Jontelle was extremely helpful and nice! He tackled our small handyman jobs in less than an hour! He even was honest about one of our other projects with replacing our back door frame and recommended we use someone that specializes in door frames rather than doing it himself, as well as gave us a great recommendation for someone who could help! Will definitely be using him again!

Mr. Al Lopez is an excellent plumber/handyman who is prompt, courteous, professional, and does a great job. Unfortunately, my kitchen faucet was beyond repair, and I wasn't completely surprised as I had attempted repairs myself. However, Mr. Lopez came along with me to purchase a new faucet at Home Depot, and came back with me and removed my old faucet and installed the new faucet in a short period of time during the same visit. After spending almost 2 hours with me, he only charged me a fair nominal charge in addition to his original quote. Mr. Lopez's total charge for ALL of his work (and time!) was still LOWER than other quotes that I received for just faucet repair alone! To say that Al Lopez is a professional who will NOT overcharge you for work is an understatement! Honesty, fairness, and professionalism is not always an easy thing to find these days. I will definitely use Mr. Lopez again, and I highly recommend him and Nationwide Interiors to everyone. Thank you, Mr. Lopez, and thanks to this Thumbtack website as well!! -RA (Atlanta)

Mr. Cox is professional and pleasant to deal with. I called on him to repair a broken leather recliner and although it had serious damage, he persisted until he got it done. I felt that he went above and beyond in his efforts. I also asked him to do a couple other handyman type jobs, which he also did well. On each occasion he arrived promptly and completed the jobs in a timely fashion.

He is the BEST plumber/handyman I have ever seen ! I had a plumbing issue in my master bath that 2-3 plumbers had come taken a look at and said they needed parts or some such and that I would essentially have to buy a new fixture. But Mr Johnson not only fixed the issue saving me a ton of money in buying the fixtures -- he also fixed it in 20 minutes or less! My microwave fan was sounding like a helicopter when turned on and Mr Johnson once again fixed it so I didn't have to get a new built in microwave. He is worth every penny you pay - he does the work super fast and fixes your problems coz he knows his stuff. Price is also very reasonable for the kind of experience he has. TOTALLY WILL HIRE again.

Chris responded to my request almost immediately and was very willing to come at odd times – whatever suited our schedule – both to give the estimate and to complete the job. He was very professional, hard-working, efficient, great to work with, and very reasonably priced. We were so happy with him and his work that we are putting him on speed dial as our go to handyman.

Jim was outstanding today! He arrived 20 minutes early was very professional and punctual. I have been looking for a handyman for a long time and I highly recommend him for anything you may need. I have a lot of other stuff in the future I will be using him for. He hung a very heavy mirror for me that was oddly shaped on a metal studded wall along with hiding TV cables and a cable cover and also installed some shoe drawers I had from the container store from the Elfa installation collection!! A+ work! Great value 1.5 hours he got it all done.

Jeremy is my all around handyman. He is my "Go to guy" I own rentals, and I simply ask him to go fix or repair or install what needs to be done. I know it will be quality work done on time. No stress what so ever. His prices are below what others charge for similar work. I've hired Jeremy for brick work, crown molding, linoleum and engineered flooring, wall repair and painting, wall and base cabinet installations, replacing exterior screen doors and rotted out window sills. If you want one person you can rely on to cover most all your needs, it's Jeremy.

I hired Andy to do some electrical work with hanging a light fixture in my closet where I was not certain the breaker for that closest ceiling had been successfully disconnected from my main circuit breaker for the house. He was very personable and prefessional at diagnosing the issue, and was quite skillful in getting everything installed and tested within only a matter of minutes. While he was at my home he went beyond the service I had hired him for, and helped me with figuring out a plumbing issue I was having as well. I plan to hire him again as soon as I'm ready to upgrade my bathroom faucets! I highly recommend his services!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
