Introduction: I am a college level math tutor, and have been tutoring high school and college material since 2001. I tutored multiple subjects for 5 years at Georgia Gwinnett College. I tutor the following subjects: * Calculus 1 and 2 * Discrete Mathematics * Statistics and Quantitative Analysis * Operations Management (Linear and Integer Programming) * College and High School Algebra * ACT/SAT math test prep * Pre-Calculus Prior to my tutoring career, I performed Operations Research for AT&T/Lucent Technologies for many years that entailed mathematical modeling, algorithm design, and considerable computer programming in multiple languages. I am a published author of my work. I am just getting back to using Thumbtack for leads. I have been totally vaccinated and boosted! Ken Lipske

Hired on Thumbtack

I hired Ken to help me with college-level calculus II homework(integration, series test). He told me on the phone that he knows the material very well and that I didn't even need me to bring my own book. When we met, however, he brought his own book and spent a total of >30 minutes flipping through the pages to help me (and him) understand the problems. He didn't really know what to do about tougher integration questions and told me that those questions are not likely to be on the test because they are so hard.... Well that is why I hired him in the first place!!!! To help me understand the concepts behind these questions, not to show him all the answers before we solve them so that he can squeeze out some explanations. I would not recommend him if you are looking for someone who really understands calculus. I have never left a bad review before but I feel like I need to let others know before they spend >$90 to hear things they already know and feel unhappy with the meeting. Try getting help from a classmate or a professor instead.

It was not clear what the exact material would be. I should have inquired about that, but we did not talk about it ahead of time. This material, which is series and sequences, comes up in Calculus 2 for about a week in the classroom. So, although very important, not much time is generally spent teaching or tutoring the material. The particular problems that we looked at in her homework were very difficult and would take a very long time to consider and then solve. Going backward from the answer was the only way to get a decent amount of things done. My book has many notes and solutions to problems that I worked on in the past. With this material, it is helpful. Pearl thanked me for helping, and did not mention that she was disappointed with the session, or that she did not want to pay the fee. Since I was remiss in not finding out exactly what I would be tutoring ahead of time, coupled with the associated difficulty of that material, I will gladly refund money to her.

Ken is an amazing tutor. We had 7 sessions together. Before I found Ken, I made a 49 on my first calculus test and a 41 on the next. After I failed my first two test I knew I had to get a tutor then, and thats when I signed up for thumbtack and found Ken. He was always so kind and patient in helping me understand the subject. He would always highlight the things I didn't understand and even made my notes for me to look back on. From just after a few sessions with him my test scores went up tremendously, from 40's to mid 70's. Every test I always improved after having him as my tutor. Out of the 4 test all semester in my class I ended up passing the class. Ken actually cares about the people he tutors; he always wanted me to text him after my test to let him know how I did. If I ever need a tutor in any kind of math again I am definitely coming back to see him!
