we could be sure they would compliment the headboard, and kept me updated throughout the process. The delivery was as careful and thoughtful as the rest of the experience and exactly when he said he would deliver. I knew exactly what I wanted both in size and workmanship, and it just is not available in stores at any price. Thankfully, I found Torteli Custom Woodworks. Now, I have heirloom quality real wood furniture, of my design, made by a true craftsman. I highly recommend this shop.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
