FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $30-$40 per hour for non-legal copyediting. The price will depend on the number of hours required, the extent of corrections needed, and whether the corrections are to be made by hand in red ink or directly to the document, which usually requires re-formatting. Legal copyediting is more specialized, and the hourly rate is $60.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do not attend formal classes, but I practically read The Chicago Manual Of Style cover-to-cover each time a new edition is published. I have an extensive library of books to assist me with any question that may come up when I am copyediting, and if in doubt about a rule, I will always look it up, and provide written documentation of the rule(s) to the author.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I fell into this line of work when I worked as a secretary. People were always asking me to look at their documents to make sure they were grammatically correct. My legal employers began depending on me to review their documents before they were filed or mailed. Several of these employers are now copyediting clients of mine.
