I posted the project to stain my fence in the backyard on Thumbtack and got a response from Felipe within the next hour. He arrived the next day as we agreed to give me a quote for the job and by far the best price I have gotten from multiple contractors. He also recommended the stain type I need to be using to last long and helped me in selecting the color. He went a step further and stopped by Home Depot to pick up the stain. He did an amazingly thorough job staining both sides of the fence (even in the hard to get areas and bushes in the wooded area behind the fence). Felipe Barrera is a thorough professional and I would hire him in a heartbeat to do any paint job at my home as well as recommend him to all of my friends and family in town. I would have given him 10 stars if there was a way to do that - Enough said!!!

I needed my office and one wall in my bedroom painted and Doug replied immediately with a fair quote after seeing the photos. He sent over one of his guys to knock the job out who was very cool and laid back. i forget his name, but he was professional, open to fixing any mistakes and unobtrusive while he worked.

Todd, with Residential Drywall & Construction Inc., did a great job on my drywall job from start to finish (applying corner bead, taping, mudding, and sanding). Todd responded quickly when I requested a cost estimate. He asked some specific questions allowing him to quote the job without a delay to visit the job site (an estimate he honored upon seeing the job in person, when he started working). I requested estimates from three contractors for the job (Todd from Residential Drywall, Douglas Gutierrez from DND Handyman Services, and Alex Fernandez from Ale House Painting And More) - Todd's estimate was the lowest cost of all three, plus he had the most 5 star reviews on Thumbtack, so I felt confident that the low cost estimate wasn't a potential sign of low quality work. During the job, Todd's execution met my expectations. He communicated when he would be on-site. While on-site, he worked efficiently. And, as I expected from all of the previous 5 star reviews, there was no problem with the quality of Todd's work. After he finished, I was ready to rock and roll with priming and painting.

I’m really satisfied with the work Aaron did. I needed to push my appointment back a bit, and he was flexible, which I appreciated. The job was done well, efficiently, and he made sure I was satisfied before he left. Great quality at a great price. I’ll definitely be connecting with this contractor again if I need one in the future.

We hired Franklin to install drywall in our kitchen. They were very fast, did quality work and kept a clean job site. We have had many contractors work in our home over the years and Quijada's General Contractor ranks at the very top in our satisfaction.

My backdoor threshold was rotten and needed to be replaced. All other contractors indicated that I would have to order a new door, but Mr. Wilkins said he could replace the damaged wood and reseal it. He quoted a fair price and was able to schedule the job quickly. Due to some of the water damage, my wood floor needed repair as well. I had some extra pieces and he was able to replace the floor too. Work was done in a few hours. I am really happy with the work performed.

First of all Miguel is very kind person to work with. Miguel has done excellent job in repairing my roof. During heavy rain I could see water on my master bed room ceiling. First day he came to get all the details. Depanding on my availablity he scehduled the repair. He is very quick in his replies either via text or phone. He came on time and finished the repair. One good thing about him is he does not over charges like other contractors do. He will give you very optimum quote. He belives in quality work. I had to delay the schedule in 2 hrs and he re-scheduled it without any problem. Talking to him came to know that he has been doing this for last 15 years. You won't see lots of reviews for him unlike others but I would suggest to try him once for your job and you will know what I am saying...Thanks Miguel for all your hard work. Keep up the good work.

Excellent service, work, punctuality, responsiveness, and anything else you would expect from good contractors! I have been pleasantly surprised by the way Leo handled himself, and Rigo, who helped him. I have had many other contractors that did not do so well. No complaints- only compliments for these guys! Scope of work: tile, trim, paint, toilets, and even light drywall repair. Give them a call!

The person who actually worked were a thorough professional. I had my 4-bed townhome re-painted through him. The only disappointment was the clarification about the job work. He did not finish my 2 main doors from the outside since it was (as per him) exterior paint and it's different than the interior paint for which I hired him. I recommend him with caution for clarifying the actual job rather putting in general like I did "all doors and all trims and all walls. But overall he is a good contractor to work with.

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

Louis did an absolutely fantastic job with these ultra heavy mirrors, especially considering the wall he was working with wasn’t the best construction. My new mini dance studio is complete! He even helped me add some extra trim around the sides to even out the look of the wall. I can’t recommend him enough!

The project is not quite complete, but Jeff has been awesome every step of the way, answering all of my many questions and providing me with great advice and tips, from a professional contractor perspective and from a design perspective. He is very responsive, and his team is responsive, too. They are good about explaining changes that have to be made and generally keeping me updated. I could not be more pleased!!!

John was AMAZING! He installed my dishwasher, and later came back to paint my stairwell walls. He was very knowledgeable about the dishwasher installation and was able to install it even after finding out I didn't have the right connection. He saw how badly I needed the walls of my stairwell painted and offered to come back the following week to take care of that as well. And it looks fantastic. Thank you for everything John, you have earned yourself the position of my new trusted handyman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
