I highly recommend using Francis for help with training your dog. He was knowledgable, patient, and great with my dog. We had 6 classes with him and he got my stubborn dog to do things I never thought she could do!!! I am so happy with the results. I have worked with many dog trainers in the past and he is one of my favorite!!!

Dawn and K have been a pleasure to work with. My rescue was getting destructive and needed obedience training...they suggested their Off Leash program. I was skeptical at first but it has truly worked! The collar is a useful tool used correctly. I typically have it on 1 inside my home and maybe 6 outside. When I tested it, I couldn't feel it until a 17! This is what calmed my skepticism...and the fact it worked on him! He is a different dog. As an owner you have to keep up the training and give your dog the tools to succeed. But their foundation has been a blessing to my family.

Ann Lewis, of Pups to Pooches, is one of the best dog trainers I've ever worked with. She is very knowledgeable about breed temperaments and what motivates individual animals. She is a great person to work with, especially if you have kids and a new dog or puppy because she will work with the entire family and teach kids how to interact with your new pup so there are no conflicts. I can't recommend Pups to Pooches highly enough. I plan to continue doing routine maintenance work to keep my dog challenged.

Jan is a truly gifted trainer. My dog was abused as a puppy and he had difficulty being around anyone but family, refused to go for walks away from home and hated getting out of the car. Jan has helped me introduce positive reinforcement techniques to train my dog to see the world differently and gave me the confidence to work with my dog on several other problems we were having. She uses several techniques, including training the owner to react appropriately to the dog's behavior, obedience training to work on regularly with the dog as well as good tips to build a stronger bond with my dog so we can enjoy each others company and the company of newcomers in a safe manner. Having Jan as my trainer has been a great experience and I highly recommend her! She is devoted to helping my dog and I build a happy and safe home environment. With a persistent, positive outlook that any dog can be trained with a little love and some yummy treats, Jan has changed my dog's life and mine.

Cris is a great trainer. My Weim 80lb puppy (1 year 9 months) spent 3 weeks with Cris, and it returned a changed puppy. Obedient, less anxious, with better manners. Cris was aware that I was very emotional about the whole separation from my puppy, he also knew that I needed help urgently, we were having problems adjusting to living in an apartment, Cris was amazing and he picked up my dog that same weekend, I am so thankful to him. He sent pictures, videos and updates every day. He is very professional, compassionate and caring for both the dogs he's training and the dog's owners. Thank you Cris, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you did for us. Bono is a better dog thanks to you :)

I am most appreciative of Thumbtack getting Kate's profile to me. I have been very pleased to have found someone who is not only a good dog walker, but has so much knowledge about dogs, their training and behavior. I know that when Carly, my little dog, is with Kate I can have complete peace of mind. Since we really have no family except for our dogs and cats, I sure can't say this about too many people!

Our family recently worked with Sonja to help us teach our new rescue dog (1.5 years old) some manners. He is the most friendliest dog but would jump on people, play bite things and people, and was extremely hard to take for walks. We have learned so much with Sonja's help and encouragement. Sonja knows her stuff, she is upfront, reliable and always makes herself available for questions. No doubt that Sonja is one of the Best dog trainers around. The whole experience was worth every single penny. Now when friends come over to our home, we hear comments like, "Oh! Your dog is so well behaved." Even during a dinner party, he stayed in his "place" when told to do so. We are so proud of our rescue's accomplishments. He is the best dog ever and thanks to Sonja, everyone can see that when they come into our home or when we are out for a walk.

Very professional and sent updates on the training with videos every couple of days. It was great to see the progress and the updates let us know that our dog was being well taken care of. They are a little slow to respond to their main phone line, but very quick with emails. That is really the only negative I can think of. Greg is a great trainer and I would recommend him and Off the Leash to all of my friends.

The training at this time is not finished we still have about 1 1/2 weeks to go in a month long program. But my dogs are rescue dogs and one was having real issue with the new environment. They did not refuse to deal with her or say the could not train her but instead said they were going to put in extra effort to help her over come her issues so that she could have a better quality of life. They came out to my house to meet the dogs when they had to change our meet my dogs day. The training area was very nice, clean and inviting. They are sending video updates of the dogs progress. Overall at this time I am very satisfied with the work they are doing and do not expect there will be any issues and feel that when my dogs come back that they will be well trained and be able to go out in public much more confident and happier. I would recommenced them if you are looking to get your dogs trained in a second and in fact have suggested them to someone at work who is getting a new dog and looking into places to get the dog trained. I can't stress enough how good it made me feel for them to say that they were going to keep working with Waffles and get her trained even with her issues and not just say she can't be trained and to come and get her. As she was taken from her previous owners for abuse and neglect. I did not think she was going to have the issues she did because at home with us she seems very well adjusted, but when they came up these people just worked harder to help her, and didn't write her off.

You can tell Chelsea really cares and she goes out of her way to help any way she can. She has a great personality and is very reliable. She was really good with my dog Cesar and helped show me and my kids how to work with him to get the desired results. Cesar is still young and has a lot of puppy tendencies but tends to play to rough with the kids as they would get him hyped up. It was a learning experience for all.

My 5 month old puppy and I both love working with Kris at Family Dog Training! I went to her looking for basic obedience training, but was thrilled to learn that she is also certified in several areas of dog fitness and agility training! She uses her knowledge to add fun, and safe, exercises which incorporate the basic obedience skills we are learning. This is a great way to have fun with your dog or puppy, and create a stronger bond with your pet!!

I've only had my first lesson and I am already seeing significant results. My male German Shepherd was very hard to handle even with a gentle leader. He would bark and lunge aggressively at other dogs and people while on our walks and would continuously bark at neighborhood walkers from my window. They explain everything and are very informative and know what they are doing. I've felt like I've been walking on thin ice because my dog has gotten in trouble with animal control with his aggression. Now I have the confidence to take him on walks and to public places. I don't even use the gentle leader now because the e-collar has him under control. I'm feeling very optimistic and look forward to the rest of my classes.

    About

I left a lucrative career to follow my passion -- working with animals and providing peace of mind to people and their pets. I have been a lifelong pet owner (dogs, cats, birds, fish, chickens, farm animals and more!) and have several years of experience pet sitting and working in animal rescue, fostering and rehoming. I'm studying to be a veterinary technologist. Are you a little nutty, maybe even considered a crazy person because you love your pets so much? That's okay because I feel the same way. I understand your need to feel secure about who visits and cares for your animals and to be updated as much as you wish on how they are doing while in someone else's care. I tailor my services to you and your pet. I am insured and bonded unlike those friends, neighbors and family members we've all been bugging over the years to help with our pets! I will care for any animal and am not afraid of anything; I love them all. Call me to discuss rates and services; you will find my rates to be very affordable. My goal is to make pet sitting accessible to as many people as possible who want to relax knowing their pets are in good hands.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
