Carlos showed up on time to install an electrical receptacle and cable outlet above our fireplace. His helper Jose did a fantastic job repairing the drywall and matching our paint in the living room after the installation. Carlos also mounted our TV bracket and installed the TV above our fireplace. He was extremely professional and courteous. We experienced an electrical issue after the installation and Carlos was more than willing and came back out the very next day to replace a bad existing receptacle that was causing the issue. I would definitely recommend him as well as contact him for later projects as well.

I gave Doug and his crew the impossible job of repainting my entire 1600 square foot condo, repairing many, many drywall issues, taking down wallpaper and covering dark and metallic paint. Not only was his estimate the lowest, he got it done in 5 days! The condo looks perfect!!! This is the only company that I will ever use. Not only are they fast and professional, Doug is a genuinely nice guy!

Franklin was outstanding. Our timeline changed a few times due to scheduling other contractors, inspections, etc. and Franklin was flexible / eager to work with us whenever we needed him to get started. Franklin was very professional - prompt, and communicated well with us. We were renovating a fixer upper - and he did tons of drywall repair, installed new drywall in unique places (odd shaped closets, the gables of a vaulted ceiling, etc.), wrapped doorways, etc. His work (and Phillips') was top notch, as was our experience working with him. We would hire him again in a heartbeat, and plan to when we do phase two of our renovations!

The response time with Turbo Clean USA is wonderful. They were able to pick up debris from a construction project in less than 24 hours! To top that off, everything was cleaned to the point that you would never suspect broke drywall was on the floor. I would absolutely hire them again for future debris removal!

Danny of East Ga. Home Services was timely, efficient, and very professional. I felt very confident that I was dealing with a person who knew how to handle my projects of from tire repair to putting up a hand rail. I especially liked his independent work habits so I could manage my personal projects. I plan on having EGHS do other projects for me as soon as I can.

We hired Kevin for drywall and insulation removal, cleaning and replacement where there was a mold problem. He took care of the mold and completely repaired the area. In addition, he did other ceiling repairs/painting plus exterior home pressure washing. We were very pleased with all results and will gladly hire Kevin Penney again for other home repair projects. He is very knowledgeable, and responsive.

I hired David just this past Spring to do quite a list of repair/paint jobs around our 54 year-old house, which has been destroyed by kids and dogs. He painted ceilings in several rooms due to a once-leaking (now new) roof. He had to work extra hard to get the stains out and really did a fabulous job. He made a sagging ceiling in our den completely disappear after having numerous handymen try to conceal it with tape and spackle. He actually did some tightening of a joist and the completed job was fantastic. When we had the family over for dinner, no one could believe that the sagging ceiling in our den was NO LONGER THERE! He painted a small bathroom, hung a cabinet, mirror and other hardware. The walls were in pretty bad shape, but you wouldn't know it now. He actually saved me from having to buy a new door to the bathroom, by doing some magic repair - the door looks good as new. He was able to order me a new microwave oven that had always just sat in a space in the wall with no molding around it. He bought, cut and stained molding and installed it to make my new microwave a true "built-in." He hung a chandelier, put in a new faucet, installed a closet kit, which I bought at Home Depot (with missing parts that David was able to call and have delivered). His work was top notch - professional, done in a very timely manner. He drew up a detailed, job-by-job invoice and the price was very reasonable. Best of all, he didn't leave a mess and didn't make a mess or track in dirt (I'm really fussy about that). I trusted him, as he was in my neighborhood and he is a good family man. With a truck, with the name of his company, plus business cards. And he always promptly communicated - always answered his cellphone or got right back to me. He has my "seal of approval" for sure.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
